8/1/2008 7:35:30 PM

8/1/2008 7:36:08 PM
That brewpub at Boylan and Hargett is opening this month. Not sure on the date.
8/1/2008 7:36:30 PM

I work at Solas. It's gonna be crunk as hell.[Edited on August 1, 2008 at 8:14 PM. Reason : They were supposed to open tonight, but it's been pushed back to Wed or Thurs next week.][Edited on August 1, 2008 at 8:19 PM. Reason : and just to clarify it's a restaurant with a lounge on the second floor that will resemble a bar]
8/1/2008 8:13:53 PM
did solas replace helios?
8/1/2008 8:35:29 PM
No. It's the same building kind of, but they're seperated. Helios is on the left and Solas is on the right and there's no way to go in between them without going around outside.
8/1/2008 8:37:13 PM
it was a separate building built right next to helios on the empty lot to the right of helios.
8/1/2008 8:39:35 PM
^ do you work there?
8/1/2008 8:42:22 PM
I know somebody who works there as "head waiter"and my brother went to look there for a bartending job.
8/1/2008 8:45:13 PM
I don't know who would be classified as a head waiter... They all seem pretty new and on equal ground. Who is it? I haven't met everyone there yet, but I know some people.[Edited on August 1, 2008 at 8:51 PM. Reason : ]

Derek Barnesmy brother needs a job. He's a great bartender. He used to work at Amore's on Hillsborough St. Hook him up, yo.
8/1/2008 8:52:48 PM
8/1/2008 9:02:04 PM
Derek doesn't ring a bell. And I would at least look at your brother for a job if I weren't at the bottom of the totem pole, but I'm kinda concerned with keeping my own job at the moment so making a recommendation might not be the best option. I can tell you that they're probably going to experience a reasonable amount of turnover especially at the bartender position and that if your brother really wants a job there to just go up and let them know. The management seems like a group that would be impressed by persistence (that's pretty much how I got my job) so he should go up there every week or two and just inquire about any openings. He might have to start as a barback, but that's probably gonna be a better job than a lot of places he could be bartending at TBH.^ Have you seen it lit up at night yet? It looks pretty awesome. We got out of orientation at like 9 last night and they had all the lights going. I also have to say the roof is incredible looking lit up at night.[Edited on August 1, 2008 at 9:07 PM. Reason : ]
8/1/2008 9:06:25 PM
yeah, my brother went up there on wednesday and they told him to come back and talk to the managernot sure if he did or not.
8/1/2008 9:09:58 PM
is this Niall's new place?
8/1/2008 9:10:16 PM
He definitely should. One of the main things they're looking for is enthusiastic people who really want to work there so let him know that if he keeps going up there even to the point of annoyance it can only help his chances.
8/1/2008 9:11:06 PM
^^ Yes it is. The same guy that owns the two Hibernian Pubs, so he's pretty game at the restaurant business. This photo really doesn't do the place justice though. The view from in front on the street is even better.
8/1/2008 9:24:54 PM
8/1/2008 9:31:02 PM
Found some better pictures.
8/1/2008 9:38:35 PM
This place looks fucking stellar. Almost to the point where it doesnt belong in raleigh. You'd think it came out of NYC, or Chicago or something
8/1/2008 9:39:43 PM
Theres talk that they may make the bar area 25+ only. Like The Office used to be. Funny how they are 18+ now haha
8/1/2008 11:56:06 PM
^That's news to me and i work there. The Office is just a bar. Solas is a restaurant. I highly doubt they'd impose an age limit. There are bars on all three floors, but they'll also be serving food on all three floors.Perhaps at the very least, they might have an age limit on the rooftop, but thats only because it'll probably be a hot spot and they want people up there buying drinks and not taking up space drinking water.[Edited on August 2, 2008 at 2:12 AM. 2 things: is there a for sure opening date yet? can i make reservations for then?
8/2/2008 11:14:11 AM
I cant tell you how many nights i spent hearing niall talk about his dream for this place. ill be interested to see how it all pans out.As for it looking like something more suited for Chicago or NYC, I recall them making a few 'research' trips to bigger cities to get ideas.
8/2/2008 12:14:31 PM
^^Thursday the 7th is the date they're shooting for. So far, it looks like it'll happen. I think they're going to be limiting the # of reservations they take for the first couple of weeks to allow for a learning curve for the staff. Better to keep the pace slow in the beginning and let the staff ease into it then have the place slammed opening night and having the service and kitchen crash. I honestly dont know if they're accepting reservations yet or not.^Its an ambitious dream no doubt. But the place is amazing, the management all seems very competent, the kitchen crew is great, and the food is awesome. I have no doubt it'll take off. [Edited on August 2, 2008 at 12:30 PM. so pumped for this place to open!my girl Sandy is a server there *crossing fingers for friends and family invite*

We did the elevator install there, that place is cool as hell inside compared to most of the spots downtown.
8/4/2008 11:14:51 PM
8/4/2008 11:17:54 PM
ill find out tomorrow. Pretty sure its still this thursday though
8/5/2008 4:11:10 PM
So i think public opening is being pushed back to Saturday. We did friends/family/VIPs yesterday and today and theres still some kinks to work out. Shit is looking good though.
8/6/2008 11:59:46 PM
Nope. Private invitation only on Saturday is what they told us tonight. Sunday is the public grand opening I think.
8/7/2008 12:00:46 AM
Oh ok. I was told that earlier in the day. I figure they might have changed their minds after tonight's service.
8/7/2008 12:02:24 AM
They told us that right before they started serving dinner. Seems there are still a couple of kinks with the communication between kitchen and front of house that need to be worked out. It's definitely coming together quickly though. Tonight was the first night they served alcohol.
8/7/2008 12:03:47 AM
I got dry-fucked in the kitchen tonight working saute station. Like half the menu comes off that stove, and all the tickets more or less came in at the same time. But all things considered, we pulled it off pretty well. I wasnt there monday or tuesday, and from what ive been told, tonight's service went a hell of a lot better than last night in both front and back of the house[Edited on August 7, 2008 at 12:07 AM. 8/7/2008 12:06:07 AM
Yeah, you can tell the kitchen is getting slammed by orders in this fake set-up. The first stuff comes out fine and then everything else is clusterfucked together because the spacing between when orders go in is completely unrealistic. Excellent food tonight though. This was the first time I got to eat in the past 3 days and basically everyone else in the restaurant had eaten at least once already. Had the filet with Kobe slider, lamb lollipops and duck quesadilla. Everything was great. Even if the service isn't quite where it needs to be yet, the food is top grade stuff.
8/7/2008 12:12:38 AM
Glad to hear it! Everyone in the kitchen was working in a different position than the previous night so im glad we could keep the quality high even though we're still all trying to get our rhythms down.
8/7/2008 12:18:13 AM
This has guido bar written all over it.
8/7/2008 12:19:02 AM
^ Wrong.
8/7/2008 12:20:46 AM
Good. Hope its a cool place.
8/7/2008 12:23:00 AM
I might be there tomorrow night! (or tonight if you wanna get technical)
8/7/2008 12:24:13 AM
Well it's not gonna be a "club" so the guidos would be out of their element.[Edited on August 7, 2008 at 12:26 AM. Reason : ^ You know someone who works there?]
8/7/2008 12:25:46 AM
I guess the blue lights outside give it that guido/club look.
8/7/2008 12:28:05 AM
I understand that. The thing the managers have been stressing though is that it's a restaurant before anything else.
