This applies to mostly everyone, everywhere, in this country....When dealing with any the 2 parties, if you're debating with the other....If you're a Democrat you support and defend democrats no matter what..... If you're a Republican you support and defend republicans no matter what.

Election time is when admitting to a difference of opinion with someone in your own party or pointing out a factual error that someone in your own party makes is considered a sign that you are conceding that your party as well as all the opinions on the issues of your party, are wrong.

It's like people put blinders on and look straight ahead instead of actually talking about anything.

I also find it interesting that until last night, I was under the assumption, based on what I've heard since forever, that gay marriage views are shared by both parties. I've heard from more than one of my gay friends that they would never vote for the Reps because they don't support gay marriage.....which is true.....but neither do the Dems...

the gay marriage debate kind of came down to semantics

also it was clear that neither of them were comfortable talking about it, and they both were obviously relieved when the moderator said lets move on to whatever the next topic was

So in conclusion: It doesn't actually matter what either side actually believes because in the end, almost everyone is going to vote for their own party. It comes down to who there are more of....Republicans or Democrats. How sad for this country.

There are more issues that concern the LGBT community than marriage alone. In the primary season Obama was the first agree to attend the LGBT forum and helped make it happen on the Democratic side & most of the other democrats came along too (some were very vocal in their support for marriage equality), whereas all of the Republicans including McCain refused to attend.

Presidential politics is high stakes and marriage equality gets throw in the middle as a wedge issue all too often. While I don't condone Obama-Biden tickets more moderate view, I understand it, and I know where my allies are.

Well to be honest with you, I think it's a bad thing when you vote for someone based on what the party traditionally supports. I mean if that were the case then why bother having candidates at all?

This country is going to continue to decline until there is a politician that can seriously "step across the aisle" and transcend party politics, and do something to actually unite the country.

Easier said than done I know, but it's definitely not this election as much as both candidates like to say it.

Kelsey Grammar said in an interview today the country is in a Civil War just not with fighting, and it's going to continue to tear the country apart because neither side wants to back down. And if Frasier Crane says it, it's good enough for me, he is a doctor you know.

Quote :
"Fannie Mae forgives loan for woman who shot herself

(CNN) -- Fannie Mae said it will set aside the loan of a woman who shot herself as sheriff's deputies tried to evict her from her foreclosed home.

Fannie Mae foreclosed on the Akron, Ohio, home of Addie Polk, 90, after acquiring the mortgage in 2007.

Fannie Mae foreclosed on the Akron, Ohio, home of Addie Polk, 90, after acquiring the mortgage in 2007.

Addie Polk, 90, of Akron, Ohio, became a symbol of the nation's home mortgage crisis when she was hospitalized after shooting herself at least twice in the upper body Wednesday afternoon.

On Friday, Fannie Mae spokesman Brian Faith said the mortgage association had decided to halt action against Polk and sign the property "outright" to her.

"We're going to forgive whatever outstanding balance she had on the loan and give her the house," Faith said. "Given the circumstances, we think it's appropriate."

Residents of Akron have rallied behind Polk, who is being treated at Akron General Medical Center. She was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon, according to Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, mentioned Polk on the House floor Friday during debate over the latest economic rescue proposal.

"This bill does nothing for the Addie Polks of the world," Kucinich said after telling her story. "This bill fails to address the fact that millions of homeowners are facing foreclosure, are facing the loss of their home. This bill will take care of Wall Street, and the market may go up for a few days, but democracy is going downhill."

Neighbor Robert Dillon, 62, used a ladder to enter a second-story bathroom window of Polk's home after he and the deputies heard loud noises inside, Dillon said.

"I was calling her name as I went in, and she wasn't responding," he said.

He found her lying on a bed, and he could see she was breathing. He also noticed a long-barreled handgun on the bed, but thought she just had it there for protection. He touched her on the shoulder.

