Currently we have TWC RR Lite and Standard Cable and are paying around $80/month. I'm looking to maybe bring that down to around $60. Our problem being that we are having a hard time justifying paying that much for Cable when we only watch TV every now/then. Both of us lead fairly active lives and if we do need to watch a game we'll usually go to a bar anyways.I've been looking at DirectTV and perhaps sticking with just RR Lite from TWC. Any other solutions? Should I ditch TWC all together and get DSL? How much would that run? Advice of any sort appreciated.

ditch cable TV? Lower that baby to $30 a month
6/5/2008 6:46:43 AM
You could just downgrade to the basic cable. Channels 2-25 and a few others. There is always RR Lite 768 as well.

i tried the whole "ditch TWC" last year. I got Clearwire internet and just used OTA TV since I don't really watch cable anyway. The TV was fine, but the Clearwire internet really started to suck after a while. So i resigned up with TWC for just RR, and it's basically the same cost as TWC anyway. I still use OTA HD for TV and an entertainment PC as a DVR, and i torrent The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and a couple other cable shows that I watch

We have Road Runner Turbo (10mbit), Digital hdtv bundle or whatever and one movie set thingy for about 80/month. Split between 4 people though. Not too bad.
6/5/2008 11:15:25 AM
gotta get that espn hd son
6/5/2008 1:30:16 PM
yeah espn and discovery HD are worth it.
6/5/2008 2:28:55 PM
i thought basic cable was channels 1-75(about 40 a month or so)...whats this thing the other person was talking about with only like 20-23 channels
6/5/2008 2:45:28 PM
^It used to be about $10/month a few years ago. I'm not sure what it is now.
6/5/2008 2:48:18 PM
damn...i'm gonna look into this...only way i'd get it is if it had cnn though[Edited on June 5, 2008 at 2:50 PM. Reason : if no cnn then it would have to have msnbc AND fox]
6/5/2008 2:50:34 PM
i was under the impression that basic cable and digital cable are the same price now. I guess getting ready for the change in 2009.
6/5/2008 2:55:05 PM
The change in 2009 is for OTA analog, not analog over cable.
6/5/2008 3:09:25 PM
nvm[Edited on June 5, 2008 at 3:12 PM. Reason : pretty lame channels...no cnn]
6/5/2008 3:11:08 PM
^^oh yeah. my bad. Still i thought basic and digital cost the same.
6/5/2008 3:14:27 PM
http://www.timewarnercable.com/easterncarolina/products/pricingpages/raleigh.htmlBasic is $12-15.
6/5/2008 10:47:26 PM
6/6/2008 1:09:30 PM
^yeah we're paying 80/month and we get Turbo RR and digital HDTV or whatever it's called.
6/6/2008 1:14:19 PM
basic cable is those that KRUZNBY mentioned, standard cable is 2-74.
6/6/2008 1:15:50 PM
ok nvm i have DIGIPiCSM 1000 plus Turbo RR for 82/month.
6/6/2008 1:16:49 PM
^ i'm sure that's an introductory rate, right?
6/6/2008 1:17:46 PM
nope, had it for more than a year. Road Runner doesn't have set prices, depending on who you get to install it they can give you different rates. Dude at the Preiss company gave me a number to call.
6/6/2008 1:22:04 PM
^ Watch your rate mysteriously double in like a month. We were paying like $40/month and after about 1.5 years it jumped way up.
6/7/2008 10:00:29 AM
Really my only complaint about RR is the crappy upload. I can download from newsgroups at a constant 1.2 Mbytes/sec whenever i want so i'm happy.
6/9/2008 11:53:45 AM
6/9/2008 12:09:34 PM
80$ split between four people would be 20$ a person. I think it's more like 86$ or something. So about 21.50$ a person/a month. Which is sweet for what we get. Sometimes having 3 roommates has its benefits.
6/9/2008 12:12:09 PM
digipic1000 is already $68/month, how did you add 10mbit internet for under $20?[Edited on June 9, 2008 at 12:21 PM. Reason : ]
6/9/2008 12:14:09 PM
^^ i want thatwe're paying more than that for digi cable w/HDDVR and RRlite 1.5mbpsfuckin lame
6/9/2008 3:03:12 PM
I don't know why we have HD-DVR. It's easier to just download the same shows from newsgroups at 1.2Megabytes/sec and the commercials have already been edited out for you.
