I have been working for the past 7-8 years at my families retail store and with the economy there is no longer enough work to stay there. I am in the process of interviewing for a job at Verizon that would be a significant pay cut but there are great benefits and the possibility of advancement in 6 months and tuition reimbursement. My degree is a BS in History and my experience is in retail management so those two dont really help me in my job hunt. I think this job is the right start for me but the money in the short term is gonna hurt. What are others opinions on this matter and has anyone had similar issues?

Its more of a decision I made, sales have all but stopped and its an item that is completely based on extra income which no one has anymore. The business is for sale and even if I were to stay it would not benefit me in the long run, its way past time for me to get a "real" job anyways, shoulda done this years ago and I wouldnt have any problems.

don't worry about what your major wasfor about 85-90% of jobs they just care that you have a degree, not what its specifically in(obviously, there are some jobs that do... but i doubt what you're looking for at verizon is one of these)

hahaha. oh god.yea you can find a job that doesn't have ANYTHING to do with your major. it sounds like you will have a good reference and work experience from your family's store. have you thought about going back to school at all? another option if you really wanted to pursue a job in history.but you should maybe start your hunt with the state? they often have entry level vacancies and the pay is ok, but good benefits and some moderate job stability in a bad economic time. http://www.osp.state.nc.us/jobs/ps. dilemma sorry. couldn't help it!!! Since you have that history degree, you could always look into a lateral entry teaching position. A lot of teachers leave/retire/resign/transfer around the Christmas break, and you might find some openings, especially in rural counties. The money isn't going to be wonderful, but it's a state job with relatively reasonable job security and awesome benefits, and it might buy you some time till something better comes around.

Verizon Wireless or Verizon local?I was an assistant manager at the Sprint PCS store on Glenwood back in 2000-2001. Money was pretty good considering I also got commission, and that's when cell phones were really taking off. Now that everyone has one and all of the carriers are pretty much the same with their pricing, there isn't much money to make in that industry anymore. Most recently I worked as an outside sales rep for 2 CLECs here in Greensboro selling business phone service and internet (T1 based). We competed with Verizon in Durham. The money was definitely better, but with the economy the way it is now no one is buying shit.

Its VZW but in the call center, no sales and salary based, great job security. I decided to take it start in January, with the bonus and benefits pay isnt that bad considering the alternative in this economy.
