in our apt for the next month and a half. She's a real nice lady and my roommate is a good friend. The thing is they're Indian and the apt has a really strong curry smell now. This was never a problem before, since my roommate ate american food, but his mom just made some Indian food and the odor is way too strong. I dont want to sound like a douchebag and I dont mind the smell, but I think the smell will start to stick to me and thats not cool. How do I approach this? also... he's an engineer making bank right now working for a company in Cary. Im also an engineer and being his friend he can set me up at his company also making bank so I dont want to jeopardize our friendship over this.

start spraying airfreshener all the time and lighting incense...if they do not pick up on it, then start making an even bigger deal(ie. like announcing that you are spraying it because it stinks, or that you hate the strong odor of curry)
7/28/2008 12:02:08 PM
unplug appliances or turn off gas and pretend like they are broken
7/28/2008 12:08:18 PM
go ride the wolfline until you become one with the aroma
7/28/2008 12:11:05 PM
did he ask you if his mom could stay?
7/28/2008 12:12:54 PM
just go in the living room and yell:LETS DO LUNCH, K?
7/28/2008 12:16:13 PM
i guess just ask yourself this:is it more rude to have some foul odor clinging to your clothes etc or more rude to ask someone to keep their foul odor contained(rhetorical question btw)

Is his mum hot?
7/28/2008 12:21:18 PM
pretend that you are developing an allergy to the curry. (passive)
7/28/2008 12:21:37 PM
"the smell of your cooking is a nuisance and I'm not letting you live here if you are going to be a nuisance"
7/28/2008 12:23:56 PM
I hear that the air ionizers (like Sharper Image sells (used to?)) gets rid of the curry smell. You might gently suggest that your friend purchase one for the apartment.
7/28/2008 1:06:08 PM
define "bank"
7/28/2008 1:21:39 PM
starting off as mech eng. he's making 60k a year.... not including his bonus
7/28/2008 1:23:13 PM
how close are you?maybe you can explain the problem to him stating that its not that you think it smells gross, but it's just a strong smell and you prefer not to smell like food when you are going to work, going out etc.... (that sounded mean, but make sure to be genuinely nice)maybe you could work it out where you keep the windows open when she cooks or something similar at least.[Edited on July 28, 2008 at 1:53 PM. There's nothing you can do other than run a duct to the kitchen from outside. Among spices, curry has one of the strongest scents.[Edited on July 28, 2008 at 1:55 PM. Reason : ]

I wouldn't worry about it. I use to work exclusively for the Indian community and I don't think that the curry smell sticks to you unless you eat it on a regular basis. My hubbie has a SENSITIVE nose and he never noticed that I would smell like curry after spending 8 hours at an Indian person's house.
7/28/2008 9:19:08 PM
Is she hot?
7/28/2008 9:43:20 PM
you should just offer to cook sometime, that or go out to eat.
7/28/2008 9:53:08 PM
kick her in the nuts
7/28/2008 9:56:04 PM

7/28/2008 10:23:49 PM
Just close the door to your room if you don't want your clothes & things to smell like curry. There are obviously worse things in the world that the rest of your house could smell like. If you have a HUGE issue with it, just make sure that they use the exhaust fan when cooking and it should take care of a vast majority of it.

Insist that your room is part of Pakistan and blow shit up in the living room until they cede it to you.
7/28/2008 11:51:23 PM
i got to eat some of his moms cooking tonight and it was real good. I dont mind the smell at all its just that I dont think the new roommates will. Also, the curry smell dissipate pretty quickly so it wasnt an issue. Still strong enough for those who arent use to it though....which im assuming the new roommates wont be.

Bang his mom, but do a horrible job of it. Just get your's and get out. That'll get'em both and their curry out of there real quick.
