Any of you getting bad speeds and ping times during peak hours?

Absolutely. I've got the basic package of 7 Mbps down/384 Kbps up, and I'm lucky if I get 1 Mb down from 5pm until midnight and later. My all-time record speedtest result was 600 Kb/132 Kb.

I called them a couple times, the latest being upgraded to "level 3" where the tech had me run yet another speedtest and saw first-had how bad the connection was. I think his first comment was "Whoa, your ping just went to 1000." He said he'd log a ticket and have the local office/whatever send people out to check on the equipment that serves the area. That was about a week and a half ago, and I haven't seen any difference whatsoever in speed levels. I'll probably call and complain again this weekend.

K, keep calling. I'll do the same. I've had 3 guys come out so far: the first blamed DirecTV, the second actually found a kinked connection in my line and fixed it, the third just now said everything's fine, but he thinks a lot of people in the area are having a similar problem (and if anyone would notice first, it'd be the savvy people).

Also... to the wardriver outside; I've seen you before walking my dog. I know what you're up to. You might want to change your MAC address to something other than 00:1e:c2:25:2d:7f

It's an armed vehicle you can make and automate using a laptop computer and some motorized parts. It seeks out and destroys neighbors whose open wireless networks are either interfering with yours or sucking up all the local bandwidth.

Its just part of cable. its not a point to point connection, the more people that get on it the slower it gets. Think of it as a highway, great when your alone, but can get slow as more people get on.

DSL on the other hand is point to point, its a smaller road but only you drive on it.

depends on how close you are to the trunk lines for which ones faster.

you realize all consumer lines are shared and all networks experience decreased performance with load, right? dsl just gives such a low quality of service standard that they can "guarantee" based on their user base.

Helped me tremendously. Of course, if you're consistently seeing low results in speed tests, that's different.

I'm off avent ferry. Usually get 3-4 mbps and rarely get our max any more. I'm hoping the rumors that Uverse will be coming through here are true. It'd be nice to try a different company for a change.

Omg, I'm on the phone with TWC tech support and I've talked to at least 3 people so far: the basic tech person in the Philippines, the "level 3" tech, and then he mistakenly transferred me over to "dispatch." The people at the dispatch office sounded like they were having a party or something, before the lady I talked to actually realized that I was on the line. I don't know why the hell I'm talking to her, the L3 guy said he was going to call them and then report back to me. It's like a giant train wreck.

And this hold music sucks so bad.

Edit: God, this "dispatch" lady doesn't know what the fuck is going on. "Would you like to upgrade to TWC Turbo?" No, I want my connection to work like it's fucking supposed to! I'm getting speeds 1/10 of what I'm paying for RIGHT NOW as we are speaking. Now she's transferring me back to Level 3 people.

Apparently there are enough modems off in the area around Avent Ferry (~7) that they've declared an outage and are going to send some people out tonight to look at the node. And I also got a full month's credit on my account.

Final phone time: 1h30m.

Wow, god damn, I thought it was just me getting a horrid random ping. I was thinking all along "this house is old, the wires are old, the cable guy is going to tell me that"

Yes my speed greatly varies during 5-10pm.

^^you really need all that bandwidth to play tf2? Shoulda stayed at our place.

Gorman/Marcom:

Ping used to be a constant 85 last semester, now it's always 69.

Yeah, I was getting 1134 kb/s down and 130 kb/s up when I was on the phone with the dispatch lady when she said, "You wanna upgrade?"

So I had scheduled my fourth tech to come out Sunday night; and I had him scheduled for 5-7pm Monday (yesterday), so he could see peak time traffic.

I get a phone call Monday from a guy, and says there have been a lot of people in the area with problems, and admits they probably just need to up the bandwidth. Took four guys to admit that He gave me his office # and cell # in case he's out on a call, and says to call him directly if it hasn't improved by Sunday.

I live on the eastern side of Cary and I've been having problems also. Not disconnects, but just complete losses in receiving data. It takes a few restarts of all my equipment and waiting around for awhile to get everything working again. It's been going on like this for a few weeks.

Could you guys on Gorman with a cable connection could go

to http://www.speedtest.net/, and post your average download and upload speeds between 5-10PM?

It's just curiosity mainly how most of you compare to the average Road Runner connection speed on the site.

^so I guess we just have a better connection on gorman than everyone else. Only reason speedtest has ever dropped is if a roommate was using the bandwidth on the LAN. 5-10pm is no different than other times. Although from
5-10 it stays at 15-20mbit for less time before going back down to it's 10mbit average. Wish I could utilize the 15-20mbit boost speeds all the time.

The TWC speedtest on their site wouldn't even load for me last night, it kept timing out, lol. Right now I'm getting 6.2 mbps down, which I think is the best it's ever been for this time of day. Guess I'll play some TF2 while it's good.

You really don't need a fast connection to play online games. 1mbit should be plenty as long as your ping is good. And don't even think about hosting games with TW.

But my ping is horrible (250+, usually).

Speedtest.net = 1428 kbps
TWC test = network timeout
Speakeasy.net = 1633 kbps

=/= 7 mbps

^Yeah that's not good. Somethings wrong. Ping should never be higher than 100. You sure you've eliminated any LAN issues?

I tried the TWC speed test and it times out for me too.

But with speedtest.net:

I just finished talking to Jeff over at TWC online customer service.

He told me that my high speed cable has a subscribed speed of 7138kbps/340kbps.

That's the same thing neodata has, so I suspect that all the problems lie with people who have sub-turbo plans.

Turbo is pretty good, but I'd still like a better upload speed. And another thing, I just got a notice in my bill this month that they're going up $3/mo starting in November.

Just had a TWC guy come out to my apartment, and he replaced everything "from the wall connection to the tap" whatever that is. Hopefully it was all just faulty wiring that he replaced, because my speeds are the highest they've ever been, closest to what I'm paying for. Now I've gotta hope they stay high-ish through the evening.

I was a satisfied TWC/Earthlink customer until this summer. Starting in June, my modem would lose connection randomly for up to 30 minutes at a time. After being told that they couldn't do anything to fix the problem, I reluctantly made the leap to AT&T DSL (no phone line). Haven't looked back. Equal service for about the same amount of money.

right, synapse, it's oversold bandwidth. the poor bandwidth is a sign that it's time to increase infrastructure to handle the load.

personally, i've downgraded my service from standard RR to RR Lite, which is only 768 kbit down for only $20/month. but in my situation, it's no worse than before.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I thought that if I'm paying for 7mbps, then maybe I should get that, or close to that. I can understand a slower speed because of traffic and that shit, but 500kbps? C'mon.
