I'm going through a bunch of "engine knock" youtube videos and every one's arguing between piston slap and bearings. Plz to find me a video of true engine knock, thanks.

What is generally the cause of detonation, if there is such a thing as a "general" cause? My parents' Crown Vic pings pretty severely going up hills, I noticed recently. Only calls for 87 octane so they're not using the wrong type of gas.[Edited on July 10, 2008 at 7:10 PM. Reason : r]

sort of like the sound of a chain dragging the road.

^^ if the engine timing is off and/or the car is running too lean

A lot of times with older engines what you're hearing is pre-ignition which is pretty similar to detonation. It's fairly common as a result of carbon build up creating a hot spot that ignites the fuel early.I had an old truck that would ping like crazy with 87 octane, but it ran almost perfect on 89 and never even had a hiccup on 93. I just ran 89 in it. Maybe your parents should give it a try in the Crown Vic. If it's pinging that bad they might actually get enough extra mileage out of it that it becomes cheaper to run a higher octane.
