this isnt anything new.its not really a myth. its just what people are comfortable with.hell, i've taken my civic to about 10K miles without an oil change.i
6/17/2008 12:14:47 PM
you should taste the oil on the dipstick. if it tastes like olive oil, you're golden. give it a try.[Edited on June 17, 2008 at 12:54 PM. Reason : 5k is the new standard with generic oil, no matter what brand.]
6/17/2008 12:53:39 PM
i just add oil, never change.
6/17/2008 12:54:33 PM
^thats what i do.. with a filter change.
6/17/2008 2:46:40 PM
^^^well naturally
6/17/2008 2:47:58 PM
I ran about 23-24k miles on my last oil change.Amsoil 0w-20 oil and their best oil filter. True, I used about a quart and a half during that time period, but the funny thing is...oil consumption tapered off the longer I went.I usually run between 10k and 15k on a change using Mobil 1 5w-20 and a Mobil 1 filter.I never run less than 6k or 7k on dinosaur juice. Changing oil every 3k miles is a royal pain in the ass (and pain in the pocket if you have a shop/lube place do it).
6/17/2008 3:07:45 PM
id be scared of metal shavings gettin in the oil screen with that kind of mileage?
6/17/2008 3:13:23 PM
Run the best filter you can find. Honda metallurgy is excellent, and once the engine is broken in good, I don't worry about it. I rarely take engines to redline anymore.BTW, I have noticed no significant mileage gains; I just do it like this because in my older age, I fucking HATE changing oil.a bypass filter setup will also eliminate a lot of ultrafine particulates and extend the change interval significantly, provided you have an oil with a high detergency/dispersancy (or if you want, you can say a high TBN).

i ran my accord 22k with out touching it. i prob wont do that again but some of the heads on here dogged the shit out of it during that time. bitch ran like a champ. anyone still got the videos of that car?my truck gets mobil 1 full syn and mobil 1 filters and i go 7000.
6/17/2008 5:33:08 PM
i do change my oil filters every 3k. not the oil. it stays clean, but it does leak it out as well
6/17/2008 5:37:02 PM
i had a ranger that i would regularly go 8-15k on an oil change.. i delivered pizzas at the time..engine was never taken apart (dont know that the valve cover was ever off) and still ran when i sold it at 27x,xxx miles, but i suspect it had some compression issues at that point (sluggish)
6/17/2008 5:44:23 PM
^^^^ my truck isnt sitting in a junkyard either is it? looks like i have a lot better judgement, dumbass

pretty sure its not "baned"dumbass, you really need to get firefox with spell check, your posts would still be retarded, but spelled right

