like, around New Bern?Would you swim or waterski in it?Would you jet ski in it?Would you not get any closer than the bridge over it?
9/13/2008 11:02:03 PM
real fucking nasty, from what I hear. However, this is a job for ALkatraz
9/13/2008 11:06:14 PM
reallllllllllllllllllll nastyhaha, i wont eat any fish out of it, and im scared to swim in it.outta new bern tho, if its brackish i wouldnt worry about it too muchanything before new bern, i dunno
9/13/2008 11:11:26 PM
Thank you hog farms!
9/13/2008 11:31:21 PM
It was pretty nasty when I went canoeing down the Triangle portion. I can only imagine its worse downstream.
9/14/2008 4:02:50 AM
There's come cat on here, I think Johnny Swank, that canoed down the whole thing. He would know for sure. I would hope it wouldn't kill you. I rafted down Crabtree Creek with Mr Grace, CrazyJ and some others. I had a couple open wounds, that I tried to bandage pretty well, that got soaked in the water. I'm still kickin. When do you head over seas?

Id swim and eat fish out of it.only danger is probably over real long term exposure[Edited on September 14, 2008 at 12:29 PM. Reason : I definetely wouldnt swim in it after a hurricane though]

Some of my friends say there are certain times during the year that you can dive in the Neuse and not worry about anything.Others say they'd never dive in the Neuse.I'm one of the latter...Grew up in New Bern during the whole 'red tides' thing. Left a nasty impression in my mind about that river. Then again I'm planning on diving in the Trent at some point for fossils, and the t ides throw the same water up into the Trent as the Neuse, if that makes sense. I was hoping to hit up the Meherrin this weekend but I'm bogged down with homework.

that, and other runoff like fertilizers, etcbut leftist snobbery is more easily targeted towards redneck hog farmers than when the beloved government fucks the dog.

9/14/2008 8:27:15 PM
the neuse at new bern is perfectly fine for swimming[Edited on September 14, 2008 at 10:05 PM. Reason : and you can eat the fish there with no worries]
9/14/2008 10:05:17 PM
all the time? wasn't there just another neuse fish kill?where is it NOT ok to swim in?
9/14/2008 10:12:01 PM
I wouldn't touch those fish with a 10ft pole.
9/14/2008 10:19:35 PM
if it gets bad enough they'll put up signs and you'll hear about it on the newsand the fish aren't killed by the fertilizers and/or hog shitthose pollutants cause an algae bloom that robs oxygen from the water and in turn kills the fish. it's the rotting fish after a fish kill that you wanna avoid, but you'll be able to see dead fish floating everywhere if that's the case.the neuse catches a really bad rap. it's not that bad.[Edited on September 14, 2008 at 10:20 PM. Reason : ^please don't...more for me][Edited on September 14, 2008 at 10:21 PM. Reason : .]

9/14/2008 10:22:29 PM
Just because the fish aren't dead doesn't mean they're not carrying Pfiesteria -- plenty of live ones with open sores.
9/14/2008 10:27:28 PM
so don't eat fish with open sores
9/14/2008 10:29:55 PM
Hey I'm planning to go diving in the Trent for fossils...just not the Neuse.
9/14/2008 10:33:40 PM
i think what i said earlier about the algae was wrong. i think the algae actually blocks out the sun, which reduces plant growth, which reduces oxygen actually.but i guess the pfiesteria would kill them toohell, don't go. i don't like getting continuously rocked by skiers when i'm fishing anyways [Edited on September 14, 2008 at 10:37 PM. Reason : trent is significantly cleaner]
9/14/2008 10:36:26 PM
But you can find such awesome shark's teeth and other various assorted fossils!! Most of the rivers in eastern NC cut through fossil beds...
9/14/2008 10:38:50 PM
just go to aurora and dig in that sandbox for some
9/14/2008 10:41:35 PM
Most of those tend to be a bit beat up. With these, they've been sitting in the river for millions of years, no one has sen them since they've left the mouth of the shark. They're all kinds of different colors (depends on the kind of muck they're embedded in) and they're in good condition. Usually the stuff from Aurora is nice but tends to be chipped due to the fact that they normally go through machines before you get to look at them. That, and the fact I love diving... The rivers around here offer interesting challenges. Low visibility due to tannic acid, stuff in the water, entanglement hazards, drunk boaters...but the rewards are pretty cool.Just need to get the time away from classes to jump in.
9/14/2008 10:44:21 PM
i guess you've got bigger hazards than nasty water
9/14/2008 10:46:06 PM
What's nice about the rivers is how long you can stay down. They're quite shallow (most in eastern NC are in the 10-20ft range or less) so you can stay down practically all day until you get tired/bored/cold/etc.That and the fact that river diving is free...edit: Duke -- sorry about hijacking your thread. The Neuse from New Bern down is perfectly fine. Swim, fish, ski, etc in it all you want. Years ago there were some issues, but I haven't heard of any illnesses from them. The only places I'd be cautious of the Neuse range from West of Goldsboro - East of Kinston.

http://www.esb.enr.state.nc.us/Fishkill/fishkillmain.htmNCDWQ Fish Kill reportsThe river is naturally pretty nutrient high (just look at the production of our estuaries), and fish kills do sometimes occur naturally. Personally I wouldnt worry about swimming in it unless I saw dead fish because that would just be gross. Actually NC has implemented a lot of new water quality monitoring and rules so the neuse is probably cleaner than it was a few years ago. Pretty sure State has done a lot of research that helped implement those rules[Edited on September 15, 2008 at 7:22 PM. Reason : linkage][Edited on September 15, 2008 at 7:23 PM. Reason : asdf]

The Neuse river's so nasty it made Speed Stick slow down. The Neuse river's so nasty it made Right Guard turn left. The Neuse river's so nasty its breath fails the state emissions test. The Neuse river's so nasty it went into a haunted house, and came out with a job application. The Neuse river's so nasty it has to creep up on bathwater.
9/15/2008 8:31:41 PM
The Upper Neuse RiverKeeper, Dean Naujoks, took me out on his boat for a Technician interview a couple years ago. He said the biggest problem with the river right now is runoff waste...from construction sites, sewers, hog farms, etc.

plenty of research has come out that has refuted the research that Dr. Burkholder did on the neurotoxic effects of pfisteria.
9/16/2008 2:28:17 PM
^ is that true? i haven't kept up with it much since i left nc statehow do you explain the medical/memory issues burkholder and glasgow experienced?i just found an ES&T paper from 2007 (moeller et al.) that claims to have characterized pfiesteria-produced toxinsthe whole pfiesteria story is pretty interesting, i think
9/16/2008 2:59:43 PM
It's not ranked as one of the top 50 most polluted according to this websitehttp://www.ewg.org/node/20399On this site it was listed as the 8th most endangered river in 2007 but I think they are off that list now with the Catawba river considered to be the most endangered river in the country as of 2008http://www.americanrivers.org/site/PageServer?pagename=AR7_MER2007
9/16/2008 3:44:00 PM
burkeholder is a fakeass bitch
9/17/2008 5:45:07 AM
^^ wow, It seems like both the Neuse and the Catawba made the list because of the population growth of NC. I actually grew up on the Catawba so I knew it was having some pressure from the drought and withdrawals but the #1 most endangered river in America? damn
9/17/2008 9:08:41 AM
Starting just upstream of New Bern, the Neuse is really just a tidal estuary so it's no better or worse than anywhere else around the inner banks.
