Is it just me, or have their results been terrible lately? It almost seems like they're trying to do too much semantic analysis rather than just searching for the terms/phrases that I type. Maybe it's the things I search for but the problem with this approach is that it's more likely to return results catered for the masses, which is not a good thing many times.

I've kind of been seeing this too. Also I'm getting random internet message boards more often in my searches... maybe it's just attributable to the fact that there's more of them popping up every day, but it's also possible that Google is trying to give results with the search terms/phrases in some sort of context.

Semantic analysis is tough in google searches is tough because of lexical ambiguities. It's almost better to let things be purely syntactic, at least in my opinion. Most work in semantics is pretty good but only in scraping together truth-evaluable propositions (at least to my knowledge).
