I'm going to be moving into a house soon, so dishes are now an option. I was wondering what TWW's experiences were with HD/HD-DVR with TWC, DishHD, and DirectTV.

I noticed that DishHD allows you to add your own HDD to your box for a $40 service fee, which sounds interesting.

Theres a difference though, at least between Dish and DirecTV.
Both DVRs have approximately 500GBs in storage.
With Dish, the added drive gives you additional space. If you add a 750GB drive, you have 1.25TB of storage.
With DirecTV, the added drive replaces your internal space. If you add a 750GB drive, you have gained only a net 250GB for 750GB total.

Yeah the Dish fee is stupid, but then again, who wants to have to buy a 750GB drive just to get 250GB total? Plus, I think Ive seen many more complaints about the DirecTV DVR erasing the entire external HD than with the Dish DVR.

If you go with Dish, I could also give you a $50 referral refund bonus .

ok heres another question.

between dish and directv, which one makes it easier to get the files from the hd dvr, to an external i already have with eSATA, and then to my pc where i can do whatever i want with them

im assuming they have some drm on them that makes it not just plug it in and im ready to go, but maybe they don't

I just called and ordered my NFL Sunday ticket.


I got Sunday Ticket + Superfan = $249


That gets me all the games, and the preseason, and some other player tracking shit, all in HD.


If you're getting the ticket, make sure you realize that it wont be HD games unless you score the superfan add-on.

DirecTV DVRs use a proprietary filesystem AND they protect the content. It's easier to connect it to a TV tuner in your PC and record it that way than it is to access the data on the HD.

The DirecTV drive is actually 360GB, but I got a 1TB drive for $180. It's not bad, but I'd like to have that additional space. But 1TB is good for hundreds of hours of HD. I've never gotten it more than half full, even when I had it set to record every episode of Law and Order on TNT in HD (6 episodes a day). With 50 episodes of L&O and about 20 movies, it was about half full.

I'm going to suggest going with the broadband internet only option. Between Hulu and Netflix I get all the entertainment/movies I need without having to limit myself to what's scheduled. Sure I don't have access to two of the major networks current shows and I have to wait an extra week for some of the new ones, but the vast catalogue of movies and tv series means I'm almost never without something really good to watch.

This is what I ended up settling on when I just couldn't stand the damn SA8300HDC DVR from TimeWarner breaking on me every few days. I went through 5 of them in 3 months; I would have gone through 4 times as many if I could have swapped them out any faster.
