Hypothetical. I overheard some guys talking about this in regard to insane gas prices and got me thinking.I know it would run rough, but.... what if you took let's say a 1.8 4 banger OHVpulled the pistons out of two cylinders so that the two remaining would be opposed on their power/compression stroke. Pulled the push rods from the dead cylinders, removed the spark plug wires and disabled the fuel injectors.would it work?Things I wonder about are:The ECU saying "no way" and refusing to run.problems with any balance shaftsdamage to the ignition systemanyway jst wonder'in

I don't see the point, especially if the vehicle is going to remain the same weight. You're just going to have to floor the gas pedal and probably consuming MORE fuel in the end. how much more fuel efficient do you want to get?4cyl. get close to 30-40mpg.

not worth it unless done right (injectors cut off when the load on the engine is low, exhaust valves stay open or all valves stay shut via low oil pressure to the lifters, the rest of the cylinders are firing balanced against each other only sould be possible with a 4cyl if it's a boxer, and ecu instantly adjust to the sudden change of information from the sensors)

which one of those is a 1.8? i was just being a smartass . on a related note, my 98 Sonoma that has been converted to running on 3 cylinders by the previous owner by means of stripping the spark plug hole and further modified by me by disconnecting the injector is officially for sale. since then it has been converted back into a four-cylinder configuration by zxappeal's Kustom Werks by using a combination of helicoil insert, jb weld, and Jeepman's BFH[Edited on May 23, 2008 at 9:15 AM. listen... there is a reason some 4 bangers are geared to run 4000 rpm at highway speeds... cause they don't have the required power to maintain highway speed with any change in elevation or wind speed at lower rpms.... you'd be better off making a more aerodynamic car to save gas.Ideally you'd like to have the hp of your car to equal the rate at which the wind + drivetrain loss opposes it at every speed... V8s can get away with cutting cylinders off because they usually exceed this balance by a great deal at almost any reasonable speed. The only time you need the extra power is to accelerate. btw.. there is some b.s. in this post but the general idea is that you'll have to use the same amount of power to maintain a certain speed no matter what your motor is.

^ thats why a small displacement engine with a CVT would really save gasit would run the engine at the required speed for any load

^^I have a 1.5L engine that makes 70hp at like 5k rpms and I go 70 at 2000rpms.Car weighs 2100lbs and it might be semi aerodynamic.

^What car do you have? Also sounds like it's an auto... Most auto's cruise at lower rpms... (well the ones that I've seen)
