I was cruising down 40 West yesterday evening in my Charger, following a new Mustang GT through traffic. We weren't really speeding, mabye 5 mph over tops. After the crossroads exit, he and I both got to the right hand lane.

I am not sure what happened, but one of three things went wrong. There was a puff of smoke that came from under the car.
1. He gunned it
2. He had a blowout
3. He locked up his brakes.

But he lost control of the car. The tail end came out to the left, he over corrected bringing back the tailend back to the right, then he over corrected once again and shot off the road @70 MPH in to the side of the hill. He hit the front end first, sending the car into a 1 1/2 flip/spin. I checked my mirrors and then hit the brakes.

As his car flipped over, I saw what looked to be a the passanger side seat fly out of the window. His trunk opened and shit was everywhere. My first thought was "Shit, this guy is gonna be dead".

I jumped out of the car and made my way through a shit ton of briers to help him out of the car. He was actucally alright, besides a possible collar bone issue. He was one lucky fucker.

Pics are soon to come

It would take a lot of power to break the rear tires loose at above 60mph. The car appears stock, my guess is he downshifted into the wrong gear. Glad he's alive.

umm sounds like he went from 5th gear to 1st gear, locked that baby up, and couldnt get it back straight.

this is EXACTLY why insurance on a mustang is so high!! higher than a 350z, s2k, etc...

you have alot of dumb accidents happening in those cars. not to say that this cant happen in another sports car. Mustangs are real popular with the young crowd and they like to play around in them. A mustang can get away from you real quick. So much low end torque

I don't think it matters at this point, but the guy (Kevin) said it was a Stock Mustang GT...he had just bought it in FL and was driving back to Jersey.

You can downshift from 5th to 1st? I've never owned a cool enough car. All my cars had mechanisms that kept me from doing such.

The commonly executed missed shift is 5th to 2nd when trying to find 4th instead. Other than blocking reverse, I'm not aware of any shifting mechanism that won't let you put it into any gear (save for reverse) in a manual transmission vehicle. If there's too much effort to go into a given gear, I'd wager this is due to the inability of syncrhos to keep up/too much rotating mass, rather than a deliberate safety mechanism.
