http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/05/06/sdsu.bust/index.html

Quote :
"About 100 people, including students majoring in homeland security and criminal justice, were arrested Tuesday in an undercover drug sting at San Diego State University, officials said.
art.sdsu.bust.dea.jpg

Officials say the evidence seized includes 50 pounds of marijuana, four pounds of cocaine and 350 ecstasy pills.

Among those arrested, 75 were students, one of them a criminal justice major charged with possession of guns and cocaine, authorities said. One student allegedly dealing cocaine was a month short of obtaining a master's degree in homeland security at the California school and worked under campus police as a student community service officer. "

Ok so we all know drugs are "bad" but is this not proof that the war on drugs has gotten out of control. All of these people were college students and except for the ones with unlawful weapons charges; are guilty only of possession and selling of those "evil" substances we hate so much.

Instead now of these people graduating, contributing as professionals in society, paying taxes, and repaying their student loans; we now have 75 convicted felons. 75 felons who will be a burden on the tax-payer as we pay for them to rot in jail. Upon release the chances are still high that they will never pull together their lives and instead fully commit to the on going cycle of crime we have in this country.

Perhaps i may bend and say fuck them for the ones who were also dealing in cocaine but a majority of these 75 I imagine were solely guilty of marijuana violations.

the war on drugs is more harmful than every other drug harm combined (drug abuse, addiction, etc.)

I mean

using the justice system to attempt to regulate morality and engineer society?

stupid

just another human failing to add to the list (slavery, genocide, eugenics, apartheid, patriarchy, etc.)

well those 2 kids who OD'd in the frat house hadn't died, the sting wouldnt have gotten all that funding. therefore, if you are holding multiple keys in your frat house, make sure not to leave the bodies around.

I'm not a fan of the war on drugs either. But making an argument based on the fact that they are college students is just wrong. 4 pounds of cocaine. 4 pounds. It shouldn't matter who these people are.

I did not really mean it like that. The point was instead of having a group of people who could have been productive members of society. We now have 75 convicts who will spend years in jail and MAYBE might come out to continue on with a life.

are they going to send all 75 to jail?

WTF, 75 people can't effectively organize something like this. I'd say find the leaders as best as possible and try to minimize the effect on the majority of the organization. Know what I'm saying, there's got to be a ring leader or some kind of inner circle.

I mean, daymn

But there are still things messed up about the law enforcement side of this I think. Imagine if cases like these were left to California and didn't have to have this federal intervention. Pot is really almost legal if California. 50 pounds might be another story, but I do hope that the kids just running pot in this deal don't get assraped for the next 20 years.

if most dealers started doing that

how could the government stop it?

(brute force -- denial of service "attack" -- civil disobedience)

there are 100 to a 1000 times more drug dealers than jail cells

I'm not even sure there'd be enough handcuffs to go around

You say the cops ruined their lives.
Others say the kids ruined their own lives.

I agree that "the war on drugs" is a shame, but I've also never had two kilos of cocaine or 50 pounds of marijuana in my dorm room.

Something tells me these kids were probably some of the biggest bastards on that campus and the $100k worth of coke and marijuana is not the only crime they have committed in recent years.

^^ That "something" is anecdotal evidence. No other comments are necessary, but if you think these kids are the poster boys of the agenda then, by all means, please put them on the front lines of the war against the war on drugs.

Like I said, the war on drugs is a shame. I believe the black market that has been created by the war on drugs is far worse than the drug use that would occur if it were legalized and therefore I support legalization. That doesn't mean I think drug dealers are "freedom fighters" or that they should somehow else be celebrated. If anything, I think drugs should be legalized so that some drug dealers can be eradicated. Maybe I have too much faith in humanity.

anecdotal as in what? what evidence?

I agree that the war on drugs is a shame, and that the black market situation is worse than the legal one

I also don't think that these guys are the "poster boys" of anything (no one's saying that)

but that doesn't mean that this drug/gun thing was somehow "not the only crime they have committed in recent years"

do you have trouble believing that drugs and guns were the only crime they've committed?

if so, why?

(I'm suggesting that you're exhibiting some level of drug bigotry)

when someone robs a store, that's no reason to assume they cheat on their spouse

when someone sets a house on fire, that's no reason to assume they've got a dui

when someone sell lots of drugs and has guns for protection, what reason do you have to assume there are other crimes?

(if you're just being prejudiced, admit it, and save me some time, cause I'm not gonna let this go)

^ yeah no shit.

Ignorant American: "If they sell drugs they must be hardened criminals that go around shooting people and participating in other gang related activities"

I imagine a lot of these kids are just spoiled rich boys sitting in front of the frat house with their croakies on, drinking busch light, that use part of daddy's trust fund money to purchase some drugs to supplement their stipend.

Through a friend i knew this rich frat-tastic kid that was in one of those fraternities that lost their charter couple years back. Had a laid back friendly outgoing personality and the dude was actually smaller then me. Found out two years later that he used to deal certain "hard-drugs" mentioned above. I laughed at first but then realized it made sense. He had plenty of capital; and other rich friends that wanted drugs.

From what i have heard also all coke dealers HAVE guns. There is a lot more risk when dealing this then pot; and often the customers you cater to are a lot more sketchier. Not to mention your product is worth a lot more. If you don't have one you are going to get jacked.

also, is there any actual evidence to support your hunch? (anecdotal evidence is not actual evidence)

just admit that you're prejudiced about this, or give some real evidence that these guys did other stuff

you can post funny pictures and try to avoid answering me,

I read elsewhere that the entire reason that the kids were even investigated in the first place was due to 2 student deaths caused by overdoses in the span of 6 months or so. I think it's arguable that perhaps if this frat wasn't pushing drugs and having "sales" maybe they wouldn't have ODed.

sure anything's arguable -- that doesn't mean it's right or even close to being right

but beyond arguable? no.

when someone ods on prescriptions, do we arrest the pharmacist, doctor, or pharmaceutical company?

wait, we don't? but they advertised, made available, and sold the poison to the person

iow, how is an individual's irresponsible act (taking too much) only their fault if they bought their poison legally?

(that argument you're suggesting has never made sense, ever. no one put a gun to anyone's head and made them od)

(and in the event that the od was caused by impurities, that's just another reason to legalize the drugs for safety regulation)

yeah, caught for exchanging cash for drugs -- a civil liberty that should have never been prohibited in the first place

a civil liberty no different than the one that allows oxycontin to be marketed and sold for profit -- despite instances of oding

they made the choice to be dealers, but those that oded or were addicted themselves chose to not get help or be safe

LOL

That is the most retarted thing i have ever heard. I believe you have been listening to closely to the DEA propraganda. The ironic thing is b.c of its high mark up; some of the biggest users of coke are some of the wealthiest most successful members of our society since they can afford to pay for it.

The poor and the stereotypical "addict" who we all here about selling his car for drugs likely does crack, or some other drug.
