Have any of you guys pre-ordered for the G1? How is it that AT&T has supposedly great 3G service here in Raleigh, but based off T Mobiles site it is non-existent. I thought that carried over among providers....Anyone have T Mobile and care to speak on the call coverage? My wife has a corporate account with what was suncom before being sold to tmobile and it seems to work well... her internet creeps though and I worry the same will be true with the G1 unless I am using Wi-Fi... anyone else?

TMO has begun rolling out 3G coverage in most metropolitan areas, however Raleigh-Durham is not one of them (yet). Previously there was 3G coverage in the area because TMO sims would camp on Suncom's network. I don't know what happened when TMO officially became a network in this area. From what I understand, G1's will not be available in stores in areas where there is no 3G coverage. Are you a current TMobile customer? If so, all you have to do is preorder the G1 online, 'cause thats the only way you're going to be able to get it. However, if you are, like me, thinking about switching to TMobile for the G1, I think you're probably going to have to wait until the next wave of G1's hit the market (early November) because they are booked as far as preorders go from what I hear.[Edited on October 14, 2008 at 10:48 PM. ^ that makes no sense... right? I called the T Mobile rep and we spoke about why no 3g coverage when other providers offer great 3G. The reason I dont understand what you were saying is because I was planning on using the phone with Wi-Fi, which it is capable of.. and better than 3G. Also, I asked the rep since I dont have a carrier right now if I could just go to the stores on the 22nd and get the G1, to which she replied I could. One thing that puzzles me, when I call the T Mobile #'s for stores in Raleigh/Cary they always seem to go busy - makes me wonder if they are open, or if they are the right #s. Anyone call a local T Mobile store to confirm buying the G1?

http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f21/out-of-3g-area-ordering-769/A lot of conflicting reports... that makes no sense to have your production bumped to 1.5 Million, but only offer it in a very small number of cities on opening day - I REALLY have a hard time believing that.

10/15/2008 10:05:35 AM
^ whats up man, been a long time...Any chance TMO would do the same thing? AT&T 3g looks good on the coverage maps, though I have heard varying opinions.
10/15/2008 11:10:29 AM
nothin much yo, saw that you were all married and living the domestic dream tmobile will NOT build their own network. they will lease the extra bandwidth on at&t, just like everyone else. you buy tmobile, you get at&t reception.

10/15/2008 2:02:54 PM
and so i've been corrected. oh well. it's suncom, and we get it. so tmobile DOES own the network in this area, unless there was a clause that allows at&t use of the towers.[Edited on October 15, 2008 at 2:38 PM. Reason : i forgot about the suncom sale and i was a part of it.]

Anybody gotten one? I've seen reeeally mixed reviews, pretty glad I didn't preorder (although I did really want one).Basically I just want an iPhone with a physical keyboard. An open OS / dev platform would be a huge plus, though.
10/19/2008 2:01:29 PM
Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?
10/20/2008 10:20:44 AM
I plan to go to a store on the 22nd when it is released... Can anyone confirm a phone number for a local store? I used the ones on their site (3 stores) and they are always busy.. I have a hard time believing these #s are correct. Can anyone post a phone number for a local store that works for them?

