So, I have just got to get it out. Parking at school is ruining my day, every day (after college, of course). I don't know if the Transportation Dept. at State sold twice, three, a quadrillion times the parking permits as there are available spots, but parking in the Coliseum deck has turned into a fucking nightmare. I've been late to my MWF 11:20 since school started, so this morning I thought, okay.. it takes me 15 minutes to find a spot, I'll leave early. I drove around the parking deck, with about a hundred other people, for 35 minutes, and ah, fuck me again, late for class. And since when did everyone decide it'd be two way streets again? Follow the arrows, jackasses.I want my $300 back. What a blunderfuck.

Are the uppermost levels full when you arrive? Also, you might consider going to the transportation office and getting your permit reassigned to West Lot. Its further away, and will take an extra 5 mins to walk to class, but if you are really wasting that much time every day in the deck it might be worth your while. All of my classes start at 8:00 so parking was never an issue for me in the deck when I used it =(
9/4/2008 1:12:23 AM
Yes, the parking deck is absolutely PACKED during mid-day. Its ridiculous, they oversold the deck by a lot.Your DC parking permit will allow you to park in the West Lot, so you don't need to trade it in unless you wanted a cheaper permit. From there you could try and get lucky enough to catch a bus, as there is a bus stop right at the corner of the lot closest to Lee.
9/4/2008 2:00:41 AM
i thought transportation was always a blunderfuck
9/4/2008 2:39:58 AM
I also know from experience that many people w/o permits will park there. Especially when the pay lot on the bottom gets full. Chances are for a one hour class, you will not get a ticket.I got 4-5 tickets last year and still saved money versus paying every day.
9/4/2008 5:44:30 AM
I got an email the other day giving me the option of switching from the coliseum deck to the dan allen deck. I'm guessing they're trying to alleviate the problem?
9/4/2008 9:24:19 AM
^^agreed, I park there once a week and I don't have a permit. I believe they issue a warning first, before issuing a ticket on the car. So until then I'll just keep taking up somebody's permit space. ]
9/4/2008 9:26:11 AM
assholes
9/4/2008 9:42:40 AM
so glad i take the bus
9/4/2008 11:28:05 AM
I got an email the other day giving me the option of switching from the coliseum deck to the dan allen deck. I'm guessing they're trying to alleviate the problem?^ when did you get that email.. Id love to switch
9/4/2008 1:25:00 PM
was the worst I've ever seen it today around 11:09, there were like 15-20 cars just circling looking for spots in the upper levels, deck was 100% completely full. I circled for a bout 15 mins, said fuck it and parked illegally in an undisclosed locationFUCK THE TRANSPORTATION DEPT[Edited on September 4, 2008 at 2:05 PM. Reason : apparently i paid $texas to not have a parking spot on campus]
9/4/2008 2:04:28 PM
Word to the wise...the def do not give a warning ticket to all cars. That is apparently at their discretion. I have gotten tickets on three different rides. Only one of them got a warning. I think it has more to do with time and location. Also, a no permit ticket is $40.
9/4/2008 3:25:18 PM
I'm glad someone finally mentioned it. It is almost impossible to find a spot anytime between 11:00-4:00. I've gotten to the deck at 11:20 and still not found a spot by 11:45. The lucky ones happen to be in the right place at the right time when cars are pulling out of their spot. Other than that, it is real hit or miss. I have a class in Winston so parking at West Lot would be a real pain in the ass. I'd like to know more about the Dan Allen parking deck e-mail.
9/4/2008 6:01:23 PM
park at the meters in front of the bookstore if you cant find a spot. they rarely ticket there and tickets are only $10
9/4/2008 6:05:41 PM
people who park there without permits are huge douchebagsbut yeah, my classes were so early (8 am) or late (6 pm) last semester that I always had a parking space in the deck, thank goodnessleaving early to park in West Lot is probably the best idea so far
9/4/2008 8:31:08 PM
I park there tuesdays and thursdays 8am and at 2:30pm and haven't had a problem yet.At 2:30 it IS pretty packed, but there's always about thirty spots or so on the tip top level of the southern addition to the reynold's deck. I guess it's worse monday, wednesday, friday. I'm not there those days at all.
9/4/2008 10:32:14 PM
Shit is horrendous so far. I usually drive around for about 20 minutes when I go to my 11:45 T/H class. It's really compounded by all the fucktards who are insisting are driving the wrong direction this year.
9/4/2008 10:33:30 PM
I went to the transportation office and complained and they let me trade in my coliseum pass for a dan allen pass on the spot. The woman at the desk said they are trying to do it for as many people as possible.
9/4/2008 10:37:51 PM
9/5/2008 12:31:49 AM
I leave so I hit the parking deck at about 12:00 for my 12:25 class. I spend AT LEAST 20 mins circling the god damn thing until I find a spot.I'm always late for class, and leaving earlier doesn't help either as the deck stays full until kids get out at 12:15. The best strategy I have for getting a spot is to just wait by the stairwells and slowly follow people to their spots. But I agree with the OP, parking puts me in a bad mood every day and I am consistently late. I wouldn't complain so much if it didn't cost $300. I expect some sort of service/priority for that much cash.[Edited on September 5, 2008 at 9:19 AM. Reason : sds]
9/5/2008 9:18:41 AM
^ Sounds to me like they don't cost enough if so many people opt to buy them. But that's a different issue. Did anyone notice in the Technician article on parking the other day that not a single person interviewed actually had a parking pass, much less a DC pass? It was one person who used to drive to school but not anymore, and a freshman in FYC. Another freshman says he would prefer parking decks (to what? Banana muffins?), and a sophomore who turned down a CC permit because he wants to drive from his dorm, and that's not closer than a DC permit.
