IBM T42It gave me a "Fan Error" on start up a few times, but that message eventually went away. Now it starts up, but if I move the laptop at all it cuts off and won't turn back on for another 10 minutes or more. Could there be a bad connection with the CPU fan that causes it to do that, or would the computer stay on if the fan isn't working?

Fans in t42s aren't directly attached to the cpu. Most thinkpads are cooled by one fan for the entire chassis.http://www.insidemylaptop.com/ibm-thinkpad-laptop-displays-fan-error-message-on-bootup/This is a pretty easy fix that anyone should be able to do on their own

Any chance a bad A/C adapter could have been shorting it out? I just replaced the fan and not 5 minutes after using it, the wire for the adapter broke right where the base of the plug is where it plugs into the computer. Started sparking and shit and melted the rubber around the wire. It had felt like it was starting to wear out before, so that might explain why it only cut off when I moved my laptop. Time to buy another A/C adapter also.

You solved your own problem. Congrats!

Yeah but I've had A/C adapters break before like that...can that short out the computer? It's still do it when I had a full charge on the battery.[Edited on July 21, 2008 at 3:28 PM. Reason : .]

its still doing it after fan replacement, you say?how did you get the FRU that fast? did you take it from another t42?

I ordered it a few weeks ago, just never had time to put it in. I'm not sure if it's still doing it because I have no A/C adapter now and my battery is dead.
