So I am thinking about buying a hot tub, what kind of cost would I expect to have the electrical installed. Right now it is on a 50A 220V breaker. I have a straight shot to the panel through the basement, probably less than 50'. I am going to ask my electrician in the morning but knew that a few people here do this work or are pretty familiar with it.

Biggest expense will be a 50A GFCI breaker, they ain't cheap. Also, by code you are supposed to have a shut off within(i think) 10 feet of the hottub, although I am sure any electrician you would call will tell you these things. I am thinking my parents payed $800 for theirs including parts, but theirs was a much longer run. I may be way off on that though, and it sounds high to me.

shutoff within 10 ft? I thought the breaker had a minimum distance to the pool. I found a nice one for $500 but worried about install cost. I can fix anything on the tub, but only have basic electrical experience. hopefully one of my motor/electric subs can give me a good deal, i'm hoping i can get this done for about $250

even commercial tubs don't have the safety switch within 10ft, it is usually in the equipment room which is often inaccessible to bathers. state law requires a timer at least 15' from the hot tub for commercial applications. i'm surprised that a safety switch is required within 10', although maybe thats just if there is not one on the tub already.

Like i said, I am not an electrician or a certified anything, but this just comes from stuff I have heard all along, and i do have a fair amount of experience in servicing/repair of hottubs, but little to none in installing them. I also know there would not be on my parents hottub if they weren't told it needed to be there.
