My son has a cleft lip, the most common birth defect in the world. It is normally repaired before a child is 3 months old, but my son has complete DiGeorge Syndrome which leaves him immuno-compromised. He was born without a thymus gland, which is responsible for T-cell maturation. So he is virtually defenseless against illness. Once he has a thymus transplant to reconstitute his immune system, he will have surgery to correct the clefting.Cleft lip and palate are very common and easily corrected. It just isn't common for people to see children with them because they are generally corrected very early. Unfortunately, it tends to run in families. My husband had a cleft lip and I had a cleft palate, so we were unsurprised when our son was born with both.
