"A major character is seen walking nonchalantly toward the camera and away from a big, napalm-like explosion. Even the Coens use this in "No Country for Old Men." I believe the granddaddy of all such scenes to be the opening stinger in "Goldfinger" in which James Bond is the only person in a nightclub not reacting to a huge explosion nearby, an explosion for which he is responsible."

Highly trained military guys shooting wildly and missing, while the main character is able to pick off all of them with a pistol while running.

it kind of annoys me a little when someone walks away from an explosion without looking at it.

"look how badass this guy is."

see: Iron Man, No Country For Old Men, The Matador, etc.

although I <3 all of those movies.

edit: haha, i hadn't read this thread yet but Ebert is now my boy.

I just want to see one drug/gangster movie where the dealer or whoever lives happily ever after. It never happens.

Blow, Goodfellas, godfather, traffic, etc.

the only one I can think of is trainspotting. and that is a sorta.

^ I'm tired of camera tricks with mirror medicine cabinets in general. Contact and Layer Cake come to mind.

Or the scary movie thing where they build something up, but then it isn't scary. Then all of the sudden something scary jumps out 2 seconds later.

I'm not crazy about things jumping out at me every 6 seconds. Not every time, but it works better in moderation to me.

I'm tired of the cliche when the main character is some martial art/military/mobster badass and turns good never to kill again, someone is taken from them, forced to go back to "old ways" to get family member/lover back

When movie producers don't know a god damn THING about guns.
This movie was so crappy I forget the name of it. Someone's gun GETS WET and then WON'T FIRE. So they do a sequence where he is HOLDING IT UNDER A HAND DRYER while KUNG FU FIGHTING OFF BAD GUYS because apparently this MAGIC GUN WON'T FIRE WHEN IT'S DROPPED IN TWO INCHES OF WATER.
Makes me weep for fucking humanity.

I'll play devils advocate on this one. James Bond is expecting the explosion where everyone else isn't? Big surprise to everyone in the nightclub, not so much for James Bond.

The bad guy that just won't die. Some movies are so bad about this you just know the main villain isn't dead, that is until the death scene is more ironic, accompanied by some clever one-liner, or brought about by some sort of device they randomly showed at an earlier point of the movie.

Not so much a cliché, but annoying nonetheless... the hyper-extended jaw.

dude...Shoot 'em Up was a black comedy. Drying the gun under the hand dryer was making exactly the same point you are trying to make. It was ridiculous and that was the point.
