I'm in the process of looking into getting NC State a wolf/wolfdog as a mascot. I'm going to write a bill for it and propose it to the senate by the next meeting (Jan 14th) should i be able to compile the data and write a solid bill.Thoughts on the subject? Using a wolf vs. a dog hybrid? Anything serious? And can anyone verify that this is a complete list of actual "live" college mascots?Live animal mascots in US Colleges1. Bevo the longhorn – Texas University2. Bill the goat – US Navy3. Blue the bobcat – one of Kentucky’s 3 mascots4. Boomer the pony and Sooner the Pony – Oklahoma5. Bullet the horse – Oklahoma State6. This will end badly. I hope I'm there to see it.
12/4/2008 9:49:00 PM
I'm sure you haven't overlooked the fact that we used to have live wolves at football games.
12/4/2008 9:49:14 PM
im still waiting for alabama to have a live elephant roaming the sidelines.
12/4/2008 9:49:47 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_the_tigerThe university would not be able to support a wild & dangerous beast. It would have to be completely up to the Wolfpack club boosters like the Memphis boosters do for "Tom". I doubt our boosters will do much more than give $$ and eat pork barbecue...
12/4/2008 9:50:43 PM
Just one dog? We need a whole pack of wolves for our mascot! We can bury an invisible fence around the away teams side line and let them roam freely during game time.
12/4/2008 9:51:41 PM
I'm thinking it could end well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamaskan_dogcould be used if wolves are considered too dangerous. it looks exactly like a wolf, but is domestic.
12/4/2008 9:53:59 PM
meh
12/4/2008 9:55:51 PM
i would only be for this if you could get a pack (>5) and just because we used to do it, not that we would be ripping off other universities that have live animals
12/4/2008 10:01:39 PM
^^ great, we have a breeder for Tamaskan's in NC....unfortunately they call themselves Tarheel Tamaskan.http://tarheeltamaskan.webs.com/aboutus.htm
12/4/2008 10:03:54 PM
I think we need two. One male and one female. This would be good for the veterinary school in training students to deal with wild animals. We should do like LSU and have two cages made up for them and place them beside the visitor's tunnel.
12/4/2008 10:04:23 PM
it wouldn't be to rip off other universities. it'd help promote school spirit and could be to restart something we did back in the 60s. i don't see why we stopped, and i personally like live animal mascots such as mike the tiger.^^i've already sent them and a breeder in NY an email just incase we can make it happen and go that route.^I think two would be good as well. Packs of grey wolves range anywhere from 2-20, so 2 could work.]
12/4/2008 10:05:02 PM
Forget having a dog represent us, I want live snarling wolves that make the opposing team's players shit themselves when they come out of the tunnel.
12/4/2008 10:06:54 PM
the thing with live wolves is they're harder to train and they're much harder to keep captive. a wolfdog would be a lot more people friendly to the point where your kids would be able to pet it.
12/4/2008 10:08:12 PM
I'm voting for turd sandwich
12/4/2008 10:11:30 PM
so I'm in grad school at Colorado, and I'm telling you, there is nothing like watching Ralphie run into the stadium before the game and before the second half. There's a reason the opposing team NEVER takes the field before Ralphie runs. And that's cool as shit.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrIm3LDjswIthat's the newest ralphie, just introduced at the Spring game this year. She's WAY bigger now, but how awesome is that?
12/4/2008 10:12:32 PM
we'd have to have them in cages for liability reasons....which would suck
12/4/2008 10:13:17 PM
having a couple trained wolf-life dogs run onto the field IMO would be more awesome than our current human mascot entrance.
12/4/2008 10:15:18 PM
i think a few tamaskans is a cool idea.keeping a live wolf in captivity, separated from a pack would be kind of fucked up. i think the dog route could work though
12/4/2008 10:18:50 PM
^i figured there are multiple reasons why a wolf or two would not work, but including it is needed to get something out there
12/4/2008 10:19:47 PM
i like the ideaof the cool ass looking dog[Edited on December 4, 2008 at 10:21 PM. Reason : not real wolves though]
12/4/2008 10:20:49 PM
I'm thinking Tamaskans would be idealFrom Wikipedia:
12/4/2008 10:22:02 PM
as long as you can teach them to maul anything dressed in baby blue
12/4/2008 10:23:18 PM
a few tamaskans would definitely be awesome
12/4/2008 10:25:09 PM
As long as it can do something like this to a Tar Heel football player.
12/4/2008 10:25:23 PM
you could probably teach them to attack some sort of a tarheel representative for spirit purposes, i'm not an expert on training dogs, but my own dog seems excited when he gets to attack non-humans.