6/9/2008 3:05:03 PM
i do basic cable for $8/mo and they send out the local channels in HD and you don't have to rely on an antenna (although i have one of those too).does plenty for me. i just download my shows on the interweb
6/9/2008 8:52:22 PM
^ what do you get aside from the local channels? now that i put my antenna in the attic, it doesn't cut out at all, but i'm thinking of getting basic when new shows start coming on again, so i can record two HD shows at one time (and possibly watch a third) using the HTPC
6/10/2008 7:07:46 AM
6/10/2008 8:04:02 AM
I"m about to do the same thing. i have digipic 1000 + dvr and regular road runner and am paying $135/month. I'm about to cancel it all and switch to road runner liteand direct tv w/ dvr and lower my bill to about $60/month.
6/10/2008 10:55:10 AM
Just my opinion but the people that bitch about Time Warner all the time are like "that guy" at work that is always bitching about leaving and never does.
6/10/2008 11:09:15 AM
One of the only ways to get them to change is for everyone to complain. If no one complained than nothing would happen.
6/10/2008 11:10:12 AM
i wanted to try directv but the guy said i only had 2 lines in my house and needed 3 for directv + dvrplus i was already using one for roadrunneri was like dude tons of people in my neighborhood have satellites and he said they were sd not hdi'm paying $83 for roadrunner and cable with dvr for now - it will def go up eventually
6/10/2008 12:24:15 PM
yeah we pay way too much for cable, around $130 a month for cable, dvr and RRI've been seriously thinking about switching over to directv and keeping the RR service through twc. I actually would do it right now if we werent planning on moving in < 6 months
6/10/2008 12:51:20 PM
Just moved into a new house, we get great OTA signal here so just sticking with that for HD for now, otherwise I just download the other shows and view them through the media center.Oh, and this new normal package of RoadRunner at 7Mbit is a good step in the right direction. Nice and fast.So only paying them $35/mo for the next 12 mos, at which point I'll call up and request another special deal for them to keep me around. They always oblige, it's nice to not get gouged by them.[Edited on June 10, 2008 at 1:16 PM. Reason : .]
6/10/2008 1:15:50 PM
whats the interface like on the directtv/dish DVRs? TWC's new interface is crap so I'm thinking about moving to satellite in my new housethe prices don't seem to be all that different, at directtv the HD package with DVR is $50/month...and it's the same thing at TWC. I thought the satellite was supposed to be all kinds of cheaper? are their less taxes or something?https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/wizard/buildYourSystem1.jsphttp://www.timewarnercable.com/easterncarolina/products/buyflow.htmlor is there some way to get better promotional pricing?]
6/10/2008 1:46:09 PM
as usual the number to time warner cable is busy......
6/11/2008 3:14:17 PM
They just sent my roommate (who does the cable bills) the same bill twice in the same month. He called, complained, and got a 10$ credit.
6/11/2008 3:30:13 PM
6/11/2008 3:33:51 PM
p.s. here's the basic cable lineup:
6/11/2008 5:43:33 PM
6/11/2008 5:47:20 PM
WAIT WHAT?!
6/11/2008 5:47:33 PM
yeahIt is called a "Price Lock Guarantee" ETF of up to $150. I do not know all of the specifics but they said I would get them in the mail. I hung up 5 minutes in to being on hold with the "3rd party verfier". I am not fucking with them anymore.
6/11/2008 5:50:08 PM
I thought service contracts would be a violation of their franchise agreement.
6/11/2008 6:07:35 PM
I'm going to have to go with evan on this one and say...
6/11/2008 9:40:09 PM
TWC is shitty. Service and product.
6/12/2008 10:07:38 PM
i actually think their product is pretty goodthere prices just suck
6/12/2008 10:13:46 PM
If cable ever gets where i am, I'm gonna have a tww directv dish shooting party.
