Anybody from State get a internship down in Spartanburg,SC at the manufacturing plant. I'm interested in doing one down there and wanted to know how it was?

I know they come to the career fair and I also am probably going into the auto industry when I graduate. Any other car companies you would recommend? I know mercedes is in Atlanta or near Atlanta I believe. Range rover? Not GM or Ford, forget them.

Thoughts?

They are my company's largest customer. Every quarter my company takes the top sales performers down there to test drive BMWs on their speed track. It's pretty fucking awesome.

It depends on what you like I suppose. I think he was under false impression that he might actually be doing more R & D stuff when it was more the droll manufacturing engineering type stuff. He told me it was the final straw when they wouldn't even let him see the new X5 they were testing at the time he was there.

I haven't really worked with a large company, but i've worked for NCSU and a consulting firm, and in support of the latter, it's nice only having one boss and being involved in something grassroots.

^ Yea I don't really mind working for GE, I am in the maintenance part so it's really hands on, which is what I like. My boss is a ME with his PE. He is pretty much my only boss and I kind of just do my own thing here (project that is).

I know when I looked at BMW for a co-op position a couple years ago, they flat out said they would not hire you right out of school even if you co-oped for them. Plus they were only gonna pay like 9 something an hour. But there was included corporate housing.

A guy I work with is finishing up a summer internship with them. He is bi-lingual (German/English) so his experience has been awesome. Seems like they put him on very meaningful projects.

BTW - I live in Charlotte and travel to Greenville about 1x/month. Downtown Greenville is one of my favorite places to visit for a relaxing weekend.

I used to write for the newspaper in Clinton, SC, which is about 30 min down 26E from Spartanburg. I did spend a lot of time in Spartanburg though since there wasn't a whole lot going on in Clinton.

It's nothing special, but it's not horrible either. I lived down there for a year, so I guess you can feel free to ask any questions. No guarantees I'll know the answer though.

I am have been to the plant a few times also for business, as my company does an increasing amount of work for the body shop (body fabrication). If you are interested in working in a support role, especially with the control systems, that particular area (X5, X6, and so-to-be-stopped Z4 lines) works Sundays. Every Sunday. Forever. They have a floating weekend day every week. But still. Every Sunday. They wanted my boss to quote labor cost with Sunday as straight time. Eh.

When in manufacturing, you always work around production. That plant especially.

However, its worth the trip down there just to walk through the plant. Unbelievable.
