as an adult..this shit sucks, how do you cope with it ? I really dont like soy milk at all.
1/21/2009 12:04:49 AM
How does this happen? Is this like "adult-onset" diabetes?
1/21/2009 12:09:34 AM
hey bro i'm having milkshakes for lunch tomorrow, you in?
1/21/2009 12:09:39 AM
milk is nasty, don't worry about it.I eat dry cereal all the time. Just get some lactaid if you want ice cream or cheeseburgers.I'm Big Business and i approved this message.

lactose intolerance isn't all that bad.deal. all you have to do is take lactaid before you eat products with lactose and then you're fine
1/21/2009 12:13:44 AM
yeah modern medical science is a wonderful thing.I'm Big Business and i approved this message.

Yeah, my husband is lactose intolerant and I just keep store brand lactase pills in the refrigerator with the dairy. He loves cheese and such, so keeping the pills in with it ensures that he remembers to take it.
1/21/2009 12:25:17 AM
Yeah I take 2 before a glass of milk or bowl of cereal and I'm golden. It doesn't seem to bother me as much with cheese or ice cream. SWEET!
1/21/2009 12:47:24 AM
Get the pills, or get lactose-free milk.
1/21/2009 5:29:29 AM
Try all of the available soy milks again. (You'll have to go to a few different grocery stores.)There's a lot of difference between different brands, and between different varieties, such as light, plain, or my least favorite, vanilla. (Watch out for some brands that have vanilla in their "plain" variety. I'm not sure why they do that....)Also, everyone should try foods (or beverages, in this case,) a minimum of 10 times before [permanently] concluding that they dislike them. (I'm not sure where I heard this, but it is great advice.)Don't get me wrong -- I'm not anti-dairy. I love yogurt and other sour creams and I especially love cheese. :yum:I wouldn't want to be lactose intolerant, so you have my sympathies.
1/21/2009 6:49:04 AM
guys aren't supposed to drink a lot of soy milk
1/21/2009 7:26:04 AM
While the soy milk is probably better for you (if you compare labels) it certainly doesn't TASTE like milk. Especially that nasty vanilla variety! Try the Lactaid brand. Its as close to the taste of real milk as you'll get without the lactose. I drink it all the time.My mom was lactose intolerant but it didn't hit her until she was in her 20s. Same thing happened to me, although I was lucky enough to have a few more years of lactose-ridden indulgence than she did. While I have the lactaid pills, they don't really seem to work. You just have to figure out what your body can handle. For me, a yogurt isn't a problem. But a milkshake...ugh...tummy ache in the making! I love cheese too much to give it up, so I just eat it in moderation.
1/21/2009 7:46:06 AM
I like rice drinks on my cereal.
1/21/2009 8:11:42 AM
my dad, brother, and i all have occasional/off-and-on lactose intolerance. there doesn't seem to be any particular reason it happens, but i'll be lactose intolerant for a couple of weeks and then it's gone for months. i drink a LOT of milk and i love it. get store brand lactase. lactaid milk is weird and is way too sweet imo. soy milk is shit. i've tried several different ones. if you look at it as something completely different, then it might work out better, but if you're trying to replace real milk with it then
1/21/2009 8:35:14 AM
Happened to me too... the pills don't seem to work anymore - they did at first though. I am fine with yogurt and usually cheese. I can't do milk or ice cream or anything with very heavy cream content. I drink the lactose free milk - it took a little getting used to, it's sweeter than regular milk, but I drink it just fine and use it for cooking. Fortunately most coffee creamers are non-dairy, but I get soy milk in my mochas if I get them from a cafe and I don't notice any difference.
1/21/2009 8:45:17 AM
that sucks manits so weird to read this because i LOVE soy milk. and i can't stand regular milk skim milk is OK if i have to. but even then ughhhhhhhhhhhhhbest of luck though. sounds like lactase pills might be your saving grace
1/21/2009 11:03:00 AM
if i stop eating cheese or drinking milk, i'll show symptoms of being lactose intolerant. some people can jump start things by eating/drinking more dairy products and dealing with the consequences until things get back into line. some people just can't do it anymore.soy sucks - for men anyway. unless you want boobs (well if you ingest massive quantities).
1/21/2009 11:30:01 AM
I've been lactarded for a few years now.
1/21/2009 11:35:18 AM
If you want cheap lactose free milk, order liquid lactase off the internet and put a couple drops in normal milk. In 48 hours it's the same as lactaid milk for tons cheaper, and it's easier to find regular chocolate milk than lactaid chocolate. Soy is bad in general, try almond or rice milk. You can also make your own fairly easy. I have heard oat milk is good and easy to make, but have not tried it.

Soy protein also binds thyroid hormone. Very bad if you do not have a working thyroid (like me) or have one that works but barely. If you drink a cup of soymilk every day and have a bum thyroid you'll definitely feel it. Isolated soy protein is much worse than whole soy for this though. I won't eat TVP, but will have edamame every once in a while.
1/21/2009 1:18:01 PM
Damn, that sucks for you... however, you shouldn't bad-mouth soy for that.("bad in general" ≠ "bad if you do not have a working thyroid")
1/21/2009 1:25:33 PM
For a while I thought that I had become lactose intolerant as an adult. Eventually I realized that I only have an issue if I go a very long time without drinking a glass of milk. If I drink at least one a day, I'm back to normal within a few days.Is it possible that's the case for you?[Edited on January 21, 2009 at 1:59 PM. Reason : .]

i just use lactaid. i've never been able to stomach regular milk, even as a baby my mom had to use sweet acidophilus. i generally avoid ice cream and have to watch how much cheese i eat or else i'm in the crapper with the quickness.

I have been lacotse intolerant since the 10th grade. It was weird how it just sort of happened. Especially since I absolutely love ice cream. That said over the years things have improved greatly in terms of what you can eat that is lactose free. Whole Foods is a great place to shop for these items. They make Soy based cheese, tofutti ice creams (also Soy Delicious; NOT soy dream ) and Silk Brand Soy egg nog is better than the "real" stuff. I also am not a big fan of Soy milk but its pretty good on cereal if you don't want to eat your cereal dry.

I have suffered more the older I've been getting with lactose intolerance. I can eat some things like cheese but I can't drink milk or eat ice cream at all! However, I have found joy in Breyers Lactose Free* ice cream. They sell it at Food Lion.

i swear i thought this thread title was Becoming Lacoste Intolerant
1/22/2009 12:33:04 AM
The OP doesn't 'like soy milk at all.'The best solution here is lactose-free milk (Lactaid brand, or any other brand if you find). It is real milk, and has all the benefits of milk (protein, calcium).^ That thread WAS here 2 days ago. You can find it in Chit Chat now![Edited on January 22, 2009 at 5:56 AM. Reason : ]