maybe if you keep posting the exact same shit that he ignored last time, your troll attempt will work better...
6/18/2008 3:41:28 PM
yeah he really ignored it. lol you niggas are worfless
6/18/2008 4:17:18 PM
i usually go about 10k with 100% synthetic amsoil and an amsoil filter
6/18/2008 4:22:43 PM
my honda manual said every 7500 miles so thats what i went by
6/18/2008 4:25:39 PM
okay, question from someone who doesn't know:my '02 saturn has about 115k miles on it and i need to add a quart of oil every 3k or so, if i leave off changing it (i tend to go about 5k between oil changes, so by habit i usually just put in a quart at 2.5k)is this okay? i haven't noticed anything wonky...can i go longer? i've heard that saturns (at least 2002 and older) tend to burn oil the older the engine gets...is this normal?could i go longer between changes? am i doing any damage to it? i usually use whatever oil's on sale (10w30, i think)
6/18/2008 4:36:34 PM
Ricky...especially if you do a lot of highway driving (and yes, beltline and most commute driving counts), then you can most definitely go longer than 3k. I'd consider 5k to be the least I would drive it, and 6k about the limit. If it's mostly in-town, then I would limit it to 5k tops...the car never really gets up to a good operating temp if you run it less than 20 or 30 minutes at a time, and the detergents and dispersants don't really get a chance to do their job. You also want to be able to cook off any condensation inside the engine (inevitably happens upon cooling and overnight, especially in humid weather). In the cars I've run dinosaur juice in, I've used the cheapest oil I can find (usually Advance Auto's house brand or Walmart's house brand) with good results. API (American Petroleum Institute) ratings have gotten more and more stringent (primarily due to emissions concerns), and all oils with the most current API rating will perform satisfactorily. As far as oil consumption goes, I don't really know the whole story on the Saturn 1.9, but I do know that the Olds Quad family has had issues in the past with excessive consumption and also excessive sludging due to condensation buildup in the oil...in part due to the wonky damn crankcase ventillation system. The Saturn engine has a lot in common with the Quad, but should use a conventional PCV valve...as a matter of fact, I'm sure it does. When one gets clogged up, then the engine may begin to use excessive amounts of oil...and seeing's how it's less than five dollars and located in the valve cover, it's a quick and easy first step to diagnosing a consumption problem. In my Accord, it gets good synthetic (nothing but Mobil 1 or Amsoil) and I run LOTS of miles before I touch it. Unless you run the Amsoil Ea filter (which has some hellaciously nice filter media) or better (like a supplemental sub-5 or 10-micron bypass filter), I'd change the filter between 5k and 7.5k and run between 10k and 15k on Mobil 1. Amsoil claims a 25k mile life on their best synthetic (about 8 to 9 bux a quart) and on their Ea line of filters, though they recommend a 15k change interval under severe service. I just ran mine about 23k, but I put a lot of highway miles on my car. Over 35k in a year. Now it's back to Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 filter because the cost difference is pretty significant, and I've seen very good results with Mobil 1. Dad's truck has over 395k miles on it, and we started using Mobil 1 @ around 45k. When Jeepman and I pulled the valve covers, the engine was SPOTLESS. Oil consumption was only what the damn valve cover gaskets were leaking, and they were brickbat hard. I'm sold on Mobil 1.
6/18/2008 10:49:50 PM
^ big red is at over 220k now, with 20-30k oil changes on mobil 1, and filters only when the pressure goes apeshit low around 15k or so, and is still running great hell, last change after 30k didnt look horribly bad, dark brown at the worst
6/18/2008 11:45:09 PM
The odometer is broke on both of my Bimmers. The OG Bimmer gets Mobil 1 synthetic oil every 5-6 months depending on how slack I am. I assume that to be around 8k-10k miles, so it should be straight. Not to mention that I usually have to add half a quart at the 2 month mark and another half quart at the 4 month mark.
6/19/2008 12:17:28 AM
I usually go 8,000 miles on Amsoil 5W-40 European formula and change filter every 4k.
6/19/2008 1:01:59 AM
is buying oil one of the times in life when the better stuff is more pricey?
6/19/2008 1:07:53 AM
for most part, yes, but frequency of changes is far more important than anything else. exceptions are extremes (e.g. racing) where you want to run synthetics that will handle high temperature extremes for extended periods.
6/19/2008 1:14:28 AM
to each his own
6/20/2008 11:57:02 AM
Filtration is the key and the bottleneck. If you run a good external oil filter, you can go 20-30k on good synthetic no problem.I used Amsoil and changed it at 10k w/ filter changes at 3,3k in the M3 when i had it. I daily drove it, autoxed, and probably did 2-4 track weekends an interval. I had it tested when i changed it at 10k and the results always came back as 'Good for continued use'.
6/20/2008 3:52:08 PM
Porsche has been recommending 15k+ in a lot of motors. I recall the 80s watercooled models were starting to push 10k+. I don't think any motor needs an oil change at 3k miles anymore.I remember looking at an authentic Pennzoil poster that read "Extended oil changes every 500 miles". Of course when that poster was printed, engines did not have oil filtration or magnetic drain plugs, even a sealed crank case. Time moves on... I don't think it helps in any way to change the oil below 5k miles, or much higher with synthetic. Ahmet

oil doesn't break down, only the additives do.the steam turbines at work use thousands of gallons of lube oil and we can go 20+ years on some oil and just add a few buckets of additives (as recommended by the manufacturer after chemical analysis) every few years.

I'm suggesting that oil does not need to be changed at 3k intervals on any modern engine, and that's my opinion. You're suggesting an oil change every week or so on a taxi cab...Ahmet
6/22/2008 3:55:41 PM
^okay so what happens if it takes me 9 months to drive 3k are you going to disregard the 3k or 3 months. it doesn't really matter if its a week or a year the way you are describing it. no?
6/22/2008 10:21:13 PM
3 months is fucking ridiculous9 months to a year i could see being reasonable but not much less than that
6/22/2008 10:26:20 PM
usually 3600 or 1800 rpm for the steam turbines (due to 60 Hz AC generation)
6/22/2008 10:38:27 PM
I change the oil every 3500-4k with the cheap shit on the Q45. 100% city driving. The Rx-7 gets new [Castrol GTX conventional] oil every 1500-2000 miles (but that is from some VERY hard running, 7000rpm and 15psi at least twice every time I drive it), new filter every other oil change. I use the OEM oil filter. Oil consumption is probably a quart every 1000 miles, which is about right for a pre 89 model rotary with mechanically controlled oil injectors/oil metering pump.