spooky, any negatives I have read I think will be fixed very easily. The only handicap that cant be fixed with software was complaining about the right hand having to go over the hump... and having to switch between landscape/normal a lot.
10/20/2008 11:21:38 AM
BTW my gf bought a Sidekick in the store in Cary 2 weeks ago and they were the worst, least trained store staff of any kind I've ever seen whatsoever. It took us almost three hours to buy a fucking phone, they charged her more than the advertised price, and it took another week to get the refund handled. They were constantly calling another store to ask them how to do stuff (the only people working were two guys, both of whom couldn't have been working there for more than a week).
10/20/2008 3:05:49 PM
^ good Lord... any idea why the phone numbers are not working? The biggest hang-up for this phone is the network I think.Anyone have an idea of when Raleigh will have 3g via T Mobile?
10/20/2008 4:10:20 PM
^^ ahh, also meant to ask... did she get a 919 area code phone #?
10/20/2008 4:21:43 PM
My wife was able to receive this from her work contacts, doesnt sound pretty:I'm not sure that the Corporate Care line will let you order the G1 device for use in the Raleigh market. Would you mind trying on Wednesday (or Thursday) and reporting back? The G1 device is launching in 3G markets only - Raleigh is scheduled for 3G in mid-09. The G1 would work on the network in Raleigh - the data speeds are not as fast as in the 3G markets. If they don't let your order one . . .we will try to work some magic. :o)
10/20/2008 4:28:44 PM
I got my G1 two days ago. It is pretty nice... The non 3G network is rather slow but I got it for use with wifi... works fine. The applications are still very limited. Games suck and the rest is awful. The interface is more polished than expected - but still needs some work.I charged the battery yesterday at noon 100%.... By 7pm it was dead (full wifi and gps turned on)I wanted an IPhone but I think the future is way cooler for this phone. Not quite there yet tho.Strangely with these complaints: I still love it. And it works much better than expected in this area....
10/23/2008 2:41:43 PM
yeah, I have heard many people say they were really impressed with the speed of EDGE in their areas. How is the quality of youtube for you? I've heard they compress it based on your speed so I imagine most videos look a bit grainy?Mine is coming in the mail tomorrow
10/23/2008 5:19:52 PM
I was thinking about switching to this company as my service provider and I was wondering how it is? I was looking at the plans, and it seems reasonably priced...I'm currently with nextel (OMGSUX) and I know it can't possibly be worse than nextel, but I was wondering if there is anything I should be warned of if I come to TMO...I have also been looking forward to this phone for a while and I really liked the "iphone"-like interface with the physical keyboard...perfect combo in my mind...[Edited on October 23, 2008 at 8:56 PM. I really really want one of these, but I think I'll probably wait til the second gen.plz2give a fucking headphone jack
10/27/2008 6:02:03 AM
no 3g, no purchase, that simple
10/27/2008 11:26:21 AM
^ I am seriously impressed with the speed of EDGE, check out the G1 forums... its way faster than I thought it would be. I am LOVING this phone... it is truly amazing (disclaimer: my first smart phone). T Mobile has been really good to me so far.. did a good bit of traveling this weekend and had good service everywhere but Latta NC... wow, what a shi^ hole of a place.
10/27/2008 11:36:21 AM
Does anyone know if the G1 is going to be CDMA or if Verizon will support it?The Verizon tech I spoke with has no idea when or if Verizon accept it. I can find all sorts of links saying that it will, but those are from 2007.
11/4/2008 11:15:35 AM
mine is on its way
11/4/2008 4:54:07 PM
went and talked to a tmobile guy for a while at a six forks location and asked when tmobile would be getting 3g in the area...he seemed VERY confident for some reason (probably talking out of his ass, but it convinced me) that it would be june 09...not bad, but still a good little wait...
11/4/2008 7:52:04 PM
should be interesting to see how the g1 compares to the htc touch pro...I've really had my eye on these two smart-phones!! I've only seen the g1 in stores though...I need to go to a best buy or something to see a touch pro...sorry for the double
11/5/2008 12:25:48 AM
My friend just got one of these badboys. The actual operating system is definitely its strong suite. It does a lot, is really easy to use, has a keyboard for emails, nice camera, etc. My only complaint is that it looks really boring (imo) but its features more than make up for it. He can scan barcodes with his camera and get instant online prices for an item (down to sweettarts). Pretty sexy. In response to the applications mention earlier, you definitely need to download a couple for the fun, really adds some nice features. Oh yeah, battery life sucks dick. I hear it struggles with nightly charges. ^^^^I dont think verizon is getting this phone, however i think theyre getting the htv touch pro. Its a pretty similar thing, touch outside, slides into a keyboard, relatively large though[Edited on November 5, 2008 at 3:56 AM. Reason : my dicks too big]
11/5/2008 3:53:52 AM
My battery life seems to be fine... I cut on/off GPS and wireless when not in use though. The Market it awesome, there has been a HUGE boom in the apps that are up, and some are really cool. I expect a lot more in the future.EDGE seems really quick... maybe it is the browser but I can load pages really quickly - not so much when in my steel building at work. Then it feels like normal EDGE, ha.jdbyrd, read my previous post... it was from a T Mo VP, they do expect mid-09 for Raleigh 3G.I think the G1 is better than all the other HTC phones SIMPLY because the android software. MS seems to really make HTC phones lag... i did not think they were all that slow until I saw how responsive the G1 is.I just got an OTA update for the G1 today, rumors of another coming out mid November. Any small bugs (which I have none) seem to be something Google is taking seriously and fixing quickly. The camera, indoors it seems like your normal camera phone... but outdoors, I have taken some really crisp shots to my surprise. There are apps in the market for editing photos as well. I do wish the indoor shots could turn out better though - but with a few edits they look just as good.T Mo has pretty good coverage. NO dropped calls yet, data is REALLY fast and cheap, but in large buildings the signal is weak (ie at my work building or lowes in Cary/Maynard Rd).
11/5/2008 11:17:10 AM
O, forgot to add... wal mart is rumored to carry the G1 for those interested at a reduced price (I think around $149'ish vs. T Mo at $179). Some on the G1 forums have posted pics of ads in Wal Mart stores.
11/5/2008 11:18:43 AM
yeah if you are in a 3g area, farting around on the wifi or gps you can watch the battery drain.when i first picked one up over the weekend i was doing thisbut with normal use (on a 3g network.. great coverage where i live), it lasted ~ 2 days, including a 80 minute conference call, and lots of random playing...that's acceptable.takes forever to charge though.. plugged in at 9 dead and at 91% now.apps are sweet, i just wish there was an easy sync app between my lotus calendar and the google calendar.i found one in the lotus sandbox page, but it was buggy.[Edited on November 5, 2008 at 11:36 AM. Reason : and kinda not sold on exposing that to my google account.]
11/5/2008 11:35:30 AM
just got it, figuring it out lol
11/6/2008 7:44:39 PM
random question, ive heard of people playing quake (or a game like it) on the phone, anyone know where to get it from?
11/7/2008 12:00:32 PM
Based on all the reviews I was expecting way less. I finally played with one and was highly impressed. I have a bad impression of HTC based off my Windows Mobile experience. Hopefully they offer it for sprint... If so I'd surely switch over to it. I bet the apps will surpass the Iphone eventually.
11/8/2008 1:07:38 PM
They need a tasking/notepad google app that syncs to the phone. Do they have that yet?
11/8/2008 2:43:45 PM
wow. I mean...WOW.http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/08/epic-android-bug-inteprets-your-typing-as-system-commands/

