Okay so i stripped two of the heads bolts on my old beater that blew a head gasket.

They are 10mm allen head bolts. No way to get grip pliers on it. Im guessing I will need to pound the next size allen in (11), then try that.

Any other ideas?? I live in Durham off 15/501 near Chapel Hill (not the hood, lol!).

probably if you drill it and insert... or you could just weld a nut to it or something...

Drill the heads off of the bolts, remove head, and then you should be able to remove the rest of the bolt using the shank. I would use a left hand drill bit when drilling the bolts and you may get lucky and have the whole bolt come out.

get a screwdriver (flat) and chisel it with a hammer til it turns.

make sure the screwdriver is lifetime warranty

try an extractor first.

if that won't work, weld a bolt or nut to it. careful not to get it too hot though, you'll warp the head. lay wet cloths around it to catch spatter and help keep the head cool. you might have to pull the cam (if it's ohc) and rocker assembly to gain better access.

That's probably a good suggestion. On all "non-weathered" bolts I've been able to drill the head off and then just unscrew it by sticking the tip of my finger on there and twisting it. If the bolt has corroded in the threads you can expect it to give you more trouble, but I doubt a head bolt would have that problem.

What grade bolts do they use for heads though? I had to drill some grade 8's out a while back and they were a bitch! Went through several nice DeWalt bits while dripping cutting oil on it and drilling at a low speed.

yeah, that's definitely a good idea too. i just personally hate the hassle of tracking down every little metal shaving that's stuck in the head afterwards. not a big deal if you're rebuilding the head too, but if he's just replacing the gasket it might be a pain.

if you are going to hammer the crap out of a flathead, why would you buy a good one? odds are you are going to bend or break a tip off with serious hammering, so might as well buy a cheap one. but if you are worried about cheaper ones shattering and getting parts stuck, maybe a good one might work. or see if you could find a very small chisel, since they are hardened they are unlikely to break bits off.

I think he meant to make sure it was lifetime warranty so that when you DO break it, you can get it replaced.
