I need a pipe to use as a breaker bar. Is there a place where i have a good chance of finding a free one? i live near the intersection of gorman and tryon

1.Goto store2.Buy breaker bar3.Use4.Return5.ProfitWhat about that tire iron in your car? Will that not work?

it needs to fit over a large adjustable wrench. I'm securing a tie rod to the rack, and it needs something like 150 ft/lbs, so i need an extension

Turn off the water in your house.extract pipe from your plumbing.Use pipe to torque the bolt.Replace pipe in your plumbing.Profit.
8/11/2008 2:22:37 PM
you're kidding right, 150 ft/lbs? you should be able to pull that with a 1/2 drive ratchet for gods sake, what you need is to go to the weight room, not a cheater bar
8/11/2008 2:41:47 PM
well its in a weird position so i couldnt crank it down enough, and now its loose again. i autox my car so it sees much higher loads on the steering than your average car on a regular basis. already tried loctite but it didnt do much
8/11/2008 2:45:44 PM
a cold chisel and a 4# hammer will tighten it on there enough

The top tube and down tube on a bike frame make great breaker bars. Maybe if you call some bike shops they'll have a scrap frame that was cracked or badly bent. They usually just toss them in the dumpster, but it'd be easier to call around and get one of them to hold one for you so that you can come cut out the tube.
8/11/2008 2:55:07 PM
oh and the reason i gotta crank the shit out of it is because theres a special claw washer that keeps it from backing out, and it bent the shit out of it, and then broke it. the dealer wont have a replacement one for me for a week or so
8/11/2008 2:57:21 PM
take it to Jeepman and get him to weld it on

no, what you need is a damn filter on your computer to stop these stupid posts. did you ever hear of a TORQUE WRENCH? fuck, they're only what, $20 at harbor freight or something?
8/11/2008 5:32:17 PM
dude its a TIE ROD. you can only use an open-ended wrench or an adjustable on it. and theres supposed to be a lockwasher on it but i BROKE IT. so now i have to overtighten the shit out of it until the threads get f'ed up and it stays in placeThis is what a tie rod looks like. the end on the right screws into the rack. please tell me how i'm supposed to put a torque wrench around that end.and that picture is of my friend's jetta tripodding at an autocross. FWD cars are supposed to do that if theyre set up right.[Edited on August 11, 2008 at 8:21 PM. Reason : -]

I think he's kidding about the torque wrench.Regardless, I am weak as hell, so I'd need some bullshit like a breaker bar too.[Edited on August 11, 2008 at 8:23 PM. Reason : ]

I have a steel pipe that is 4' long, 1.5'' diameter if you want to borrow it.
8/11/2008 8:40:27 PM
i think my answer was on par with this thread. since you don't seem to get the point and it flew over your head, let me spell it out. tightening "the shit" out of something doesn't negate the need for a lock washer. you'd be better off just putting some loctite on it and hoping for the best rather than ruining your steering rack or another tie rod by over tightening it.[Edited on August 11, 2008 at 8:48 PM. personally i'd use JB Weld It's ok I've used it to seal oil galleys before.. it'll hold up just fine
8/11/2008 8:55:42 PM
they make a special tool for that that you can use an impact gun or a torque wrench with, but why am i wasting my time explaining, i told you how to do it half ass, why would you bother buying the proper tools?
8/11/2008 10:50:24 PM
put a big ass open ended wrench over the end.
8/11/2008 11:24:29 PM
ah dude come one.. i can tighten one of those with an adjustable wrench.but seriously.. what were you planning on doing with a breaker bar in that area? you dont use a socket on those suckers, you use the tool buttseks postedeither use a big adjus. wrench or the right size wrench, 30mm or 32mm i dont remember.. just about all those y0tas are the same though...btw, that "lock washer" will only do good if you hand tighten, any decent amount of tightness on those tie rods will hold them in place.[Edited on August 11, 2008 at 11:42 PM. Reason : btw, goto a junkyard or something for that washer. but it might be something they toss out. ]
8/11/2008 11:42:16 PM
well i put all my weight into it and it still backed out. im just gonna wait for the washer to come in next week. bike around for now.
8/12/2008 10:30:23 AM
take a hammer and smack the threads to flatten a few of em out, it'll be a bitch to get on, but i bet it won't come back off either

and as a testament to the fact that i drive my car entirely too hard all the time - just found out i snapped my rear swaybar in half at thscc this weekend good thing theyre sending me a free replacement
8/12/2008 7:29:17 PM
this niggayou dont abuse a corolla till you take it a rally cross son
8/12/2008 8:15:55 PM
^^ dude, you don't snap a swaybar in half just by driving it hard. i would've broken 50 of them by now if that's how it worked.
8/12/2008 8:41:34 PM
it was also a hollow bar. some earlier versions of this model are known to have defects, but they dont usually break unless you really apply some torsion to them. I'll post up some pictures when i take them to have them ship me a replacement.[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:39 PM. Reason : -]

this nigga...i can drive my 5 speed huffy on an autocross course and call it driving hard.its kinda common sense that autocross puts a big beating on your car.i have a feeling you're gonna be "that guy"..."i locked up my brakes during the ice storm and hit a tree, i need to get a big brake kit, i drive my car HARD"[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:50 PM.
