Their segment about the responsibilities of the mayor of Wasila was very enlightening. I think McCain probably needs to pick new a VP just on the chance that he wins because if he dies in office the country is totally screwed.

Man, I gotta say this - maybe some people in this forum are too young for this, but we survived Dan Quayle.Dan. Quayle. In the unlikely event McCain does prevail, it seems like we've ridden through this storm before.
10/21/2008 1:35:02 AM
I mean in case McCain dies or something, which is at the very least, of slightly moderate probablility.
10/21/2008 1:46:21 AM
Palin has other issues than just being intellectually deficient.
10/21/2008 1:48:31 AM
All of which disqualify her from becoming the most powerful person in the world.

1) Prior experience in government shouldn't be a factor in deciding who the President will be (in this case the VP). Remember, Obama has just as much experience as she does. I think US Senator and Governor are pretty equal, as well as mayor of a small town and a state senator.2) Palin isn't stupid. She may be crazy as fuck all, but that can be said about a lot of politicians. Her religious beliefs are no more crazy than those espoused by the church Obama attended for 20 years. 3) It's the fucking Daily Show, if you are enlightened by it, you need to seek help. You should be entertained by it.

More importantly, the dealt exclusively with Wasilla rather than Alaska as a whole. It's important to remember that she was also a popular governor of the entire state, if not for very long. And while the governor of Alaska probably has less to worry about than the leaders of other states, it at least presents a unique set of issues.Admittedly Palin jumped through the ranks quickly and there are some questions about her abilities. Still and all, the Daily Show might as well have interviewed people in class at her old high school about how much responsibility they have there. Dick Cheney came from government in a state with even fewer people than Alaska (Wyoming, to be specific), and nobody ever said, "Oh, well, that guy is from a podunk nowhere, he doesn't matter. Although they did say, "That guy is Lucifer incarnate and will eat your soul after he shoots in the face."

haha i loved that segment, quality funny right there

Being a mayor of a small town is definitely not enough experience to be the Vice President of the United States. On the same hand, being a community organizer is definitely not enough experience to be the President of the United States. But who is to judge what is enough experience? Is there a World-of-Warcraft type of leveling system that one must traverse before considered experienced enough?Option 1. Well, I was lawyer, then a community organizer, then a state senator, then a U.S. Senator. As far as executive experience, well, uh, I don't have any. As far as fiscal experience, well, uh, I don't have any. As far as foreign policy experience, well, uh, I opposed the surge of troops in Iraq. And I'm running to be America's next President.Option 2. (sort of) Well, I was a sports reporter, then a mayor of a small town, then the chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, then a governor. As far as executive experience, well, I am a governor. As far as fiscal experience, well, I am a governor. As far as foreign policy experience, well, I don't have any. And I'm running to be America's next Vice President.
10/21/2008 3:19:41 AM
Option 3 (not really) Before running for the office of President, I was a lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, a member of the United States House of Representatives, and an unsuccessful candidate for election to the Senate. I had zero foreign policy experience.

being a small-town Mayor means dick. Local elections are a complete joke in most small towns (i know, i'm from one). It's basically the equivalent of padding your resume by being the treasury secretary for your 7th grade Student Council

You're either trolling or missing the point, TT. They're responding to the idea that we survived Quayle, because this is not the same. If McCain was running right now with Quayle as his VP, we'd be having the same conversation. Having an anti-intellectual idiot as VP to an old as hell president IS a bad idea, regardless of who the president is.[Edited on October 21, 2008 at 1:42 PM. Reason : .]

^ I don't know. As Aubrey de Grey said, McCain better invest in SENS immediately.
10/21/2008 2:09:25 PM
Sometimes I wonder sincerely if McCain didn't think this through in a really elaborate way."OK, time to face fact, I'm older than dirt. If I die in office, the one thing I'd hate most is for some mainstream Republican douche* to fuck everything all up. So how do I avoid that...I know, I'll pick some no-name Barbie doll who can't get out of bed in the morning without a team of political handlers. Then I'll pick all the handlers, creating a team of puppet masters who can channel me through her in the event of my death."[Edited on October 21, 2008 at 2:12 PM. Dan Quayle did some very stupid things as VP and didn't handle himself well with the media. But the guy was an incredibly successful politician at an early age who had a J.D. and a multi-term senate career. The reality is that Palin is in a different and scary realm of unqualified. She doesn't know much about anything; and her executive experience is limited to half a term as governor of Alaska. Now, that sounds impressive -- but for God's sakes, the whole state has fewer people living in it than RTP. RTP! She's compared to W. Bush was the governor of _Texas_, the second most populous state, and he was very successful at it. Having been, you know, re-elected by a wide margin. Palin hasn't even served a full term. Who counts that as executive experience? "Ran a small company, didn't stick around to see what happened." Would you hire that person for a bigger and more important job?Everyone needs their big break and I have no doubt Palin can grow as a politician. I reserve judgment on whether she is intellectual or not. She has a bright future in the Republican party (what's left of it).But for the purpose of this election, it's just plain lunacy to even begin to indulge the illusion that she has anything close to what it takes for this job.(note that I am NOT comparing her to Obama, her experience should be compared to the DOZENS of other qualified Republicans McCain had to choose from)
10/21/2008 2:33:11 PM
she still has infinitely more executive experience than obama (even though you flat out said you're not comparing her to obama)]
10/21/2008 2:42:43 PM
You'll forgive me for not having seen and memorized every episode of the Colbert Report, but in a thread that doesn't mention that show, de Grey, SENS, or any futurism at all, it still seems out of place that you toss it out there (especially without in any way linking it to Colbert, which would at least make some sense.)But I've decided that my policy from now on is going to be to limit my discussion of your one-note, nothing-but-futurism rambling to two posts per thread: once pointing out that you're doing it, and once responding to whatever half-ass rationalization you give. This way I get to have my fun without derailing threads completely.[Edited on October 21, 2008 at 3:13 PM. Reason : ]

^^ I like how you conveniently ignore that fact that I was responding directly to an earlier post. This may come as shock, but folks don't always address the thread's initial topic. The discussion progresses.[Edited on October 21, 2008 at 3:22 PM. Reason : ^^]

Smoker4 - I noted in a previous thread that I thought Palin is done - toast, finished - after she loses this election. You said there that you thought she had a bright future. Then I read this post from today and after the first 3 paragraphs, I thought you had a major change of heart and agreed that Palin will go nowhere. But then I came to:

Don't agree with me on any topic unless you can form an argument that doesn't seem like it came out of the mouth of a baked-out-of-his-mind whigger trying to talk realpolitik to a hot grad student.
10/21/2008 5:01:04 PM
Do you honestly think TSB is the place to have real political debate? It's devolved into a finger-pointing war because the right side won't admit mistakes have been made and the left has been out of power for so long that they haven't been able to make mistakes. Plus, it's over the internet and most of the time it's a flame war anyway. I've shown I have a capacity for rational debate, but people came into my thread which started off mostly seriously and started shitting all over it so I'm gonna fling some shit back at them.
