ahaha, my friend and I were checking out what movies were being released this week and we watched the trailer for this awful film. Everyone needs to watch the trailer to this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5lSu6GkC2k
9/26/2008 7:16:13 PM
I admit that this is not the type of movie I would normally go to see, but the knee-jerk and apparently anti-Christian positions here are telling. FTR, the filmmakers responsible for, the investors in, and the audiences watching Fireproof have had the last laugh: 'Fireproof' Shows Christian Movies Sell Film Starring Kirk Cameron Opened at No. 4 With $6.8M in Ticket Sales
10/6/2008 6:06:26 PM
so what? it's still a terrible movie
10/6/2008 6:30:02 PM
Didn't we learn than Christian movies sell with Passion Of The Christ?
10/6/2008 6:34:21 PM
^^ Um. . .a "terrible" movie? One that has earned nearly 25 times its production budget in about ten days?If I'm a studio exec, I'll make so-called terrible movies of this type on a continual basis. And the shareholders will thank me for it.
10/6/2008 6:49:22 PM
studio execs, do, in fact, churn out awful movies if they know it'll make a buck.cf. Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Date Movie, Disaster Movie, Superhero Movie
10/6/2008 6:59:19 PM
Ah, hooksaw. The man who hates soul music and equates merit with profit.Preachers all over America told their congregations that God wanted them to see this movie.
10/6/2008 7:01:11 PM
10/6/2008 7:13:42 PM
this movie has "straight to abc family" written all over it. how the hell is it any different from those crappy made for tv movies
10/6/2008 7:15:38 PM
The movie made 12 million dollars...
10/6/2008 7:41:56 PM
^^ It was made by evangelical Christians. Therefore, churches will buy out entire cinemas to watch it.
10/6/2008 7:56:47 PM
10/6/2008 9:37:26 PM
he's not exactly a professional critic, you know, who has studied film. not to mention the chik-fil-a product placement in this movie.
10/6/2008 9:49:00 PM
also maybe because the upper-management of Chick-fil-a are obviously overtly Christian ("Closed on Sundays", anyone?) and are probably willing to put aside objectivity as long as the guy with the Bible comes out on top in the end
10/6/2008 9:52:58 PM
^ Only those who worship in the science lab can be objective, am I right?
10/6/2008 10:49:59 PM
looking at the trailer for this movie, it's not apparent that this is some kind of evangelical's wet-dream. It looks like any number of other sappy relationship-based movies that come out each year that may have a spiritual undertone. i'm not sure how you can compare this date movie to a mock/documentary.... last I checked, documentaries weren't really expected to go toe-to-toe with studio films.
10/6/2008 11:03:09 PM
I watched Facing the Giants at my church one time. It was made by these same people, and was about football.Certainly not great, and the acting was mediocre. But it wasn't terrible, basically Remember the Titans or Saturday Night Lights with a Christian message.
10/6/2008 11:08:56 PM
Just to combat the "this movie made a profit so it is good" argument...
10/7/2008 4:14:58 AM
uh. hooksaw.you implied that it wasn't terrible, citing it's profits as the reason it isn't terrible.

He just wanted to say telling. He enjoys "hearing himself talk," so to speak.

apparently there are people different than you guys that actually get something out of a movie like this. It was made by Christians to help people with their marriages. I don't see anything wrong with this and its pretty impressive that its made so much money. And in my opinion the more people that are affected positively by this movie the better. You cynical assholes arguing about this are pretty pathetic. Can't stand it that something is successful because its relying on a Christian following to be successful. I don't understand what is wrong with that...
10/7/2008 10:10:03 AM
10/7/2008 12:17:13 PM
^^ The problem isn't that it's successful on the back of a Christian following. The problem is that it's ONLY successful BECAUSE of the Christian following. Granted, I haven't seen the thing, but the acting in the trailer is atrocious and every scene consists of some friend laying it all out in simple language like an elementary school play. This is the same problem I have with the Christian rock they put on those praise & worship compilations...it's not being promoted because it's a quality product, it's being promoted because it's blatantly Christian beyond any point of doubt. Meanwhile, Christian artists like Pedro the Lion get no support from Christian media because they're not thoughtless and heavy-handed about matters of faith in their material.
10/7/2008 12:34:52 PM
My marriage is failing because I can't buy any Chik-fil-A sandwiches on Sunday.
10/7/2008 12:34:58 PM
^winner (hey mike )
10/7/2008 2:12:07 PM
^^ ahhaha

My boss wanted to have a "date night" with a couple of guys I work with and our wives. He warned me that there were "some" Christian undertones. Feeling that I had to go, we went and sat through this incredibly terrible movie on opening night at the theatre. The acting and script in general were definitely direct to ABC family quality. The religious nature of the movie was also not subtle in the least. It felt like watching the 700 club. Im probably borderline between Christian and Agnostic and felt really really uncomfortable with the packed theatre of very religious people including my coworkers.Worst part of the movie was the stereotypical portrayal of black people. "Ohhhhhh lawd I know you didunt!!"
10/7/2008 2:18:15 PM
ok now you're being sacrilegious and racist.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10010214-fireproof/?name_order=asc42% at RottentomatoesNot good, but not terrible.
10/7/2008 4:34:09 PM
So I don't see what's wrong with something being successful because of a certain niche group that consumes it. Rap music is successful because people who like rap music consume it. I guess I don't seem to understand why this is "wrong."And I totally agree that the acting looks really bad from the trailer and overall it looks super sappy and probably not a good movie, but more power to you if you get something out of it an enjoy it. I mean, I wouldn't see it...
10/7/2008 4:47:48 PM
*Sigh* I'm not even a Christian, fucktards. I just get so sick of some of you know-it-alls putting down Christians for their beliefs, pursuits, forms of entertainment, and so on. Some of you neckbeards are beyond atheists; you're antitheists--you actively oppose belief in any specific diety or dieties. You have no problem, however, worshipping in the church of science and academia, with educators and scientists serving as your clergy. This is the way I envision some of you:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoVQ5AzDt_kNO INVISIBLE SKY DADDY!!!1
10/7/2008 4:52:38 PM
So....what are you then?
10/7/2008 5:33:00 PM

THE CHURCH OF SCIENCE!!!!!if i hear that phrase one more time i'm gonna drive off a bridge

no. 42% is slightly below average. so it's bad. but not terrible. i was expecting a lot worse from this movie, because after watching the trailer, it does look terrible.