12/4/2008 10:26:05 PM
Ok while searching for that pic above of UGA trying to bite the Auburn player I came across this and thought I'd share. Where's that volleyball girls in short shorts appreciation thread at? http://image61.webshots.com/161/8/20/18/2180820180062383056zHAsvG_ph.jpg[Edited on December 4, 2008 at 10:29 PM. 12/4/2008 10:28:59 PM
good job taking the initiative
12/4/2008 10:29:00 PM
If I present a well researched bill to the senate, it will probably pass. Getting alumni and the school behind it shouldn't be to hard. I know people who can probably get me in contact with most of the right people. The costs of keeping a Tamaskan shouldn't be that much of a budget strain, and it could either easily be covered by alumni, the WPC, or if I had to I could potentially start another organization that's sole purpose is to fund and take care of the live mascot.
12/4/2008 10:34:19 PM
With the Vet School and the Brand New Companion animal hospital, there is no reason why a Tamaskan couldn't work....as long as its a Dog not a Wolf, the vet school angle, along with numerous housing options around campus and on the vet school campus make it a doable idea. for a change.
12/4/2008 10:55:01 PM
Three or four of those dogs would be badass. Seriously badass. It'd be cool if we could rig up some dummy mascot from the other team, and have the pack of dogs rip it to shreds before kickoff (think of a bacon-flavored tarheel). Now if we could just get a real cave for them to run out of.
12/4/2008 11:28:39 PM
great, so people could pick on us for having a dog as a mascot......perfect
12/4/2008 11:32:25 PM
hell I'd pony up a little cash to support a pack of wolf(dogs)
12/4/2008 11:32:58 PM
this idea could be easily supported through small donations at FB / BB games. it costs at most $5K per year to support a dog. have either a student group to care for them or a local booster.^as would I, and I'm 300 miles away[Edited on December 4, 2008 at 11:41 PM. Reason : .]
12/4/2008 11:41:16 PM
the biggest part would be for purchasing. Tamaskan's are a rare breed and we'd have to pony up some cash to get some, if we did get one or two or whatever we could probably get it discounted because it'd promote the breed and be taken care of by the best people that could do it, and it'd have access to the finest of medical attention.
12/4/2008 11:48:57 PM
we already have live wolves on campus somewherenot telling where though
12/4/2008 11:52:43 PM
this will end well
12/4/2008 11:54:49 PM
have 4-5 of these guys laying on the sideline (link, cause its too big)http://www.freewebs.com/takaritamaskans/100_1098%202.JPGright here in Salisburyhttp://charlotte.kijiji.com/c-Pets-Dogs-puppies-Tamaskan-Wolfdog-Salisbury-NC-RightPuppyKennel-com-W0QQAdIdZ86729410[Edited on December 5, 2008 at 12:00 AM. ^that one has been discredited by other sites as not being pure Tamaskan. Apparently there are only 3 official ones in the US. One in Elizabeth City, NC. One in Long Island, NY. One in Colorado Springs, CO.And FWIW we could probably breed the pack we get and sell them to help pay for the upkeep. I, for one, would pay for one of these after I get out of college.
12/5/2008 12:04:05 AM
Hell yeah having a live mascot would be awesome! Im all for it!! ESPECIALLY if it gets implemented before next year's football season!! GO pack!!
12/5/2008 12:05:45 AM
I don't like the idea of a dog being the mascot when it's supposed to be a wolf. Yeah, maybe they look a lot alike, but people would just talk shit about it. Although I guess Chief Oceola (sp?) probably isn't a real seminole, and fucking ramses is a ram, not a guy with tar on his heel.
12/5/2008 12:11:06 AM
12/5/2008 12:14:43 AM
yeah i'm not a big fan of getting some wolf look a like either
12/5/2008 12:29:33 AM
12/5/2008 12:38:51 AM
12/5/2008 12:41:26 AM
I think its a great idea. Even if it is a look-a-like wolf, it'll be better than what we have right now (which is nothing)
12/5/2008 1:20:36 AM
I like this idea
12/5/2008 1:34:50 AM
you'd have to get a siberian huskie or something...a dog that looked like a wolf...no way they'd approve a vicious, snarling killereven if it wasnt a real wolf, it would still be less gay than a fucking sheep with blue spraypaint on its horns]
12/5/2008 1:44:50 AM
GREAT ideathat Tamaskan looks GREAT!
12/5/2008 2:55:56 AM
I would fully support the Tamaskan dogs as our mascot(s). That would be awesome...lol from the wiki article
