I tried to install limewire, got halfway through the setup, stalled on me so i closed it out. When I tried to run the install again it said that I had to close another synaptic package before continuing blah blah blah. and when i try to open the synaptics package manager i get this message:

This is just Ubuntu trying to prevent you from making a huge mistake.

anyone using XUbuntu? If so how do you like it? I just downloaded the install disc but I'm hesitant to reinstall everything on my work laptop and have to re-setup my local dev environment unless its totally worth it.

^^hahahahwhy would you install limewire to steal software on an opensource OS? that's the most illogical thing ever^ I use Ubuntu with gnome and compiz fusion on my ubuntu bawkxs[Edited on September 28, 2008 at 10:06 PM. Reason : .]

The only time you'll notice a performance difference with Xubuntu is when you are using very old hardware that cannot handle a modern OS.It really makes for a nice refresh on old hardware that uses Windows 95/98/ME/2000. I'd argue from experience that older computers run faster with Xubuntu than with those versions of Windows. That said, on new hardware, just stick with Ubuntu or Kubuntu and get the benefits of a modern OS.

You don't need limewire - just use the gnutella client that you can install with Synaptic.

i have been using ubuntu for the past few months and it has been crashing like a mofo. and i'm not even running limewire!
9/29/2008 10:29:23 PM
I've been running 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) for a while now on a 256MB/1.80GHz machine with no problems, never had it crash. I still can't get Firefox to play nicely with Flash, though.
9/29/2008 10:45:43 PM
i am using 8.04. yeah every site with flash on it sucks because it always layers over the rest of the page. dell's website is a good example of "wtf". i don't know why stuff started crashing because it was rock solid for a while, but now if i leave it up for more than a day or so everything starts being unresponsive and i have to reboot. and the sound goes out. very frustrating.

people still use limewire?

^^^ I'd bet money pulseaudio is the culprit of that. killall pulseaudio and i bet everything runs solid for you again. close pidgin before doing that otherwise it crashesI don't even think the bug is with pulseaudio I think it is other programs that end up causing pulseaudio to crash.and as far as just music goes use torrents or if you just want single songs http://www.seeqpod.com/iphone/

connecting to my windows network has been hit or miss with ubuntu. Sometimes I can connect and other times it doesnt even see the network.

Wireless? It took a month or so and two wireless adapters before I got a steady connection.

i never had a problem with wireless connections or seeing the windows network. those two things actually worked flawlessly and better than in windows.
