Tyson Gay just ran a 9.68 in the 100m, fastest time ever, too bad they aren't giving him the record because the wind was blowing.[Edited on June 29, 2008 at 8:03 PM. Reason : not Rudy]

since when are natural events factored into competitions?

Don't know but apparently wind can make you run faster, they should take into account what direction it is blowing, I mean if he was running into it or it was a crosswind then shouldnt he get extra time added? lol
6/29/2008 8:06:23 PM
Damn it also has to suck to break a world record only to be swimming against Michael Phelps who destroys it.
6/29/2008 8:14:04 PM
i mean if a baseball player sets the homer record playing at coors field or something, sure they might mention that when talking about it, but they wouldn't put an asterisk next to the record or anything
6/29/2008 8:14:43 PM
he'll test positive for performance enhancers in a few weeks anyway
6/29/2008 8:17:00 PM
I dont understand why sprinters need/have big biceps.
6/29/2008 8:34:24 PM
Wow... so much ignorance in this thread. i though y'all were sports junkies?
6/29/2008 8:43:24 PM
Plus arm movement is just as important in sprinting as leg movement. Also, he already set the world record yesterday with a 9.77, so he only would've broken his own record with the 9.68 today.
6/29/2008 8:47:11 PM
6/29/2008 8:48:40 PM
^^ He broke the US record yesterday. That wasn't the world record.
6/29/2008 8:51:52 PM
6/29/2008 9:16:02 PM
that's 23.1 mph
6/29/2008 9:35:39 PM
Wind faster than 2 m/s [obviously in the direction of the run] disqualifies any records set. That's the rule.Tyson Gay ran in 9.68 sec with a wind of 4.1 m/s. Some guy ran a 9.69 sec 100 m sprint in the mid-90s with a 5 m/s wind, and you don't see that being quoted as the world record, do you? But yes, Tyson's time of 9.68 is the fastest under any conditions. I don't know if the Guinness Book of World Records and other recording bodies have that category or not, but if they do, his name will be there. The current world record is 9.72 sec by Usian Bolt, a Jamaican dude. Before that it was Asafa Powell, also Jamaican, at 9.74 sec.Did you know that altitude also factors into records? Beyond a certain critical altitude, records are not counted.BTW, how come th women's record of 10.49 sec by Florence Griffith Joyner (1988) has not been broken yet? And same with the long jump... set by Bob Beamon in the 1920s or something, at 8.9+ meters. Actually, that was broken in the last decade, I think by [some] Powell... but still, why are those 2 resistant to being broken? And same with 200 m and 400 m, both held by Michael Johnson, in themid 90s I believe.
6/29/2008 9:35:50 PM
I ran a 15.3 in 5th grade, think i can get it to around his time ?
6/29/2008 9:42:13 PM
It's certainly possible that the best athletes of all-time in those particular events lived 80 years ago. Maybe it'll just take someone even more special than them to break those records.Michael Johnson was a beast in the 400. I'm pretty sure he broke that record at the 96 Olympics in Atlanta and I'm pretty sure I remember him doing it by a lot.
6/29/2008 9:42:30 PM
Yup, Michael Johnson broke the 200m and 400m records in 1996 at Atlanta. He truly was a beast. The 200m record he broke was a long-standing record from 1979. Michael's time is 19.32 sec, which is 9.66 sec x2!But the thing I remember and liked best about him was his running style. He ran with a totally upright torso [ ]. In fact, if you look at the pictures of him in a race with others, you will scratch your head.BTW, the women's 200 m record is also by Florence Griffith Joyner from 1988.

ok so sprinting and whatever random altitude-based sport are the only ones? sorry i'm not an expert about the rules of sprinting
6/29/2008 10:06:50 PM
Michael truly was a badass...I remember the gold shoes that Nike made for him
6/29/2008 10:12:17 PM
since this thread was about sprinting, i assumed "competitions" as said by you referred to sprinting competitions.and the "random altitude-based sport" is the long jump and the high jump. maybe sprinting as well (lower force of gravity --> run faster).BTW, where else would these (wind speed, altitude) things matter? you think wind speed would affect boxing? football? volleyball? hockey? and no, as i said, you don't have to be an expert... just exercise some common sense.
6/29/2008 10:31:18 PM
I bet the timing on those old records is questionable

^^^, ^no it is not dumb. of course wind speed would affect the running in footbal, field hockey, etc... but not so much as to change the nature of the whole game. you run in both directions, and running is just one aspect of the game. there is no way to prove this, but a wind speed of 3 or 4 or 5 m/s would not affect the outcome of the whole MATCH, which lasts a damn lot of time.but in sprinting... running is all you are doing, and just for a few sec. so of course they take wind speed into account.^^i see... haha, the sprinters wish!
6/29/2008 11:15:13 PM
6/29/2008 11:17:49 PM
yeah but for running it's affecting everyone, thus a fair match
6/29/2008 11:19:16 PM
nah, a slight variance in the velocity field in front of the runners could lead to an unfair disadvantage for some
6/29/2008 11:27:44 PM
even if i didn't know i would easily find out who is American and who is a foreigner in this thread.0EPII1 we grew up following the same events. i lived in front of the TV during every world championship in Athletics and during olympics. Now i am forcing myself to follow mediocre and utterly RETARDED sports such as baseball and football or better yet golf, where fat people with guts are considered athletes.
6/29/2008 11:33:09 PM
damn, if only you had played baseball, that coulda been you...right?
6/29/2008 11:34:01 PM
They're there to hit a ball, not sell jeans.
6/29/2008 11:34:11 PM
Man, it'd be so awesome to be able to walk around knowing that you were (by at least one definition) the fastest man alive.

John Dalyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6HXfA__e14I think he was ranked like #65 or something in 2004...dont know what he's ranked now though.Either way, he was ranked pretty high and is a fatty.

Usain "Lightinign" Bolt, wins gold with 9.69 sec, breaks his own world record of 9.72 sec.He was waaaay ahead of everybody else. The 2nd place dude clocked 9.89 sec, which means he was almost 2.5 meters behind Bolt That's the largest margin of victory in the Olympic 100 m sprint in the past 40 years! But if you think that's great, consider this:
8/16/2008 7:28:52 PM
^ It was pretty much a given that Bolt would win the 100m if you watched the races leading up to the final. Dude basically jogged to a 9.92 in the quarters.
8/16/2008 7:52:44 PM
where can i find video of it?i can't find it anywhere online.
8/16/2008 8:37:30 PM
youtube has everything i guessbut also that yahoo link i posted has the video.
8/16/2008 8:40:47 PM
He looks strong, too. They have to teach him to catch a football, then he can make $texas
8/16/2008 8:46:23 PM
nope, no video on youtube or yahoothose are just videos with screenshots only
8/16/2008 8:58:35 PM
go to http://www.nbcolympics.comgeez peoplebut this dude is completely classless, he pull up before the finish, he just wants to win an rub it in everyone's face, he's not even interested to do his bestif i saw him on the street i'd punch him in the face
8/16/2008 9:23:39 PM
no you wouldn't, faggot, because you couldn't catch him. They are going to replay the final before the swimming happens. They just replayed the semifinals.
8/16/2008 9:28:38 PM
when you are the best in the world in something, you have earned the right to rub it in everyone's face.you will punch his face? ok. he is probably 2 times as fast and 5 times as strong as you are.[Edited on August 16, 2008 at 9:31 PM. Reason : ]

he sounded like an aright dude when they talked to him after one of his prelim races, he just likes to showboat. Theres nothing wrong with that.
