Hows it going? Im from the North so Im mildly retarded when it comes to bugs. Ive had this sucker in my stairwell for a couple weeks. Was wondering if anyone knows what it is? Id say its about 1.5 inches in total length
7/24/2008 11:11:37 PM
Keep your distance. That's an eastern brownback that can actually spray venom over 2 feet.
7/24/2008 11:13:55 PM
sarcasm?
7/24/2008 11:16:01 PM
just 2 feet? It can jump nearly 6, as well.
7/24/2008 11:16:40 PM
Shit, you're right.
7/24/2008 11:19:31 PM
damnit. im not concerned that its going to eat me in my sleep. just nerd curiousity
7/24/2008 11:19:38 PM
ew looks scaryi'd def stay awayhope for a bat to eat it or something
7/24/2008 11:19:54 PM
KILL THE FUCKING THING
7/24/2008 11:22:02 PM
spray it with hairspray!(good reason to talk to a hottie next door... just say you're worried for her safety and need hairspray to kill it. you're a man and don't have any)
7/24/2008 11:25:06 PM
haha well its sort of a neighbor now. i cant just kill it. unless i can think of a good way for it to go out. unfortunately, no hotties in the building. for that matter, no girls within 5 years of me
7/24/2008 11:40:03 PM
those eastern brownbacks are killers, we lost 5 men to one last week
7/24/2008 11:41:59 PM
KILL ITIMMEDIATELY
7/24/2008 11:49:06 PM
yeh, killing it is usually a good answer to any question regarding a bug
7/24/2008 11:51:20 PM
7/24/2008 11:52:19 PM
Just collect it in a bucket or trash can and transport it back outside where it would probably be happier. I am as scared of spiders as anyone but even I would not advocate for its mindless killing simply for existing.
7/25/2008 12:38:38 AM
How in the hell do you sleep at night with that thing under your stairwell. I would kill it right now if I were u.
7/25/2008 8:40:19 AM
Well it's probably eating tons of bugs that would otherwise annoy the hell out of you. At least it probably keeps to itself.
7/25/2008 9:18:54 AM
7/25/2008 9:24:48 AM
haha Fayet-nam
7/25/2008 9:30:02 AM
whenever i find spiders that I don't know what they are, I shoot a picture of them to the NCSU Entemology dept. Those nerds love that shit.
7/25/2008 9:50:11 AM
i love spiders...i keep them aroundthey serve the same purpose as the feral cats i feed - they keep the obnoxious creatures down to a bare minimum
7/25/2008 10:02:40 AM
I'd say it is some type of nursery web-weaver, but I can't find an exact match on that color pattern. I'll keep looking.
7/25/2008 10:10:58 AM
7/25/2008 10:16:02 AM
DAAAANG, SOMEONE id THIS THINGi KILLED A SIMILARLY SIZED WOLF SPIDER IN MY KITCHEN THE OTHER NIGHT
7/25/2008 11:27:20 AM
7/25/2008 11:58:46 AM
brown recluse
7/25/2008 2:13:20 PM
^you sure?
7/25/2008 2:26:16 PM
I haven't seen one of those in real life, just on "world's dead list spiders" on discovery channel. It is a eastern brownback alright.I think the web has a toxic effect to human skin as well, like poison ivy but much worse. Usually leads to permanent scarring if you get the rash.
7/25/2008 2:34:52 PM
7/25/2008 2:44:46 PM
it's not a brown recluse
7/25/2008 2:51:09 PM
I have a couple that look quite similar in my house, haven't been able to ID it either- i made a thread asking kitty B a few weeks ago sorry
7/25/2008 3:53:04 PM
just eat it....
7/25/2008 4:36:16 PM
Holla atcha boy...I'll bring some of my peeps over there and we'll regulate
7/25/2008 5:22:53 PM
Probably just some species of wolf spider, we had a ginormous one outside living in our plant. My house is literally infested with house spiders for some reason. Never seen any other bugs but spiders (so it's beyond me what they're eating). *shivers*
7/26/2008 6:48:58 AM
i got a gallon of home defense max and created a perimeter around our house as well as around every doorway and window inside and out. no motherfucking mutant spiders are getting in my motherfucking house.
7/26/2008 8:31:21 AM
kill the damn thing before it kills you"saving spiders' lives" = there's enough of those nasty fuckers around, that killing any in your house/apt won't wipe them out
7/26/2008 3:51:18 PM
ahahahah Bobby is serious about that shit, son
7/26/2008 4:08:08 PM
^^^I do that too[Edited on July 26, 2008 at 4:17 PM. Reason : aint no bugs on me]
7/26/2008 4:17:07 PM
7/26/2008 5:05:04 PM
thats a brown recluse for surecall animal control if you really dont want to fuck with it but those can kill before you know you've been bitten and can even hope to get the anti venom.
7/26/2008 6:47:19 PM
Im a nerd. I shot an email to the entomology guys and Dr. Charles Apperson (pest guy) about it. Just said it was a bet between some friends. So we should have an answer soon.
7/26/2008 7:14:29 PM
in case I wasn't clear earlier.
7/26/2008 7:15:55 PM
7/26/2008 7:23:42 PM
Doesn't look like a brown recluse to me, the pattern and shape is all wrong. The torso is very elongated compared to a brown recluse and lacks distinct color variation, such as in this image:Also, the spider lacks (from what I can see) the three pairs of eyes that is typical of a brown recluse, as evidenced here:
7/26/2008 7:39:32 PM
Greg,This a spider in the family Filistatidae, Kukulcania hibernalis, sometimes called the southern house spider. It is very common on and in buildings here on campus, and is frequently mistaken for the brown recluse spider. Females may live for several years, trapping insects in the irregular strands of silk that radiate out from their retreats. So far as I know, it's venom is no more dangerous to humans than is the venom of most other spiders, and they're careful to avoid contact with us. You can find a lot more information about this species on line.Davehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_house_spider
7/27/2008 1:29:32 PM
ah ncsu entomology strikes again.
7/27/2008 2:04:25 PM
you are all pussies cute spider. it'll keep the bugs at bay.
7/27/2008 3:01:23 PM
I woulda killed that fucker without thinkin twice
7/27/2008 3:06:35 PM
The handbook says to "kill it with fire."
7/27/2008 5:36:17 PM
Quick, somebody go edit the Wiki to reveal the true venom spitting nature of that arachnid death machine.
