Installed a new gaspack back during the summer, A/C works fine, at the time I never bothered checking the burners. Nothing about the house changed from the old gaspack, literally unplugged one and plugged a new one in.When the thermostat calls for heat, the draft blower comes on, and I can hear the igniter firing a few times. After 20 seconds or so it gives up and throws an external lockout code(1 flash). I've tried this a couple dozen times now. I did turn the internal gas control valve switch ON. During those 20 seconds I can smell gas, so it's getting spark and fuel. All the ones I've dealt with in the past lit after a couple tries.

What about the thermocouple? If the unit doesn't detect heat within a certain timespan, it shuts down and turns off the gas. A bad thermocouple will definitely result in this kind of thing.

but he says he smells gas. a faulty thermocouple would prevent any gas, correct?

Ah-ha. The metal igniter leads were spaced too far apart. I regapped those suckers with some pliers and all is toasty again.
