methods of cooling? Absolutely. Hell I can find something in my room that would probably do the same thing as this. All it does is insert between the computer and whatever its sitting on to let air flow underneath the laptop. If you want one that cools better I'd suggest looking at the hundreds of ones with fans, many of which would be cheaper than this simple thing.

Most of the major electronics shops should carry one of those targus laptop cooling pads with the crummy fans. They work. They'll die after a while but they work.

A cutting board with some of those furniture moving pads would do the same thing for cheaper.Fans can make a difference, but usually the biggest benefits are for the computers with a large number of vents/fan inlets on the bottom.

what kind of "laptop" really needs this, buy a laptop that has proper cooling in the first place

^ that's a silly statement...if you're doing something that runs the processor and hard drive at full for a long period of time (HD transcoding, for example), it'll get downright toasty...granted, i've yet to have a NEW laptop cut off, but they get HOT, and the cooling pad option CAN reduce heat build-upi have a laptop with a T9500 and 7200rpm 250gb hard drive, and when i AM transcoding HD audio/video, that sucker gets unbearably warm if it's on my lap...i got this antec cooler (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834999850) for $5 AR and while it's not perfect, because of where the fans are on the pad and where my intake is on my laptop, it actually increases the amount of fresh air available for cooling while also removing it from direct contact with my lapfor $5, it was definitely worth it

I'm trying to become more energy efficient and make my stuff last as long as possible. I also don't want to support mindless consumerism in the process, which I figured this was. I think I'll open the lappy up and check for dust bunnies.

We have a couple of those <$25 targus cooling pads from wal-mart and it works like a charm. Have an older HP that is a beast and would burn the fuck out of you but now the bottom is actually cool to the touch and it runs a lot cooler.
