I just got ripped off by jiffy lube, they charged me 53$ for an oil change (they said cars with more than 75k miles needed a special engine oil that costs 15$ extra) and they said I needed a new air filter and they charged another 21 for that, teh total including tax came to 82$..

The best place is your driveway.
12/6/2008 5:34:31 PM
there are oils geared towards higher mileage cars, but they're no more expensive than regular oil. I'll bet you they didn't even change your air filter either.
12/6/2008 5:35:47 PM
^They are a little more expensive but maybe like .50 or .75 more per quart. Why are you mad at Jiffy Lube? You're the one who said ok to everything. If you don't want to pay for high mileage oil, tell them to put the regular stuff in. If you didn't want to pay 21 for an air filter, why did you tell them to put it in? Do it yourself for maximum savings. No company is going to just do an oil change and not try to upsell you on shit. There's no profit in doing oil changes unless you charge 53 or more.

^^^ agreed...but heaven knows, it's so much easier to just roll up somewhere and have them do it (also, 10 years ago when i had a ford probe, i pulled the bumper off TWICE rolling that damn thing down off the ramps...my stupidity, no doubt, but PITA nonetheless )i usually get my tires rotated at the same time, too, since it's free...and that's harder to do (not impossible, of course), so it's worth it to me to pay someone to change my oil[Edited on December 6, 2008 at 5:41 PM. They did change the air filter.. I was standing right there when they did it.. they offered me 5 bux off on the air filter, but only after I reached home I realised that they forgot to take the 5 bux off.. I went back and they said we'll give u 5 off on ur next oil change
12/6/2008 5:44:37 PM
arent there places where they do it for 25?
12/6/2008 5:45:27 PM
walmart, maybe...but it'll take you 1-2 hours of waiting

^ plus $3 plus tax.bait and switch. it's written right on the bottom in small letters.
12/6/2008 8:15:55 PM
^That's not what bait and switch is...if it is on the coupon and you don't see it, I call that illiteracy.
12/6/2008 8:32:09 PM
dont change just add!
12/6/2008 8:39:10 PM
Total comes out to about 25.38 or something with tax. Not much more than buying it and doing it yourself.
12/6/2008 9:07:09 PM
I dont know, I can buy a good oil and filter for around $15. It is worth much more knowing that I can do it myself and not have some dick screw it up
12/6/2008 10:01:07 PM
I agree with you, i'll always do my own oil (especially since I save 40-50 by doing it myself thanks to needing 15 quarts).. however for a lot of people 10 bucks really isn't that much to pay someone to do it. Doing it yourself you have to worry about cleanup and disposal which can be just as annoying as doing the damn job in the first place. Also you get a free tire rotation which isn't hard to do but damn if it isn't tedious; especially if you don't have access to air tools. There's also the fact that if you do it and mess something up you're SOL... if you pay a garage to do it and they mess something up they pay for it and you're good to go. There are pros and cons to each.

I do full synthetic oil changes, so its a LOT cheaper for me to do it myself.

I would no more let Jiffy Lube change my oil than I would fuck a rabid donkey in its ear.1. Subpar (in my book) filters.2. Pushy techs and managers who bring you your brand new air filter and tell you it's old and needs replacing (yes, I've witnessed this).3. the big bulk tank of mystery oil. Want 5w20 for your Honda or new Ford...it comes from the bulk tank. Want 20w50? Bulk tank. 4. Just whose shitty synthetic are they trying to sell you? Pennzoil? puhfuckinglease.5. High school dropout oil change techs who torque all lug nuts to 150 lb-ft.6. Same high school dropout oil change techs who don't tighten drain plugs or strip the threads and then sneak a bottle of STP in there when you come back with your oil light on and engine clattering.7. Who ever thought up the bright idea of an engine flush? Try THAT on a mid-'90s Camry and see just how much havoc it wreaks after breaking up the sludge.8. You can do an upper intake cleaning yourself with three cans of throttle body cleaner, one can of Sea Foam, and a bottle of Techron in the tank for less than half of what those bozos charge to do it with their 39.95 intake cleaning machine with the $2000 price tag.I'd eat a box of sheetmetal screws and shit 10d nails before I take a car to those cockbags.

i was just putting the price out there as a reminder/recommendation.if jiffylube sold castrol im sure it would be an upsale, and it would cost you another $8 or so to get it. 7 bux is 7 bux to some people though in savings

I used to do my own oil changes when it was easy as hell. Now that doing an oil change requires either coming up from beneath the car (impossible without a lift) or jacking it and taking the fucking wheel off, I'll just stick to the dealer. It only runs me like 30 bucks for an oil change, tire rotation and topping off all the other fluids. Plus they don't dick me around so much with upcharges. They know I come in and get routine maintenance there and that I'm not retarded about what does/doesn't need to be done.no way in hell would I ever take my car to a jiffy lube though.
12/8/2008 2:01:52 AM
your first mistake is you took your car to a jiffy lube.
12/8/2008 5:34:59 AM
lol one time I was lazy and almost went to Jiffy Lube but I found out they wanted like 65$ to put like 5 quarts of synthetic in my Miata, I was like no thanks that's worth an hour of my time on second thought[Edited on December 8, 2008 at 8:16 AM. Reason : t]
12/8/2008 8:16:35 AM
hell even if you take them the oil they try to charge you out the assask me how i know.
12/8/2008 8:20:42 AM
Only time I've been to a Jiffy Lube (in the last 10 years) was when I was living in NYC. I can't exactly do my own oil changes on the side of the street up there. Anyway, I paid around $75 for a full synthetic change, ARGH.
12/8/2008 11:34:01 AM
i went to jiffy lube todayfor an NC State Safety Inspectionstill took em 30 minutes
12/8/2008 7:04:02 PM
^They're real anal about inspections I don't go there. The hot ticket is some inspection shop on Peace St right by the Capital Blvd interchange. Never a wait there.
12/8/2008 7:07:24 PM
At a service shop or dealer I've had:-one transmission drain hole stripped out-one trasmission drain plug fall out (different car)-three stripped skid plate holesI will never take a vehicle somewhere for service if I can do it myself.Doing it myself only saves a couple bucks and disposing of the oil is a pain (cause I'm lazy as hell), but I've had enough shit screwed up that I don't trust any shop.Hell, when I go get an alignment I'm taking off my skid plate before I go just in case it needs to be removed.
12/8/2008 7:34:12 PM
I always use that place at the intersection of Hillsborough & Jones Franklin when I've needed a fluid swap before a trip and didn't have time to do it myself. It's either Meineke or Precision Tune iirc.I can change it myself as quickly as they can write the service up, pull my car in, do the oil change, pull it out of the garage, and get the keys back to me. If there is any wait at all I probably save time by doing it myself. I'd much rather do it in my driveway than deal with service station antics if I can avoid it.
12/9/2008 12:11:28 AM
I have never really had any problems with Jiffy Lube changing my oil or anything. In fact, I got my car back one time and was surprised to see that they even vacuumed it. They also do a good job in topping off my fluids (and i know they charge me for that, but I am usually out of washer fluid or something and check to see that they filled it and they do ) Thats one reason I take my stuff there. Maybe its cause I am a nice person :-) But I searched websites that rated their service and I saw that other people too have had problems.

you also don't have a penisapparently that helps at jiffy lube
