Hypothetical. I overheard some guys talking about this in regard to insane gas prices and got me thinking.

I know it would run rough, but.... what if you took let's say a 1.8 4 banger OHV
pulled the pistons out of two cylinders so that the two remaining would be opposed on their power/compression stroke. Pulled the push rods from the dead cylinders, removed the spark plug wires and disabled the fuel injectors.

would it work?

Things I wonder about are:

The ECU saying "no way" and refusing to run.
problems with any balance shafts
damage to the ignition system

anyway jst wonder'in

the vibration would shake it apart no matter what pair you pulled

I don't see the point, especially if the vehicle is going to remain the same weight. You're just going to have to floor the gas pedal and probably consuming MORE fuel in the end. I could possibly seeing this work, but only if you've got money and time to spare... Just get a moped or a small motorcycle.

There was no point. Not trying to justify it, just wondering if it would work

how much more fuel efficient do you want to get?

4cyl. get close to 30-40mpg.

not worth it unless done right (injectors cut off when the load on the engine is low, exhaust valves stay open or all valves stay shut via low oil pressure to the lifters, the rest of the cylinders are firing balanced against each other only sould be possible with a 4cyl if it's a boxer, and ecu instantly adjust to the sudden change of information from the sensors)

which one of those is a 1.8?

i was just being a smartass . on a related note, my 98 Sonoma that has been converted to running on 3 cylinders by the previous owner by means of stripping the spark plug hole and further modified by me by disconnecting the injector is officially for sale. since then it has been converted back into a four-cylinder configuration by zxappeal's Kustom Werks by using a combination of helicoil insert, jb weld, and Jeepman's BFH

i think the point ^ was trying to make is that anything ohc/ohv isn't going to have pushrods.

in fact i would like to announce a contest on the best advertisement for it in a local language (and possibly with complimentary graphics) that would appeal to the intended audience. winnAr gets a 12 pack of cerveza of yer choice and a ride to the corner store in the back of my new truckita wearing an authentic sombrero.

my current decription is not Badgerific enough. new authentic decription should be captivating, motivating, include a phrase "mechanical condition is rough around the edges", and require only basic level of reading comprehension. I will test thoroughly by letting slowblack96 read it and recite in his own words.

1998 GMC Sonoma (same as Chevy s-10 ), regular cab, maroon w/ dark interior, split bucket seats, 6 ft bed, 4 cyl, 5 speed manual, 24-25 mpg, 125k miles, cold a/c, lowered 2 in, bedliner, k&n intake, flowmaster exhaust, pioneer cd/mps/wma stereo w/OLED, aftermarket hood and front bumper, clear euro lights front and rear, sought-after factory 16 inch ZQ8/camaro wheels, clear title, clear carmax. will make more pics in the next few days

listen... there is a reason some 4 bangers are geared to run 4000 rpm at highway speeds... cause they don't have the required power to maintain highway speed with any change in elevation or wind speed at lower rpms.... you'd be better off making a more aerodynamic car to save gas.

Ideally you'd like to have the hp of your car to equal the rate at which the wind + drivetrain loss opposes it at every speed... V8s can get away with cutting cylinders off because they usually exceed this balance by a great deal at almost any reasonable speed. The only time you need the extra power is to accelerate.

btw.. there is some b.s. in this post but the general idea is that you'll have to use the same amount of power to maintain a certain speed no matter what your motor is.

^ thats why a small displacement engine with a CVT would really save gas

it would run the engine at the required speed for any load

^^

I have a 1.5L engine that makes 70hp at like 5k rpms and I go 70 at 2000rpms.

Car weighs 2100lbs and it might be semi aerodynamic.

^What car do you have? Also sounds like it's an auto... Most auto's cruise at lower rpms... (well the ones that I've seen)
