You do NOT want driveline components spinning without the engine running. For this reason, many wrecker drivers will either use the dolly or will pull the driveshaft before towing a vehicle where the drive wheels must remain on the ground (or would be on the ground if not using a dolly).

For automatic transmissions, the front pump supplies the transmission with pressurized lubricant. Because automatic transmissions use bushings throughout with pressurized lubrication instead of ball, roller, or needle bearings, there will be no lubricant supplied to rotating assemblies and bearings. Shit seizes up and gets seriously damaged as a result.

For manual transmissions (or at least the traditional manual configurations), splash lubrication is provided by the countershaft. If the engine's not turning, neither is the countershaft, and none of the input/output shaft bearings are getting necessary lubrication unless the transmission is overfilled (a bitch to do unless you tilt the vehicle on its side). Bearings heat up (no oil to lubricate and conduct heat away, more friction, etc.), and the next thing you know, a bearing welds itself to the shaft or its balls and races are destroyed by fretting and false brinelling.

Better to use a rollback for ANY car and just NOT take chances. And this day and time, rollbacks are usually no more expensive than wreckers with slings or wheel lifts (just not as versatile or maneuverable, though I've done crazy things with a rollback). Much easier to load/unload, and many if not most new car manufacturers and dealers will only authorize the use of a rollback.

For 25 miles, you should be able to get it done for between 75 and 100 bux. My opinion, but I haven't professionally towed in about five years.
