Alright, so I am in Europe working and a coworker and I booked a trip to Rome for next week by the seat of our pants. We have flights but don't have anywhere to stay. Can any of you that have traveled here help me decide where I should stay? Looking to go as cheap as possible, but will definitely pay extra to be close to the city center. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know. Also places I should eat, etc. would be great too. Thanks!

in rome, my gf and i stayed at village roma. it was about 20 minutes from the city center, but was awesome! it was great. there were tons of air conditioned trailers (trust me, u want AC), a large pool, live music every night, a grocery store across the street. it was a little metro/bus ride from the city center, but once u leave in the morning, u don't come back til u're ready to retire for the evening. it was well worth it and lots of fun. there were tons of travelers to share stories and drink with. i have to ask my gf what hostel we were in in venice. it was nice, we had a private room and bathroom, may as well have been a hotel room for under $85/night (for both of us). we were blocks from the vatican and anything that u'd want to do.

stay off of hotels on Via Venito (sp?) that is the most expensive street in Rome. Also if you get into trouble...remember that street name because the US embassy is there as well

I wouldn't stay ON venice...i'd actually try to not even EAT on Venice...everything there is severely overpriced. Great place to visit, but will empty your pockets quickly.

In Rome, make sure to have dinner in the plaze in front of the Pantheon, it's just a great view the whole time. if you're looking at the pantheon, the good restaurants are on your right. the shitty ones (including a mcdonalds) are facing it.
