I would like to monitor the usage of the internet. We have a embarq dsl router that does not allow any logging of any kind. I know I can get a netgear router that will email me logs, but is there a safe software solution that will monitor this for me?

pfsense box

yeah... looks good, but it may be over my head.

what you're asking to do isn't really a simple requestyou're going to have to get your hands a little dirty to do anything decent

How about taking issue with an employee directly if they have a work performance issue rather than trying to cause problems passive aggressively?People that do this shit piss me off.
12/16/2008 2:47:13 PM
How about I've already given one verbal and a written warning, but I do believe it is continuing.
12/16/2008 2:52:08 PM
haha pwnt
12/16/2008 2:55:16 PM
next step is terminationno need to set up a monitoring system for just one employee
12/16/2008 2:59:28 PM
there could be a number of reason why he wants to have proof, which this would provide some form of
12/16/2008 3:02:11 PM
i'm 99% sure my company doesn't monitor usage...which is good, because study after study have shown that being assholes about teh intarweb decreases productivityunless, of course, it's something like masturbating to porn at work or something...or the employee simply doesn't DO anything all day (kinda like me and tww )
12/16/2008 3:03:50 PM
well, back to the original topic posed. Does anyone have any experience with any monitoring software?
12/16/2008 3:06:40 PM
I've used a software firewall before called Kerio Winroute...its pretty simple to setup and it logs stuff like that...if we hadn't gone to a hardware firewall we might still be using it]
12/16/2008 3:22:31 PM
this will do it and you can install it on a pchttp://www.untangle.com/
12/16/2008 3:24:55 PM
find 4 port hub (not switch) plug in between dsl router + rest of network. Plug comp into hub, fire up wireshark.

Untangle sounds really good. I may go that route. Any thoughts?
12/16/2008 6:32:05 PM
why not use pfsense
12/16/2008 11:16:01 PM
I've got to have a separate box for pfsense right? I already have a sever in the office that can run the untangle software with no problem. Is there an alternate config for pf?
12/16/2008 11:18:17 PM
just find a p3/p4 on craigslist for $rhode_island and stick pfsense on thereit doesn't need much at all to run, i promisei'm just not a fan of running any sort of server on windows platforms, it's complete overkill for what you're doing
12/16/2008 11:41:10 PM
and maintaining an extra, aging server is a hell of a lot more hassle.
12/17/2008 2:44:02 AM
pfSense ftw. I wish the embedded version could be blown onto some of the ddwrt/tomato routers
12/17/2008 8:36:54 AM
^ my sentiments exactly...if my buffalo could run tomato and pfsense, it would be, by far, the greatest consumer wireless router on the planet
12/17/2008 9:40:30 AM
We use Bluecoat at work.We also have a full system that scans and records all traffic to and from all computers. It backs it up to a NAS box, so I can look up anybodys IM history, web traffic, e-mails, and every other sort of traffic from the last 3 years.
12/17/2008 9:56:10 AM
Cisco 800 with netflow?
12/17/2008 10:12:25 AM
porn at work huh?
12/17/2008 10:16:48 AM
if its one fuckin dude theres no reason to waste a ton of time or money on another device or software. Just grab wireshark and put yourself between him and the internet.
12/17/2008 10:53:40 AM
AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT A BUNCH OF FREAKIN' FASCISTS!11
12/17/2008 11:18:22 AM
12/17/2008 1:28:18 PM
that seems like a colossal waste of money for storage space to log 3 years of IM conversations between sally and betty on where to get their hair done
12/17/2008 1:43:21 PM
12/17/2008 2:17:04 PM
more like ssh tunnels and socks proxies ftw, amirite?
12/17/2008 6:30:41 PM
it does sound like a colossal waste of money unless they use that to do some shit like find cause to fire somebody so they can challenge an unemployment claim
12/17/2008 7:23:17 PM
that's funny.. Our internet monitoring costs us nothing.
12/17/2008 7:35:23 PM
12/17/2008 7:49:33 PM
What field do you work in where you need to monitor everyone's internet usage that extreme? Does McDonalds have internet on those registers, lol. I can only imagine how shitty a job it must be.
12/18/2008 8:43:07 AM
All corporate traffic is monitored heavily, passively. All corporate traffic is not monitored actively by a live person.
12/18/2008 4:54:07 PM
^exactly. bluecoat is mostly automated, just alerts the admin(s) when something triggers, basically. It's used in a lot of industries where farting around on the computer/internet could be a liability or compromise security.
