^^Isn't that basically self-enforced segregation? I mean, I know that 'gentrification' is a touchy subject and there are a lot of negative opinions on it, but I'm still a little lost as to how something that causes run-down homes to be restored and property values to go up is a Bad Thing.

case in point: 5 points in Raleigh. It went from old, working class traditional neighborhood to a gentrified upper-middle class hip area over the past 5-7 years. Now the original homes are all being torn down (1930's to 1960's bungalows and sub 1500sq homes) to build 4-6000 sq ft McMansions and multi-resident townhomes. In another 5-10 years the whole area will be ugly huge audacious houses that no one can afford.

Oh, you're talking about teardowns. I fucking HATE teardowns, and I'm in favor of any ordinance that will regulate that sort of thing (as I think is under consideration by the city council). I guess I was saying that, at least in my book, restoration of original houses brings about good results.

^^^ it isnt just tear downs, a lot of it is ridiculous additions too. Adding 3000sq ft to a 1200ft house just looks retarded.

You may not realize this, but we don't live in a bubble or in the middle of no-nothing nowhere'sville montana. The shit you do to and on your property affects the life and livelyhood of those around you, so hell yes they get a say in it.

And for this discussion, it's private business selling property, they can set whatever restrictions they want on the sale.

5 Points is going to complete shit with Oakwood following close behind. My neighborhood, 40s houses, is now being taken over by ridiculous looking McMansions that have minimal recesses from the streets. It is starting to terrible and I wish the city would do something to actually protect the historical neighborhoods of Raleigh better.
