gf's dad wants to sell his atv and this is pretty much exactly what i'm looking for. just something for hunting to get corn in and get dead deer out. don't need 4x4 or anything fancy.the man is meticulous about his stuff. he bought it new and i know it's been properly serviced and taken care of. ridden very little and never abused. i've ridden it when hunting with them and it's in perfect shape. there's hardly a scratch on it. in other words, i feel like it definitely meets "excellent" condition.neither of us really know what it's worth at 9 yrs old and he just told me to look around at what they're going for and make an offer. kbb says $1800 for retail in excellent condition and $1200 trade-in.what should i offer him? also, any opinions on these atvs? i've always been a big yamaha fan (mostly based on their outboards though).

1. shooting deer over corn is right there with running dogs.2. searching eBay and craigslist are the best ways to price things that I know of. book values can be some guidance.3. Ultimately, it's just a matter of what he'll sell it to you for.4. if you don't want it for anything besides hunting, you could get a beater pickup for that price or less. a truck isn't as maneuverable as i'd like in thick woods. i think an atv fits my needs better.i know it's a matter of what he wants to get for it, but he won't just tell me a price. i was just told to make an offer and i don't want him to think i'm trying to screw him over. i have no idea what it's worth.i'll look around ebay and CL. thanks for the help.

$1500 would probably be a good price. It's right in the middle between trade-in and retail price. He might be able to pull $1800 if he put it on Craigslist for $2k and waited for a buyer who wasn't looking for something for nothing, but CL people are annoying as hell. There is definitely some value add in the fact that he could move it now and he doesn't have to deal with strangers coming to look at it.

he's in no hurry to move it

offer $1400, go up to $1600 if he hagglespast that, you can find a better deal yourself

i don't wanna haggle too much and piss him off. kinda walking on eggshells since it's my gf's dad and all. i'm not trying to steal it and he's not trying to rob me. we both just don't know what a fair price on the atv is. it's worth a little more to me just because of the reassurance that it's been properly serviced and hasn't been ragged out by some kid.i think i'll see what he thinks of $1500. couldn't really find anything on ebay or CL. probably because these things have usually been run into the ground after 9 years.anyone have any personal experiences with yamaha atvs they'd like to share?

With how the ATV market is currently, if

^yeah, i understand thatwhat it boils down to is he doesn't use it anymore, i want an atv, and his fits my bill. if i don't buy it, he won't sell it. he's quite content with keeping it and just firing it up every now and then to take his dogs for a run around his land. however, if I want it, he's willing to let me have it at a fair price. he's just trying to help me out. more than likely, anything else i find in my price range will be a POS and he doesn't want me to get stuck with that any more than i do.

When someone says "see what they are going for and make me an offer" they are trying to tell you something without actually saying it.
