http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-9964895-38.htmlpretty crappy, hopefully they will see some of their RR turbo customers go

wish i could figure out how to download from newsgroups
6/14/2008 4:54:52 PM
was their access actually usable? It seems like anyone who is aware of usenet already has a subscription to an unlimited provider such as UNS or giganews.
6/14/2008 4:55:22 PM
RR outsourced their usenet hosting about a year ago i thinki regularly got 500KB/s + and the retention rate was 60days +
6/14/2008 5:00:04 PM
looks like suddenlink dropped access sometime late last year
6/14/2008 5:02:57 PM
What are some good free programs for usenet? I know ForteAgent used to be free, and Outlook Express does news. I hate OE, and Thunderbird doesn't handle multipart messages well. Maybe a Thunderbird Extension? Of course, it's possible I've got the whole idea completely wrong.
6/14/2008 7:37:53 PM
I used to use forte back in the day.. twas my first pr0n downloads
6/14/2008 7:50:17 PM
6/14/2008 7:54:10 PM
So this is just RR's usegroup right? I can still use usenetserver?
6/15/2008 3:30:29 AM
just means no more free access from rrsubscribe to the good ones
6/15/2008 10:55:04 PM

6/16/2008 10:33:40 AM
6/16/2008 11:22:10 AM
2GB? Are you kidding me? That's like 1 quarter of a movie.
6/16/2008 11:30:24 AM
Shockingly, they probably don't care than it's only about a quarter of a movie you're illegally downloading from the newsgroups.
6/16/2008 2:07:26 PM
They should because they'll lose a bunch of thier turbo customers. I never said i was illegally downloading it.
6/16/2008 2:13:56 PM
since you can't legally download it, that would only leave one other option
6/16/2008 3:19:37 PM
6/16/2008 3:28:21 PM
Not sure of the credibility of this since I can't test it at the moment, however:Time Warner didn't kill newgroups now we get FREE Newshosting.com 2MB/s 4 Connections 100 Day Retention http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=853825
6/25/2008 7:41:16 AM
tested it last night, and it maxes out my brother's 6 mbit connection at home.
6/25/2008 8:07:06 AM
wow what? 100 day retention?
6/25/2008 8:28:47 AM
not according to them...
6/25/2008 9:54:46 AM
that's a lie, I downloaded a file that had a 89d header last night at 750KB/s.edit: someone else try it out, I had a friend last night who was actually hitting those caps.[Edited on June 25, 2008 at 10:06 AM. Reason : .]
6/25/2008 10:05:39 AM
4 connections will get you however fast you want on RR. I've gotten 1.2 MBytes/seconds from RR's news server before. If there's actually 100 day retention than i should just cancel usenetserver and use this. Although there's no ssh.
6/25/2008 10:19:29 AM
might want to wait and see--I don't think they've actually set up the free service yet. The Slickdeals post said the connections are working for everyone right now, so I think you're just getting the full account privileges.Once they limit it to RR addresses, that's when you might see the retention drop. Just guessing, though.
6/25/2008 10:21:53 AM
that slickdeals posting looks like it is for a specific road runner area or aquisition...the official road runner notice:http://help.rr.com/HMSFaqs/e_newsgroups_termination.aspxI cannot access Road Runner Newsgroups or download articles? As of June 23, 2008, Road Runner will no longer offer Newsgroups, however users can subscribe on their own to third party News providers.
