Quote :
"Arizona's Lute Olson is stepping down as the school's men's basketball coach, a source has told ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale.

Associate coach Mike Dunlap will take over the head coaching duties on an interim basis, the source told Vitale.

Arizona spokesperson Tom Duddleston said Thursday morning that Olson hasn't informed the administration that he is resigning. Duddleston said he went to his superiors and was told, "no way," in response to the report.

"We're not making any announcement to that effect," Duddleston said. "At this moment there is nothing going on."

Olson is returning to the Arizona program after taking a year-long leave of absence, which the school said was not taken for health reasons.

An ESPN.com reporter was at Monday's Arizona practice in Tucson and Olson was coaching on the floor and in good spirits.

Calls to Olson and Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood weren't returned Thursday morning.

Olson missed a practice Wednesday and an appearance at a local Rotary club for health-related reasons, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

Assistant coach Reggie Geary, who replaced Olson at the Rotary event, said Olson had laryngitis.

Dunlap, who handled practice on Wednesday, said the 74-year-old Olson wasn't feeling well. "It happens to everybody," Dunlap said, according to the Daily Star.

Livengood agreed, saying in the Daily Star: "He's just sick."

On the day before practice began last week, Olson told the Tucson Citizen that he was "excited to get on the court" and get going.

Olson has a career record of 780-280 at Long Beach State, Iowa and Arizona. He's 589-188 since heading to Arizona for the start of the 1983 season.

Arizona won the 1997 NCAA national title. His 27 NCAA Tournament appearances as a coach are one behind Bob Knight for the all-time record. His streak of 24 straight tournament appearances between 1985-2008 is second all-time to North Carolina's 27 (between 1975 and 2001).

Entering the season, Olson was second behind Mike Krzyzewski of Duke for most wins among active NCAA Division I men's coaches. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

ESPN.com's Andy Katz contributed to this report."

Thank God this didn't happen last year or Brandon Jennings would have committed to Uconn and then jumped ship to Europe and they wouldn't have gotten Kemba Walker...

** That cheating bitch of a younger wife sapped all the will out of ole Lute I guess..

It's disturbing that people speculate about the philandering of a 74-year-old.

That bastard stole Mustafa Shakur from us. Turns out Shakur wasn't all that, though. Definitely no Chris Paul.

A big WTF to Lute Olson. In the last month, he has fired Kevin O'Neil, fired Miles Simon, hired Mike Dunlap, and his other assistant (recruiting) just resigned when Dunlap was hired-he went to Memphis"

Oh, and Brandon Jennings went to Europe to scout muff talent for Lute

Lute Olson will be remembered as one of the best, and most consistent coaches in college basketball history. He helped make Long Beach State successful when they went from being a junior college known as Long Beach City College to a 4 year institution. He left Iowa as the winningest coach in school history.

1 National Championship (1997)
1 Runner-up finish (2001)
5 Final Fours (1980 (w/Iowa), 1988, 1994, 1997, 2001)
4 Pac 10 Tournament Championships (1988, 1989, 1990, 2002)
11 Pac 10 Regular Season Championships (1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005)
1 Big Ten Regular Season Championship (1979)
1 Big West Regular Season Championship (1974)
3 Metro Conference titles (1970, 1971, 1973)
1 California JUCO State Championship (1971)
One of 8 coaches in collegiate history to coach in five or more Final Fours
One of 11 coaches who have taken two different teams to the Final Four

I wonder if this means we'll actually have a shot at beating them next year at the McKale Center. Well if we get Wall and/or Favors then we'll have a pretty good shot anyways.

HAHAHAHAHHAHA....I wouldn't go around admitting that you read the ASU boards. Seriously....not only are they clueless, but they're fucking retarded and if you think I'm kidding then I don't know what to tell you. Even their own prof's know what a joke that school is and anyway....There's no doubt that they would take any and every opportunity to try and make UA look bad considering their track record.

My co-worker's sister is a freshman at ASU. They have some weird policies. First off they organize dorms by major. She changed her major and they wanted her to move to another dorm. She said she wasn't going to move unless someone helped her move all her shit. She hasn't had to move yet. Also they don't allow freshmen to take courses that have class on Friday. Apparently they want to protect them from feeling too burdened in their first year. Hello, this is the real world they are now living in. Man up and make them actually have a normal schedule. Those that are strong and fit for the real world will survive. All that does is give them more of an excuse to party on Thursday night. No wonder ASU is considered one of the top party schools in the nation.

^^a lot of the UC schools have those same policies. The Friday thing has to do with them wanting more time to go back home and getting them off campus for the Thursday night mayhem.

Quote :
"When reached via text message Thursday morning, Scout.com asked if Olson’s retirement would impact his decision, Abdul Gaddy responded, “Yes it does.”

Gaddy, along with Top 100 brethren Solomon Hill and forward Mike Moser may be back in play.

Here’s what we’ve gathered from a source close to the situation. During visits and conversations in recent months, Olson guaranteed the recruiting class that he would be around to coach them.

“Lute Olson personally guaranteed Abdul that he would help him get to the league from Arizona,” a source told Scout.com.

Arizona owns commitments from Gaddy (No. 9), Moser (No. 60) and Hill (No. 64)."

Abdul Gaddy chose UofA over UCLA, here's UCLA's resume for PG's over the past couple of years....

2006 Jordan Farmar 1st rounder, Lakers
2007 Darren Collison, stays in school
2008 Russell Westbrook, drafted 4th by OKC
2008 Collison is a senior, Jrue Holliday is #1 PG recruit in the nation. Both are 1st round locks, Holliday a lottery lock

Gaddy is so young that he'll have to stay two years cause he can't declare after his Freshman year. He's only a verbal commit. If he chooses UCLA, he'd join them after their last 4 PG's were first round picks.

HMMMMMMM, I WONDER WHERE HE'LL GO GEORGE?

Butch Davis to UofA?

what if Calamari jumps from Memphis to go coach at a big school? would UofA's academic standards get in the way?

Lol, I just read that Dunlop told them to fuck off and he didn't want the head coach position. SO they offered it to a different assistant. I guess he didn't want Miles Simon bagging his wife too...

What a circus that joke of a program has become...

"The move to make Pennell interim head coach may be as stunning as Olson suddenly calling it quits. Pennell was most recently an AAU coach in Phoenix and a radio broadcaster for ASU. Before that, Pennell was on Arizona State's staff for eight seasons, but that didn't end well."