"Then she kind of moved toward me a little and I saw that blood, and I said, 'Oh, no. Miss Polk musta done shot herself,' " Dillon said.

He hurried downstairs and let the deputies in. He said they told him they found Polk's car keys, pocketbook and life insurance policy laid out neatly where they could be found, suggesting that she intended to kill herself.

"There's a lot of people like Miss Polk right now. That's the sad thing about it," said Sommerville, who had met Polk before and rushed to the scene when contacted by police. "They might not be as old as her, some could be as old as her. This is just a major problem." Video Watch Polk's neighbor describe what he saw ยป

In 2004, Polk took out a 30-year, 6.375 percent mortgage for $45,620 with a Countrywide Home Loan office in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The same day, she also took out an $11,380 line of credit.

Over the next couple of years, Polk missed payments on the 101-year-old home that she and her late husband purchased in 1970. In 2007, Fannie Mae assumed the mortgage and later filed for foreclosure.

Deputies had tried to serve Polk's eviction notice more than 30 times before Wednesday's incident, Sommerville said. She never came to the door, but the notes the deputies left would always disappear, so they knew she was inside and ambulatory, he said.

The city is creating programs to help people keep their homes, Sommerville said. "But what do you do when there's just so many people out there and the economy is in the shape that it's in?"

Many businesses and individuals have called since Wednesday offering to help Polk, Sommerville said.

"We're going to do an evaluation to see what's best for her," he said. "If she's strong enough and can go home, I think we should work with her to where she goes back home. If not, we need to find another place for her to live where she won't have to worry about this ever again."

For his part, Dillon hopes his neighbor of 38 years can return to her home.

"She loves that house," he said. "I hope they can get her back in. That would make me feel better because I don't know what they're going to put in there once she leaves."

He said the neighborhood is declining because so many people have lost their homes.

"There's a lot of vacant houses around here. ... Now I'm going to have a house on my left and a house on my right, vacant," he said. "That don't make me feel good, because we were good neighbors, we trusted each other, and we looked out for each other.

"This neighborhood is shot, to me, from what it used to be," he added.

"When I moved here, if it were like it is now, I would have never moved here. But it was a nice neighborhood. ...

"I'll just tough it out. I'm too old to start thinking about buying another house."

Sommerville said that by the time people call for help with an impending foreclosure, it's usually too late.

"I'm glad it's not too late for Miss Polk, because she could have taken her life," Sommerville said. "Miss Polk will probably end up on her feet. But I'm not sure if anybody else will." "

This is what I thought you meant when you made this thread.

So some lady decides she'd rather be dead than evicted. Her attempt at death fails, but she succeeds in manipulating the system and wins. So what message does this send to everyone else?

I feel bad for the woman, but do not feel like giving her a free house.

Maybe they could have floated her rate down or something so she was still paying or something and let her stay there? I mean Fannie Mae is not really in a position to be forgiving loans entirely right now.

I think the original poster had a great point and it's why people hate politics. To quote Gov. Palin:

Quote :
"Now, you said regarding Senator McCain's military policies there, Senator Biden, that you supported a lot of these things. In fact, you said in fact that you wanted to run, you'd be honored to run with him on the ticket. That's an indication I think of some of the support that you had at least until you became the VP pick here.

You also said that Barack Obama was not ready to be commander in chief. "

A few months ago, the Presidency was "no place for on the job training." Democrats are praising John McCain for his independence. Now it's a month before the election, McCain is wrong about everything and Obama is going to save the world.

On the flip side, half of the Republicans hated McCain before he secured the nomination. Now the "maverick" label is being used as a compliment, when a few months ago he was a pain in the ass.

Someone wise once told me that there's a difference between being trustworthy and being honest. Politicians in America grasp that distinction exquisitely, I'm afraid.

imo if she really wanted to kill herself, she would have been dead when they arrived

Quote :

pathetic editing... that quote is totally inappropriate in the context of the story

and back to the original topic

during the debate they both said they were against gay marriage but i believe its more important for rights to be in place for gay couples. this is in reference to wills, life insurance payments, etc.

