So I go there every few weeks with work and I always wonder how those spiders are able to stay out in the room. I asked one of the guys who worked there once and he was a dick about it and didnt answer the question. For those who haven't been there - they have a bunch of nasty bugs in glass cases, then in the corner they have this big area with no glass where the spiders normally are, but they wander out and make large webs on the ceiling pretty often.

note to self: NEVER GO THERE

They also used to have a sloth that would escape its cage and hang out in the exhibits.

they're in a comfortable area and the constant influx of air from outside brings them a lot of food...plus they're harmless, so why keep them cooped up?i hate spiders, but i have no problem with that setupp.s. i fucking love that butterfly house, i could sit there for hours

Now that I think about it, isn't there a little blurb written on the wall about why they can be out of a cage?

I work at the Durham MLS, and the spiders in the corner you are speaking of just pretty much stay put in that area. They are fed in that area, so are usually attracted to staying around it. Next time you stop by, check out spaces up near the spot light areas, and you'll see that some of the spiders make webs outside of their specific 'space'. Last time I was in there (about a week ago) one had made a web right where one of the spotlights hits the ceiling. Made me think of the spider wanting extra attention, like 'TA DA! mine is better!'They pretty much move them if it gets out of control, but don't worry about it too much. note to everyone: COME check out the museum!!!!we do not have a sloth, the NC museum of natural sciences in downtown raleigh has a sloth in their butterfly atrium. Not sure who you spoke to, but if you were there on the weekend it was probably a volunteer. Possibly didn't know the answer to your question, but didn't want to admit that? If it was a reg. employee, I apologize about any rudeness. I'm still fairly new here, but if anyone has any questions, they can always PM me. I'll either answer it, or point you to someone who can.

Yeah when I last went they were out of their area near one of the lights. I just don't understand why they don't get adventurous and wander out a little further. The guy I asked said something about how they don't have toes, so they can't walk on the ground, so they don't leave.
