I'm in this class now, and attempting to answer this question:"Why did Galileo keep circular motion in his new physics? Why did he not accept Kepler's model as the most accurate astronomy?"Any help would be appreciated. kthx.If you have questions about other material in the class, someone on here (including me!) might be able to help.

Because circles are awesome. Isn't circular motion perfect motion? Epicycles etc...Think about that perhaps.
7/17/2008 7:38:56 AM
Yeah, all I got was he considered a circle a "perfect shape" and preferred the perfection of celestial circles on aesthetic and philosophical grounds. I feel like that's not enough of an answer.

As far as I know Kepler believed that the planets were held in orbit by "magnetic" forces and Galileo did not prescribe to this theory. (although the "perfect" circular orbits were certainly another reason)and upon some googling you could also add that Kepler was right but some people didnt go along with his idea of elliptical orbits because he didnt "prove" the why/how and it wasnt until Newton that this was discussed in depth.[Edited on July 17, 2008 at 8:24 AM. 7/17/2008 10:28:22 PM
Kimler is awesome. One of the only classes I ever had where I could describe my note-taking as voracious. I wanted to know everything that guy knew ... he's the man.
7/18/2008 11:23:11 AM
I lent my notebook from History of Science to somebody two years ago and I have yet to get it back. It's really pissing me off, that's one of the only notebooks I want to keep forever.
7/18/2008 11:27:14 AM

7/25/2008 8:37:31 AM
Haha Kimler is awesome, I had his class back in 2006.

Anyone have a good answer for these questions on the study guide? I've got a lot of the other questions completed if you need help with those.1. What were the sources of excitement, motivation, and direction for the new mechanical philosophy in the 1600s?
7/30/2008 5:31:20 AM
shoulda came to my study group!although, it took us 2.5hrs to go through the guide and I still didn't feel like I did well on the testbut that might be a good thing, cause I thought I did well on the first test and did bad, so in theory, if I feel like I didn't do well, maybe I'll do well? I guess I won't be surprised if I do poorly but be filled with glee if I do well, similar to NC State sporting events
7/31/2008 7:04:25 AM
Shit, I didn't know you had a study group. How'd you do on the test?I fucking wrecked it. 100%
7/31/2008 1:58:41 PM
