(sigma as in standard deviation)

so i understand typical standard deviation, that uses the sum of the squares... this is the so-called, "sigma of the individuals" or the "actual sigma"



what i don't understand is the "estimated sigma"



what is this R-bar and d2 ?

background info: Im trying to understand the difference between "Process Capability" (Cpk) and "Process Performance" (Ppk)

apparently, to correctly calculate Cpk, one must use this "estimated sigma" rather than the traditional Standard Deviation, the so-called "actual sigma"
