turn on.so ive got flood lights outside the house. they are on [i think] 2 minute "on" when they turn on. ive also got a 2-camera w/ monitor security system thats been sittin in the garage forever. i want to rig it up so when the flood lights turn on, the cameras pop on and start recording. we've had some junkies comin' around and takin loose change from our cars and neighbors.they come around during the rainy days (we all got hit at different times). im hoping i can have the cameras covered by the roof ledge. my next tactic is sitting outside with SKS, .45, and other goodies. JUST FOR FUN. but i dont wanna be sitting outside every day it rains.

norf ridgekinda shocking i guess.my mom went out one morning and she saw pennies sprawled all over the seat and the ash tray was taken out (we keep change in the ash tray, haha)... same with one of our other cars.we lock our car doors a lot, but i guess she just forgot this time (one car just sits, the other she drives)... i mean, all they took was the silver change and some loose bills.my bro talked to our neighbor across the street today and she said the same thing happened to them a while back... pennies laying all over the ground, silver change gone. and another neighbor i think had his house broken into, or his car.. dont remember( a while back).i dont know.. i mean, who the heck takes silver coins. seems like im missing something (durr like my change, haha).. similar thing happened like 2 years ago during a thunderstorm. my civic powR got the pass. window busted and they stole my CD player (missing a knob)... opened up the glove box... they ignored some silver and gold bracelet and earings.. guess they were in a rush.[Edited on December 3, 2008 at 12:54 AM. I have no ashtray because of this exact reason. Honestly, who wants a jeep ashtray?

go to the gun range, fill about 8 targets with holes in the head and hang them up at various spots around the house!

scarecrows!

does the camera system start recording as soon as it's powered up? if so, that's an easy install. just use a relay to control the power to the cameras. get the power to control the relay after the motion sensor.
12/3/2008 9:23:02 AM
depends on the cameras and the software/hardware as to how easy this will be
12/3/2008 9:51:44 AM
The security camera's that I worked with (and of course I can't remember who makes them and what-not) had a feature that only recorded on motion, It's essentially just a high pass filter on the data coming from the camera and if you use an networked camera you can probably find or make matlab code that will do all this for you.
12/3/2008 10:47:27 AM
pretty much any real web cam software has the option to record on motion. so i'm sure your security system can do the same thing. Buy an infrared camera too...so that you can see with or without the flood light coming on (just in case these crack heads take out your flood light.)
12/3/2008 11:43:07 AM
There is plenty of motion detector software that can be purchased for $35 or less if you have a spare PC and webcam. It'll basically just start recording whenever motion is detected on the web cam. Not the best solution in the world, but certainly one of the less expensive ones if you have some spare hardware. It'll even upload to the web as it records in case they jack your computer during a break-in.

yeah, the box said the cameras are infrared.ill get some pics of the security camera system.it looks old school. i mean, its been in our garage for about a year and at my uncles house for a few years. never been used though.

just put workboots over the ashtray. they will never find the change then

speaking of cameras, and not trying to hijack the thread, what kind of camera can be had cheap that works well in very low light situations and is wireless?
12/4/2008 4:20:05 PM
well i went to costco today and i ran across a setup that is what im doing.its a big halogen flood light with a motion detector under it, and also a little camera that can snap pics, or 10 seconds of video with each trigger.$99then they had 2 wireless security cameras with a wireless receiver. $129 or something like that. range was 45ft.i dont know. ill get pics of what i have to work with soon and yall tell me if my ancient equipment is good to go for what im trying to do

i'm just wanting something cheap to mount on the wall in my daughter's room. i've seen some at tiger direct that has led's but i don't know how much light that would put off. i just think it would be neat to be able to see what she's doing.
