Somehow flies keep working their way into my apartment. I come home from work and there are usually 2 or so buzzing around somewhere. I don't know where they are coming from... I clean my kitchen after use and take out the rubbish whenever it is full (I can't think of anything else that would support flies... nothing is smelly or rotten). I've checked all my food containers and haven't seen any maggots or whatever. I suspect the air conditioner/heat outside may have something to do with it since they only started appearing in the past month or so. I put some fly paper up on the walls and it catches them, but does anyone have any idea where they might be coming from and how to stop them?An odd thing I've noticed though is they are always pretty slow (for a fly). Lots of times instead of flying away when I try and kill them, they just kind of walk away as if they are tired. My cat probably chases them all day and they probably can't find food/water/whatever it is flies use for nourishment, but it might be related.

They could be attracted to the cat's food or pretty much anything that smells. I know we had a couple in here and figured out they were attracted to my fish aquarium where a teeny bit of fish food had gotten on the rim of the aquarium. They come in usually when you open the door because the air pressure kind of pulls them in. That's why you see those fans at the doors of lots of restaurants and food stores.

I've got a few flies on the fly paper, but I'd rather prevent them coming in then kill them when I see them.

Try running drano down the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Sometimes unpleasant gunk can build up in there that provides a nice haven for insects. Also, do a search for food items hiding underneath furniture. I was royally pissed to discover some food rotting underneath the side of my dorm roommate's bed when I was a freshman at NCSU. It explained why all of the sudden we had ants everywhere and why I kept getting the shit bit out of me if I tried to walk across the carpet.

Is your apt near a dumpster? My friend lived above the garbage room and one time he had a bunch flies infesting his apt for a couple of days. We killed all the ones we saw and then laid down some fly paper and it did the trick. It was weird because one day there were about 50 flies, then the next, there were none.I've seen venus flytraps at the Home Depot...^^^That sucks about the dorm

Nope, I'm nowhere near a dumpster.

first off buy one of these: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200328447_200328447if youre concerned about them coming in through the vents, you can put up some mesh or something to prevent them from coming through. any chance theyre coming in thru open doors?

I don't think it is through the door... I only have one front door and it is too the hallway, which is inside. Meaning that if they were coming in from outside, they would have to get through three individual doors to get in to my apartment.

So I happened to be at Lowe's the other day and I decided to get a venus fly trap for the hell of it since it was only $5. The thing only has 5 individual traps (with two more growing),but it is a fucking beast. The first night I took it home I didn't even see any flies buzzing around but it somehow caught one. The next day I came home from work and it had caught flies in all four of it's other traps and there wasn't a fly in site. I figured that maybe some flies would come back since all traps were closed, but I haven't seen any since. I guess either it ate them before they could lay eggs or the other flies can hear the screams of their brothers being slowly digested, and are scared to come in. I love this thing.
