So after my father passed away, I inherited all of his guns. One of them is a revolver that belonged to my grandfather. I was hoping that some of the more knowledgable gun folks on here could help me determine the age and value of the gun. I would never ever sell it, but it would be nice to know. Here is what I know about the gun:The left side of the barrel reads: H&R "Sportsman", Double Action. The right side of the barrel reads: Harrington and Richardson Arms Co., Worchester, Mass., U.S.A, 22 LONG RIFLE CTG.There are no other markings on the gun other than the serial number on the butt, which starts with an N.Here are pics of the gun:Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

H&R Sportsman 999http://www.thefirearmsforum.com/showthread.php?t=24411- says

Yeah, I was told it was probably the 999, and someone also told me that the fact that the serial number started with an N meant it was probably manufactured in the mid 50's. any idea of the validity of that statement?
9/19/2008 2:54:17 PM
^i got all that from google.... Probably have to buy a book or take some good time searching thoroughly
9/19/2008 3:05:22 PM
i want it. i love .22LR pistols.
9/19/2008 4:56:27 PM
like i said, I would never sell it because it has a lot of family ties. just curious of the age/value
9/20/2008 1:29:03 AM
ill give you 5% more than its worth for the family ties.

I know that you can write in to Guns and Ammo magazine about old guns you have, and they'll tell you all about the history and value. I'll write this one in and see what they say about it. Send me the serial # to include, and the can probably pinpoint exactly when it was made.[Edited on September 22, 2008 at 9:08 AM. Reason : ]

^ I'll check when I get home and PM you the serial number.
9/22/2008 9:16:36 AM
Value of the gun is gonna be <$400. There were several on gunbroker that went for $150-300 range.http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=110009309
9/22/2008 10:35:34 AM
my plan is to clean it up and have it mounted on a plaque. I would more be interested in learning the history of the gun rather than the value at this point.
9/22/2008 10:36:26 AM
shoot it! a plaque for it would be a waste of a good gun. as others have stated they aren't that valuable but to you it is priceless. you cant hurt it if you take care of it, they are robust guns. $12.99 worth of ammo at Walmart will give you hours of entertainment.

^ that was my second option. just use it as a squirrel gun, but I live in the city so if I walk out in the yard and shoot some squirrels I'll get a ticket and they take my gun. I inherrited my Granddad's bolt action .22 rifle too, so I could seriously terrorize some squirrels if I lived out in the country. pic to come shortly[Edited on September 22, 2008 at 9:04 PM. Try looking under the barrel. The receiver is legally required to have the maker's mark and a serial number.
9/24/2008 7:35:24 PM
I'm an idiot, it was right in front of me ON TOP OF THE BARREL. just a little rusted over and my house has shitty lighting, oiled it up and I can read it now.Remington Model 514. .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle.
9/24/2008 7:43:46 PM
Nice. That's a classic plinker and varmint slayer if there ever was one. If you can get the serial, you should see when it was manufactured.
9/25/2008 11:50:16 AM
yeah I got the serial, i'll have to look when i get home
9/25/2008 2:07:48 PM
The H&R sportsman!! Nice gun, however not very valuable. What does give them a bit of collector value is the fact that it is a break action revolver. The entire front folds forward like a double barrel shotgun as opposed to the cylinder sliding out to the side for loading. They aren't super accurate, but they are highly reliable and a whole lot of fun. In that condition, if you waited long enough and found the right guy you could probably get $250 for it.
9/25/2008 3:33:41 PM
serial on the rifle is cc26
9/25/2008 6:56:19 PM
Accorfing to this http://www.remingtonsociety.com/questions/BLACKPOWDERX.htmit's manufacture date is in March of 1934.That's a date code, and since it's older than 1968, it won't have a serial number.[Edited on September 27, 2008 at 8:11 PM. Reason : .]
9/27/2008 8:10:31 PM
^ wow, that's pretty cool. It's in damn good shape to be that old
9/28/2008 1:58:26 AM
.22's are fucking awesome. They're so damn cheap to shoot. Really slow subsonic .22 rounds are the heat too, you can actually see them go downrange.[Edited on September 28, 2008 at 4:06 AM. Reason : ]

OK, so I was over at my Mom's house cleaning out some more of my Dad's things and I found his hunting rifle. A search of the serial number puts it's production date at 1974. It's a Remington Gamemaster 760, .243 Win. It also has a Tasco 3-9X32 scope on it that is in excellent condition. Any idea on what it might be worth?
12/13/2008 11:23:53 AM
$300 maybe $400 with the glass
12/13/2008 12:07:17 PM
ok cool. I also picked up 2 shotguns. One is a Revelation R310E 410 Gauge, the other is an Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight 20 gauge. I searched the serial on the Ithaca and it was manufactured in the early 70's. I can't find any info on the Revelation, other than an online auction where one sold for about $175. Any ideas?
12/13/2008 8:03:51 PM
pretty sure that revelation is a western auto gun made by mossberg. same thing as the mossberg 500A, which is very popular. it's a real workhorse. i had one in 12 ga. as my first shotgun.i love a .410 pumpalso, i have no idea what either of them is worth [Edited on December 13, 2008 at 11:07 PM. Reason : and that tasco scope doesn't really add any value to that .243]
12/13/2008 11:02:25 PM
Yeah, I am going to have some fun with that 410. The squirrels in my yard are already getting scared, I can tell. I just have to give it a good cleaning tomorrow.
12/13/2008 11:06:51 PM
looks like you've developed a decent hunting arsenal. get a decent scope and you're ready to go deer hunting man. between the 20 and the .410, squirrels, rabbits, and dove don't stand a chance.
12/13/2008 11:10:08 PM
$175 sounds fair for the Revelation. As said, it's a cheaper Mossberg 500 so price it accordingly. You can get 500s for ~$200-$250 or less.Model 37s can be a find. If it is in great condition, it could go for $400-$600 or more..
12/14/2008 12:39:49 AM
maybe $20 max. tasco is shit and a rail and rings are cheap. an old tasco and some scope hardware are pretty much negligible when deciding a value for the gun.it'd be like adding to the asking price of a car because i put in some kraco speakers and a new water pump.
12/14/2008 1:02:29 AM
Just let me reiterate that I am not planning on selling any of these, I would just like to know the value for insurance purposes. I am in the process of getting them all cleaned and oiled so I can have some fun with them.
12/14/2008 9:11:39 AM
$50 for the 410
12/14/2008 2:55:15 PM
SOLD!I guess everything has a price