Basically the G1 is the Sarah Palin of phones. Or maybe Trig.
11/9/2008 2:38:07 PM
^^ that is.... *fucking* awesomei wonder if anyone tried the command\rm -rf *
11/9/2008 11:46:55 PM
i wonder if that's what the patch was for yesterday
11/10/2008 11:10:47 AM
yes, the Update here says the patch fixed ithttp://blogs.zdnet.com/Burnette/?p=680that's the great thing about OSS, though, right? They might let devastating bugs through, but at least they fix them quickly!
11/10/2008 11:15:25 AM
hahaso, is anyone else as retard-fascinated with the compass view on gmaps?
11/10/2008 11:17:41 AM
How's the media player on the G1? Other than the lack of a 3.5mm jack, are there any complaints about using it for an ipod replacement?
11/12/2008 11:31:10 AM
I hate it because, as failboated as this phone is, it still seems like one of the best options out there.
11/13/2008 4:12:25 PM
I'm 3 weeks in and loving it. I use it for mp3s, video, camera is good outdoors (they not have picsay) which is great at tweaking low light photos.
11/13/2008 5:31:45 PM
I'm planning on buying this phone on ebay. I can get it Brand New & Unlocked for $325. I know I should be able to pop-in my ATT SIM card to use it, however I do not have a data plan with AT&T. Is a Data plan required to "activate" the phone with your google sign-in?[Edited on November 17, 2008 at 4:08 PM. Reason : ]

^ I can not speak on that, but the phone came with the wireless off. If it were on I would think you could sync via that....
11/20/2008 12:14:56 PM
you know what kinda bothers mein the gmail client, you're reading an email, and exit out, leaving the email open...next time you get an email, it chimes/vibrates/whatever but it doesn't show up as a notification.for me at least it'll only show up in notifications if i exit the gmail application from the inbox.

I got my unlocked G1 off ebay today.A friend of mine has a T-Mobile SIM so we put it in the phone but when we do the initial startup, it keeps saying it can't communicate with the Google servers, even though the SIM has a data plan. Do you guys with a G1 have a special data plan/provisioning with T-Mobile? Would any of you be willing to meet up and run the initial startup on my phone with your sim card? Please let me know!
11/20/2008 10:43:54 PM
Never mind, got it working. Turns out you can add the AT&T Media Net settings right there even before signing into your Google account...
