NBC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC is changing up the 3 chimes that has been their sound since the start of the network according to Broadcasting & Cable. NBC will have several artists redo the chimes as they re-imagine them and we will hear how they destroy them starting around Thanksgiving? Each artist will interpret the notes in their respective milieu. B.B. King will make give the notes a bluesy twang on his guitar. The B-52s will put a pop spin on them. At the shoot last week, T.I. conceived his own rap about NBC.

how does a rap = 3 chimes?

You're asking how T.I. can do a song with only 3 notes in it? Really?

lol

In the same vein, how will Fred Schneider sing a melody with more than just one note in it?

haha, I'm just having a hard time figuring out how they will use a rap/song/etc. in place of the chimes

i like what they've been doing recently with the tones of the chimes being a different sound from a television show1-Mr. Bennett throwing the ball against the glass wasll in Level 52-Christian Slater's character in that new show getting an earpiece, and the dialtones of the earpiece matching the chime3-there was one with Chuck that I saw but i don't remember the contextand I want to say there is an Office one, but that may be wishful thinking

Last night there was one where Matt Parkman and Hiro Nakamura (Greg Grunberg and Masi Oka) beatbox the chimes. It was amusing.I think there was an Office one with Dwight playing the notes on his recorder.

of course the famous chimes came from when General Electric started the station back in the 60s and they used the notes "G - E - C" as their tone.

* G-E-C are also the initials of the General Electric Company, which owns NBC. There is an urban myth that this was the reason for choosing these three notes. However, GE did not own NBC until 1986, long after the chimes went into use.
