My parents gave me an old car a few months ago and was put in my name on 06/27/08 and then sold to another party on 07/17/08. I just got the tax bill in the mail today and the billing period on the car is from 06/10/08 to 05/31/09. How much of the total due am I responsible for since I do not own the car any longer?

(I already emailed Wake County, but I don't expect a reply for at least 2-3 days)

you've gotta show proof that you sold the car on 7/17. they might even have it on file. just call them up. or they will charge you per month for the latest activity.

i did this for someone at work. they sold the car in Feb. but the bill came and the date was recent..

tax office had on file that the license plate was turned in in Feb. so the bill just went back as Feb being the last activity.

Thanks baonest. And it is $34.00, not 7. If i just pay it and the guy who bought it pays too, the dmv gets paid twice. Screw the DMV...

it'll work itself out eventually, but you may want to send them a letter about when you sold it

I have had 3 or 4 of those bills come in the past few years and I didn't pay them. They will show up on their website as being unpaid at first, but with the letter they will go away.

you'll just have to call the revenue dept. and have them prorate the amount. i'm sure they'll want a copy of the bill of sale mailed to them before they do it, though.
