Im looking for a repair guy, someone who wont charge me out the ass just to look at my unit. I called one place a couple of weeks ago, and they wanted $89 just to knock on my door. Ive tried the guy whos number is on the side of my unit, but he wont return my calls (probably because he knows he did a shitastic job and doesnt want to fix it himself).

this time of year all HVAC companies are busy as hell, so finding one that won't charge just to look at it will be next to impossible

i had an AC issue and the garage folks sent me to tommy at the mission valley 66 (though it's a resco now, at the intersection of avent ferry and western)...he didn't charge me a dime to look at it, and afterwards i took it to two other recommended shops...one of them charged me $30 to look at it and then was TRIPLE what tommy charged...the other one looked at it for free but was retarded and i didn't trust his analysis

short of the story - take it to tommy...good guy, honest, and cheaper than everyone else

$90 is standard. if you get it repaired by them, they give you a credit. not bad.

don't know why this was moved to the garage...at no point did I refer to a car, truck, or any other vehicle. This is for a house (or condo specifically).

I'm fine paying some up front, but $90 is ridiculous IMHO, unless that actually covers some of the repair as well.

As others have stated, the $90 WILL be applied to the repair in most cases. They do it to keep the price shopping to a minimum. I refuse to do that, however. I found someone that didnt require that when my old unit needed repairs. I called them and said "Look, all I want is a fair estimate. If the price is reasonable, then you can fix it. But if I have to pay you for an estimate up front, I'll call someone else."

I just had my unit replaced with a high end Trane, and couldnt be happier. It saved me over 30% in energy in just the first month.