9/5/2008 10:21:37 AM
It's not a matter of cost. If you live off of campus you need to park somewhere, and most people would probably suck it up and pay no matter what the cost. The problem is they allocated too many.
9/5/2008 10:41:57 AM
^ that and people like me who park without a pass.]
9/5/2008 11:28:03 AM
sounds like some of yall need to suck it up, leave for class 10min earlier, and park on the top level
9/5/2008 1:04:44 PM
DO YOU WANT TO DIEGIVE IT UP TO ME
9/5/2008 1:14:57 PM
How does the parking situation compare at Dan Allen deck?
9/5/2008 1:51:59 PM
9/5/2008 2:50:59 PM
Haha, glad to know that we're all going through the same thing. If I've given any of you the finger or told you to "drive in the right fucking direction," I apologize. I'd expect the same from you.We can all be late as fuck together. I'm probably going to write a nasty letter to the transportation department. Just so I can get some great excuse, like trade your parking pass in! Instead of driving for 20 minutes, you can walk an extra 20!
9/5/2008 4:23:12 PM
why don't people just take earlier classes :obut yea I do agree, thursday I have class at 11:45 and it's just so stupid I just come to campus at 9am so I can have a spot and just do homework.
9/5/2008 5:25:21 PM
40 less passes is not going to help that much.....
9/5/2008 9:55:50 PM
9/5/2008 11:07:44 PM
9/6/2008 3:19:28 AM
^ apparently they did stop teaching economics, there would be a 'drop in quantity demanded', not demand. its a shift in the supply curve, not the demand curve. we want them just the same, we just buy less because of the price
9/6/2008 4:12:38 AM
I got an email offering me the DC to DD switch before the one went out about 40 passes being available. So although 40 passes isn't much, I'm sure they switched a lot of people before hand. I think I got the email because I put DD as my first choice in my parking options and they just went down the list and pulled the people who wanted to park there originally.
9/6/2008 6:09:30 AM
^^ and if they did that it might not be a bad thing because then someone near campus (valpark) might step it up and build their own deck which would be of a decent size taking the demand away from the parking spots on campus which would lower price and we would have less problems with no one finding spots
9/6/2008 10:01:01 AM
This isn't an economics question you stupid shit. It doesn't take a genius to pick up on the fact that the university is strapped for cash. Selling 50 more permits at $300 is serious money.Your example of jacking the price up to $700 makes no sense, as you know damn well Transportation could not get away with that. This whole student parking situation is not new. They have been allocating permits for YEARS...
9/6/2008 10:13:36 AM
I had no problem parking in the coliseum deck last year with classes starting mid daysucks for you
9/6/2008 10:29:12 AM
lol @ $15k being serious money for this university
9/6/2008 10:39:01 AM
9/6/2008 11:33:36 AM
^Valpark is a private profit seeking company, the transportation department isn't.
9/6/2008 11:48:55 AM
^ whats your point? Not being a private profit seeking company doesn't stop the bookstore from charging us the same (and sometimes more) than private bookstores. If the transportation dept actually has a surplus because of raising prices, then they can just put the proceeds into scholarships like the bookstore does, or reduce the transportation fee, or improve the bus system. Having too much money is never a bad thing, and don't forget the original purpose of reducing the magnitude of our parking cluster fuck.Plus, by charging a price below what they could (i.e. the market price) they're basically subsidizing parking at the expense of the university (i.e. the students and the taxpayers).[Edited on September 6, 2008 at 12:44 PM. Reason : convolutedness]
9/6/2008 12:42:56 PM
^my point is that transportation isn't suppose to be making profit, hence they keep their prices low. Simple as that. I agree they should raise prices and anything beyond their cost should go to scholarships and what not also. But they don't.
9/6/2008 1:24:33 PM
Trying to explain the economics of the situation is probably pointless, since people at this university can't even understand what arrows painted on the road mean.
9/6/2008 3:41:29 PM
The university should seize your vehicle and sell it at auction destroy it.
9/6/2008 4:41:05 PM
So lets say theoretically I can park in the deck, but I notice a car always parked there that isn't allowed. No sticker anywhere and somehow you know the person doesn't have one at all. Whose fault would it be if I 'accidentally' backed up into them? Mine because I backed into the parked vehicle, or would it be their fault for being illegally parked in the first place and should not have been there at all? If I still went there I'd have no issue denting the door or busting off a mirror because someone gets to park free where I paid $300 to.
9/6/2008 9:27:42 PM
^ just call transportation, not sure if its the same for decks but I got a lot of people tickets for parking at the meters in front of harris while i was working there
9/6/2008 10:14:20 PM
^^it would be 100% your faultthat's some of the dumbest shit i've ever heard. you seriously think it could be their fault?
9/6/2008 10:45:40 PM
^^^ yeah the only thing you should be doing is calling transportation and reporting the car and location for it to be ticketed/towed if you're that mad about itraging out on someone's car is just gonna come back to bite you eventually
9/6/2008 11:23:24 PM
especially with 20 witnesses circling the deck at all hours of the day
9/7/2008 12:00:32 AM
well shit that just encourages more people to park there without permits, might as well quit bitching. How many people take the time to call transportation? And if you think you'll get caught doing something as easy as denting a door, I'd like to ask how many people have had the windows busted out on their cars during the day and not had the person caught. I've personally seen at least 5 cars that were broken into for the several years I parked there.
