SO my ipod isn't working in Itunes. I can't get it to restore either. I get the following error messages:

iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Jeff's IPOD." Go to the Summart tab
in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.

I hit restore and update and I get an error message saying "Ipod cannot be restored because
it contains files that are in use by another application"

So I tried rebooting my system, restarting the ipod and I get the same error. I have no idea what to do now. can anyone help me out? Thanks.

I used winamp and a plugin to format the iPod, but the thing still can't update to the newest firmware. I get the same message: "Ipod cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application."

I have no idea what that is about. Anybody got any advice?

You could try forcing the iPod into disk mode, and see if it will restore from there. If not, you can try to format the iPod. I think you can do that from Windows Explorer/My Computer if the iPod is in disk mode. Format like a normal disk, and then try the restore. I've done this to my 2G 20Gb to recover from a botched update....

1. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons. The iPod will restart and the Apple logo will appear.
2. When you see the Apple logo appear, press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons. Your iPod should now say Disk Mode and look similar to the iPod in the picture.
3. At this point you will can connect the iPod to your computer to further work on the solution to your problem. The screen of the iPod should now say "Do not disconnect."

What it sounds like is your iPod is hanging on a file that it won't shut down for a restore.... Hopefully, Disk mode will allow it. If not, you might have to delete everything on the iPod manually and then restore it.

Hope this helps.... Like I said, I only have a 2g, so I am not sure that what works for mine will work for yours... Also, I am not sure about the disk mode instructions. I pulled those from a random wiki on the `net. (iPodWizard's Wiki I think).