Who are you fucking kidding? You said you wished she died, and since she didn't that it's good she's too old to breed. We're talking about a 90 year old woman who shot herself. Nobody here thinks she should get out of her obligations because of it, but Jesus -- you wish she died??

I don't agree with her obligations being broken but if it came down to that or her dying, fuck the other stuff -- it's just money.

Quote :

It's weird she took out a line of credit? An old person with liquidity issues is confusing to you? How many old people do you know?

There's no way the house in that article is only worth 45K -- obviously she pulled some equity out of the home at some point in time.

I don't think anybody reasonable wants to use government to force Churches to marry people. In fact, everything should be a "civil union" in this country -- fuck the term "marriage."

Quote :
"Police: Porter Ranch Gunman's Letters Cite 'Financial Problems'

LOS ANGELES -- Police said a man apparently despondent about financial problems shot and killed his wife, three sons and mother-in-law, then turned the gun on himself, in the family's rented home in a gated community in the Porter Ranch area.

The bodies were discovered about 7:15 a.m. Monday at 20644 Como Lane. Officers were asked to conduct a welfare check by a friend of the 39-year-old mother when she did not stop by the neighbor's home Monday morning as she usually does before leaving for work.

Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Michel Moore, who spoke to reporters at midday outside the home in the upscale Sorrento section of Porter Ranch, called it "a very tragic scene ... absolute devastation inside this home."

"Inside the home, officers discovered six bodies, all belonging to the family that lived at this location ... We believe this to be a murder- suicide," he said.

He said investigators believe the 45-year-old father killed his wife, 19- , 12- and 7-year-old sons and his 70-year-old mother-in-law, then turned the weapon on himself, sometime after 6 p.m. Saturday.

The father was identified Monday evening as Karthik Rajaram.

The bodies were found in various bedrooms of the home, and a handgun was recovered where the father was found, Moore said.

"The handgun that was discovered here on scene was recently purchased, only on the 16th of September," by the father, he said.

Three letters were also found inside the residence, Moore said.

"One was addressed to law enforcement. We've opened that letter and ... the contents, while I'll not divulge all of it ... attests to his responsibility for taking of the lives of his family members and then himself," he said.

"There's also a second letter, also a suicide note, and then a third letter or an envelope that we believe was meant to represent his last will and testament," Moore said.

"Preliminarily, we know that the suspect ... has been unemployed for the past several months," he said. "In the past, we understand he's worked for major accounting firms such as PriceWaterhouse(Coopers) and perhaps Sony Pictures. It appears that he had an MBA in finance."

Moore said he could not provide the specifics of the note, "other than he attests to some financial difficulties and he takes responsibility for the taking of the lives of his family members and himself as a result of those financial difficulties."

He said the man appeared to have no prior contact with mental health professionals within Los Angeles County.

"We believe that he has become despondent recently over financial dealings and the financial situation of his household, and that this murder- suicide event is a direct result of that," Moore said.

Moore said initial notification of next-of-kin had been made, but investigators were working with the coroner's office to confirm the identities.

Moore said the home was "very neat" and the victims were found throughout the house, though not all of them were in bed.

He said it was too early to say how many shots were fired or "whether these individuals were asleep at the time or if there were any efforts for them to escape this attack."

The LAPD was working with the Los Angeles Unified School District to arrange for crisis response teams to be dispatched to the two local schools that the 7- and 12-year-old victims attended, Moore said.

A crisis response team from the mayor's office also responded to assist the family's friends and neighbors.

Superintendent David Brewer issued a statement saying the "entire Los Angeles Unified School District family is saddened to hear" about the deaths and would " provide support and assistance to the school staff and students following this unfortunate tragedy as long as needed.""

The tide approaches...
